Have you ever felt the desire to move and experience another beautiful part of the country? This could be the perfect career change for you.
The National Trust in England is looking for someone to work as a ranger on the Fame Islmds, one of Britain’s oldest nature reserves located just off the Northumberland coast.
For $22,668 a year, the successful applicant will be required to look after the local wildlife, including the 200 seal pups which are born on the islands each year and 37,000 pairs of puffins.
The ranger will get the chance to work in some of the nation’s most attractive places and spaces — impressive sunrises a one-minute ride and one of England’s largest seal colonies on his doorstep. But like every job, it doesn’t come without a downside. Apart from avoiding the dive-bombing Arctic terns, there is no running water on the island and there will be severe storms to fight with during the spring.
Along with a love of nature and the outdoors, the National Trust is looking for “an excellent team player” who has experience in conservation work. This job isn’t the normal 9 to 5, so being good at PowerPoint isn’t a must. With 50,000 annual visitors every year, you really need to be able to get on with people and show them how they can participate to help nature.
Could you see yourself in this role? Applications for the job close on June 7.Want to apply? Click here.

Three and a half kilometers of pure mangroves(红树林), makes this the longest pure mangrove kayaking expedition in Singapore. The distance spent inside the mangrove gives you the maximum opportunity to witness wildlife within the mangrove ecosystem. Come experience the challenge of operating your kayak through the labyrinth(迷宫)of waterways and be amazed at the calm and quiet beauty of the wetlands. This last corner of natural wilderness in Singapore is so inaccessible, that very, very few have ever experienced it-which makes this a truly special program.
Most Recent Traveler Reviews
Traveler A: Traveled from bottom to top of Singapore in rush hour traffic in order to get to Ubin for a 9:30 start—only to find no guide there. Although, once he arrived, the guide was lovely—offering a very knowledgeable tour and lots of enthusiasm around a beautiful part of the world—our 6-hour kayaking trip was actually over before 2:30 pm, despite only hitting the water at 12 noon.
Traveler B: The guides were nice, however the biggest disappointment was the timing. We thought we were going for a 4-hour kayak but were back in 2 hours and that included the prekayak safety talk. The mangroves are lovely but we were told that a storm was near. We felt that there had never been any intention of going out for longer.

Well, now’s the time to let the most important women of the movement take the limelight in an exhibition that includes works by American artists such as Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler, but spreads the net wider to include the female abstract artists from Europe, Asia and the wider world, with whom most of us will be unfamiliar.

Powerful Portraits: Alice Neel
The largest UK exhibition to date of American painter Alice Neels work will bring together her figurative pieces from across her 60-year career. Neel went against the popular grain by painting figures when abstract works were most popular, and she painted subjects that other artists ignored — pregnant women, labour leaders, black children, civil rights activists and strange performers. 【推荐1】Personality is the pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviors unique to a person. People tend to think of personality as fixed. But according to psychologists, that’s not how it works. “Personality is a developmental phenomenon,” said Brent Roberts, a psychologist at the University of Illinois.
That’s not to say that you’re a different person each day you wake up. “In the short term, change can be barely detectable,” Roberts said Individuals’ levels of each personality trait tended to stay consistent within each decade of life. But those decades add up. “Throughout all those years, our personality is still changing, but slowly,”Roberts said. “It’s something that’s subtle,” he added. “You don’t notice it on that five-to-10-year time scale, but in the long term, it becomes pronounced.”
In 1960, psychologists surveyed over 440,000 high school students, 1952 of whom were tracked down and given the same survey fifty years later. The results, published in 2018 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that in their 60s, participants scored much higher than they had as teenagers on questions measuring calmness, self-confidence, leadership and social sensitivity. There’s good evidence that the average self-control of a30-year-old is higher than a 20-year-old. At the same time, people who are relatively self-controlled at 18 also tend to be relatively self-controlled at age 30.
So why do we change so much? Evidence suggests it’s not dramatic life events, such as marriage, the birth of a child or loss of a loved one. Some psychologists actually suggest these events strengthen your personality as you bring your characteristics with you to that particular situation.
`“Instead, changing expectations placed on us—as we adjust to university, starting a family—slowly wears us in, almost like a pair of shoes,” Roberts said. “Over time you are asked in many contexts across life to do things a bit differently,” he added. “There’s not a user handbook for how to act, but we unconsciously follow the way we are supposed to behave in these situations. So we adapt.”
1. What do we know about personality from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?A.Individual personality has a lot in common. |

The prolonged dry season in tropical areas usually causes a lot of losses. It will be very harmful to local farmers, because most of the tropical areas are regions of the developing countries. Sometimes agricultural and plantation crops will be damaged because of so much dry land and the fact that the river used to flow the water for rice fields are also dry. Rain is very important for plants because rain contains many nutrients that plants are in great need of.
What’s more, if the prolonged rainy season arrives and then floods usually occur in certain areas of low lands. Even for the capital city of Jakarta floods have struck several times during the prolonged rainy season. In addition to floods, the rainy season can cause many diseases. During the dry season, diseases are usually caused by mosquitoes such as dengue fever. While in the rainy season, people who have the weak immune will be more easily attacked by some diseases such as flu, fever, diarrhea, and much more.

Veolia does this with a concept called “district cooling,” which sends water chilled by ice at a central plant out to several nearby buildings. A nearly 10-mile circuit of cooling pipes connects the downtown buildings, including the convention center, government buildings and hotels, to a brick building with two domes(穹顶)about 30-feet high next to it.
Inside the domes are tanks filled with water. A lot of tubes run through the water tank carrying chilled glycol, a fluid(液体)that freezes at a very low temperature. This process runs at night, and ice forms around the tubes.
“During the day, when we are using the ice to produce cooling for customers, we run water over the outside of the ice and malt it and actually provide cool water out to the distribution system,” says John Gibson, a vice president at Veolia Energy.
Why ice? The ice essentially stores the cheaper energy that’s available at night.
“ It allows you to make ice at night, when electrical demand is lower and costs are lower, and then melt that ice during the day to supplement your mechanical refrigeration,” Gibson says. The customers don’t need to buy their own refrigeration units, so they save about 10 percent on cooling costs by using Veolia’s district setup.
Using nighttime electricity also takes the heat off the electricity network. By using ice, Veolia doesn’t need to use as much electricity during the days.
Gibson also says it’s not cheap to build all of the pipes and pumps for a district cooling system, but it saves money in the long run, especially if existing underground infrastructure (基础设施)can be used.

There was the famous London Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and palaces and markets and long streets full of shops.
Then, too, there were the daily crowds where could be seen people from all over the world. Knights, scholars and the highwayman (拦路强盗)or thieves, who had been infamous for their clever robberies, passed by each other.
Here, also, were noblemen dressed in gold, from Italy and Spain and France; slaves from Spanish America, sea captains and ministers, soldiers and servants—all held by chances or interests within the gray walls which circled London, and whose gates gave welcome to as strange a crowd as could be found in the world.
Into this curious crowd came Shakespeare, quick to see and eager to learn. And before long all these strange sights were as familiar to him as the faces of his own town’s residents. Each one told its story to him so plainly that, as before he had learned the secrets of the fields and woods, so now he learned men and men’s interests that make up the great world.
And he learned these lessons so well that when he came to write his plays, he made such use of them as no writer ever made before or since; for it is the use of this knowledge of the world, combined with his own genius, that makes Shakespeare the greatest dramatist that has ever lived.
1. What was London like in Shakespeare’s eyes when he first went there?A.Dirty and small. | B.Strange and interesting. |
C.Infamous and terrible. | D.Familiar and modern. |
A.Shakespeare got inspiration to write from his hometown, London. |
