Christmas is coming early this year for “Downton Abbey”《唐顿庄园》fans. Highclere Castle, where the beloved British show was filmed, will be available for one night only on Airbnb.
The stay will offer two lucky guests a glimpse at what life as a Crawley may have been like. The once-in-a-lifetime stay will take place on November 26, 2019, according to the listing.
Highclere Castle belongs to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, who still live on the grounds and will host the guests. The Earl is Queen Elizabeth II’s godson.
Reservations for Highclere Castle will become available on October 1 at 7 p.m. ET, and it’s first come, first serve.
The stay at Highclere Castle will cost $159.
In a one-night-only listing, Earl and Lady Carnarvon are inviting one lucky couple to “live like royalty” at their 100,000-square-foot, 300-room estate in Hampshire, England. The chosen pair will be invited to share dinner with the Earl and Countess in the state dining room, followed by coffee in the library. They will then retire to one of the gallery bedrooms with views overlooking 1,000 acres of parkland. Before they leave the following day, the guests can also expect breakfast and a private tour of the grounds that will highlight rooms “Downton Abbey” fans know well, including the drawing room and gallery bedrooms.
Guests will be waited on by the castle’s butler service(管家服务) during dinner and there’s strictly one butler allowed per guest, according to house rules.
Other stipulations for guests include that all newspapers must be ironed, they must wear cocktail attire to dinner, they can only gossip in the downstairs quarters, and there are no pets allowed. But have no fear, there are nine dogs on site who can’t wait to make your acquaintance.
This isn’t the first time the Earl and Countess have opened their doors to the public.
Visitors can take tours of the castle between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily from July to September. The castle is also open on various days throughout the year. The couple even hosted the first public Christmas ball at Highclere Castle last year. They’ll be hosting another holiday ball this year, though the specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
“It’s an absolute privilege and pleasure to call Highclere Castle my home and I am delighted to be able to share it on Airbnb for a truly unique stay,” Lady Carnarvon wrote on Airbnb.
“Highclere Castle has been in the Carnarvon family since 1679 and has an incredibly rich history,” the Countess added. “I am passionate about the stories and heritage of Highclere Castle, and I am looking forward to welcoming our future guests.”
The event builds on the excitement for the “Downton Abbey” film.
The film follows the Crawley family as they prepare for a visit from King George V and Queen Mary in 1927. It premieres in theaters on Friday in the US.

Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when rain turns fields muddy. “Tarzan”, however, could deal with some of those challenges.
Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. “Many robots tend to get twisted(弯曲的) together or get stuck,”he says. What's more, he notes, "It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them.”
What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says, “The sloths(树懒)move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid having to walk around the forest floor. "Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.
Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or copy mammals. But he says he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.
Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors (传感器) and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs nutritional support. And adding a third “hand”could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.
1. What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?A.They took up too much space. |
B.They made the farming process slow. |
C.They had difficulty exploring in fields. |
D.They caused certain damage to crops. |

It might just prove to be one of man’s greatest inventions. And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks and dangers. When people mention that AI could be dangerous, most people think of scenarios from movies or books where an AI program decides to eliminate or conquer all humans.
In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the potential misuse of AI. Their main concern was that criminals could use AI for a variety of evil purposes. Someone can use AI to create websites that could be used to steal people’s personal information. Another potential risk is faster hacking—AI programs could be taught to find loopholes in software and break into secure computer systems. Some of the risks were as dramatic as the ones we see in books and movies. For example, the experts mentioned automated terrorism (自动化的恐怖主义) by using drones or unmanned vehicles as weapons. Remote attacks using such devices could be made easier through the use of AI.
And finally, there were some concerns on the fact that AI can mimic voices as well. Last year US filmmaker Jordan Peele teamed up with BuzzFeed website to make a movie using AI techniques to copy former US president Barack Obama’s voice. They “had” him voice his opinions on the 2017 movie Black Panther and current US President Donald Trump. While in China, tech giant Baidu, has also developed a program called Deep Voice that can “copy” anyone’s voice by analyzing a 3.7-second audio sample.
Famous British physicist Stephen Hawking even thought AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization. “Once humans develop artificial intelligence, it will take off and redesign itself at an alarming rate. Humans couldn’t compete and would be superseded, he told the BBC. However, Hawking suggested “I believe we can create AI for the good of the world. We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management, and prepare for its consequences well in advance.”
Actually, AI technology is making great progress in terms of the three-stage development of artificial intelligence. It is unlikely that fully developing AI would make it hard for mankind to survive. After all, without human intelligence, AI cannot even develop itself, let alone replace human civilization.
1. According to the text, which of the following is NOT the risk brought by AI?A.AI can be used to create websites to steal people’s personal information. |

You can make a water filler(过滤器)from a cone of birch bark(桦树皮). This cone is then filled with layers of sand, charcoal(木炭), grasses, and other materials. Grasses and sand help to trap suspended particles(悬浮颗粒). Charcoal helps to remove chemical impurities, but not bacteria. You may have to pass the water through the filter more than once, depending on the site of the filter and what it's made of. Generally speaking, the bigger the filler, and the more layers you have in it, the better.
The birch bark cone will need to have a fairy small hole in the bottom. The cone will have to be tied with cordage to keep it from opening up. Put a few stones in the very bottom, to help hold your filtering materials in place. Then pour in lavers of charcoal, grasses, sand, and possibly other materials that you feel will help to filter out suspended particles and perhaps even bacteria.
Once you have constructed the filter, simply pour impure water through the filer, catching it in another container at the bottom.
This is basically the "well" method of obtaining water. Dig a hole about 2 4 feet from a water source, such as a river. Allow the hole to fill with water. The water in the hole will likely be reasonably pure.
1. How do we get purer water?A.Bigger filter and less layers. | B.Smaller filler and more layers. |
C.Larger filter and more layers. | D.Smaller filter and less lavers. |
A.Killing bacteria. | B.Removing chemicals. |

From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in our life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay. Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the US top out at an average of 19.42Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.
“5G is one of those heralds (使者),along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age.” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, and also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need the high speed.
And virtual reality glasses and headsets haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or even replace — smartphones.
Ericsson stated at February's Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.
But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.

Is Internet shopping such a pleasure as going to the shop? Google announced that it has added two new voice commands for people to better control their privacy when using its voice assistant. For example, users can tell Google Assistant to forget what it just heard if it was activated accidentally by using the new command: “Hey Google, that wasn’t for you. ” Users can also ask “Hey Google, are you saving my audio data?” to learn more about their privacy options and change their settings. The company also gives users the option to delete data using their voice by saying: “Hey Google, delete everything I said to you this week.”
Facebook announced a new version of its “Privacy Checkup” tool with the goal of walking users through their key privacy settings. Facebook says the updated tool will help users control who can see what they share, how their information is used and how they can boost their account security. Previously, the tool was focused on showing users who could see their posts, their profile information and connected apps.
Ring, the home security and video doorbell company owned by Amazon, announced an update to its app that allows users to choose out of requests from local police for video. It comes in the wake of criticism of its partnerships with law enforcement.
Victoria Petrock, principal analyst at research firm eMarketer, said that privacy would likely be a“hot topic”at this year’s CES as consumers only become“more aware and concerned”about the problem.“Tech companies are trying to‘prove they are taking privacy seriously’,” Petrock said. Call it a defensive move. “If they don’t, they risk more heavy-handed regulation at some point, so they would rather be part of the way than part of the problem,” she said.
