While most consumers wish to reduce plastic waste, it’s not an easy goal to achieve. That’s because the cheap and long-lived material is found in almost every daily necessity. Now, an Indonesian-based company has come up with a delicious solution.
David Christian, the co-founder of Evoware, says after investigating various materials, the company settled on seaweed. Unlike corn, commonly used for containers, seaweed does not require water, fertilizers, or large amounts of space. According to Evoware, as much as 40 tons of seaweed can be grown in an area the size of a baseball field. Since Indonesian farmers harvest more seaweed than they can sell, it’s easy to find the material.
The seaweed packaging is safe to consume and can entirely dissolve(溶解)in hot water. While the eatable wrappers(包装纸)may not have any taste, Dubbed Ello Jello, the single-use cups invented by Evoware, are available in four tastes—orange, lychee, peppermint, and green tea. The best part? You can order the powder and make them at home! Though currently(目前) they cannot stand hot liquids, Evoware is working on making heat-resistant(耐热的)cups as well.
While the seaweed products seem like a perfect replacement, it’s a hard-sell in Indonesia. According to Christian, “The awareness and sense of urgency to minimize the use of single-use plastic is still very low. This makes our bioplastic seem unnecessary.” Also a factor is the cost, which is higher than using plastic. However, Evoware believes they can reduce the price once the company moves to mass production. Hopefully, Evoware will succeed in convincing people worldwide that switching to their products will go a long way in protecting our beautiful planet.

Under the new law, more than 30 types of fruits and vegetables must now be sold in materials that can be recycled. Potatoes, tomatoes, apples and carrots are some of the items included in the list. Plastic will still be allowed for packs that are over 1.5 kilograms. Smaller items such as raspberries and cherry tomatoes can still be sold in plastic for now, but the country plans to ban (禁止) all single-use plastic packaging for whole fruits and vegetables by 2026.
This ban on plastic packaging is part of a broader effort by France to control plastic waste across a range of sectors. Other efforts include preventing restaurants from including plastic toys in children’s meals, newspapers and magazines from being delivered in plastic, and tea bags being sold in plastic packages. Furthermore, public locations must provide water refill stations to disincentivize the use of single-use water bottles.
It’s believed that 37% of fresh fruits and vegetables are wrapped in plastic in France. The government says the new ban will stop one billion pieces of plastic from being used each year.
Not everyone is happy with the change. François Roch, president of the French fruit sellers’ federation, told Reuters, “Selling loose produce is complicated (复杂的) as many customers touch the fruit and people do not want their fruit to be touched by other customers.”
The ban will likely require a change in habits Shoppers will probably have to take their own reusable bags to fill and weigh. The advantages of wave power are clear. Basically, wave energy does not emit greenhouse gases when generated, like fossil fuels do. Turbines(涡轮机) generate electricity through the power of waves, making them a completely pollution-free, renewable energy source. And the amount of power that is produced in a wave is huge-that energy then gets captured by wave energy converters(转换器) to produce electricity. There is also a lot of potential because many countries have access to an ocean that can help power their electric grids. Also, waves are hardly interrupted and almost always in motion. This makes electricity generation from wave energy a more reliable energy source compared to wind power, since wind is not constantly blowing.
But the disadvantages of wave energy are serious too. Building plants or electrical wires directly on the beach might prove challenging because they would be unsightly and can cause damage to marine life and the surrounding ecosystems. Local fishing zones could be affected or the plants could lead to more coastal corrosion(腐蚀). High costs is a problem too. Wave power is an emerging energy technology in the early stages of development, making working out costs difficult. Maintenance for these plants is projected to be very expensive because they will be submerged in constantly-moving saltwater. Because constant movement can lead to more breaking, wave energy plants will most likely need regular(and costly)maintenance.
Despite the challenges, there is a future of wave energy. For many ocean-bordering countries, wave energy could be a great addition to the renewable energy mix. The bottom line is that wave power has huge global potential. However, the industry needs more funding and research to finalize the technology involved so that countries and governments can begin adding wave energy to their renewable energy collection.

An emotionally aware” computer being developed by British and American scientists will be able to read an individuals thoughts by analyzing a combination of facial movements that represent underlying feelings.
“The system we have developed allows a wide range of mental states to be identified just by pointing a video camera at someone, “ said Professor Peter Robinson of the University of Cambridge.
He believes the mind-reading computer’s applications could range from improving people’s driving skills to helping companies tailor advertising to people’s moods(心情).
“Imagine a computer that could pick the right emotional moment to try to sell you something, a future where mobile phones, cars and Web sites could read our mind and react to our moods,” he added.
The researchers, who are developing the technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, also hope to get it to accept other inputs such as posture(姿势)and gesture.
“Our research could enable Web sites to tailor advertising or products to your mood,” said Robinson. “For example, a Webcam(网络摄相机) linked with our software could process your image, encode the correct emotional state and send information to a Web site.” It could also be useful in online teaching to show whether someone understands what is being explained and in improving road safety by determining if a driver is confused, bored or tired.

What made them different is that all of the kids are refugees(难民). They were playing as part of a camp that gives them a chance to develop their soccer skills and to meet other kids who had to start their lives over in the United States. The camp is run by an organization called LACES, which stands for Life and Change Experienced through Sports. The group uses soccer to help bring together communities that have experienced hardships.
SerenFryatt, 38, got the idea for LACES while playing on a women's soccer team in Liberia,an African country that had been at war with itself for 14 years. Fryatt, who's from Muncie, Indiana, saw that soccer brought joy to the Liberian women on her team, even though their lives off the field were very difficult. After starting a soccer program for kids in Liberia, she decided to start a similar camp in Maryland, where she moved in 2015. Coaches volunteer their time, and the costs are paid mostly by donations(捐赠). This year, 95 kids signed up.
The camp, for ages 9 to 14, is split(分组) between training that helps kids develop skills, such as passing and ball control, and meeting where they discuss life skills. One of the coaches, Louisa Pitney, said she likes seeing how the kids grow just from being together.
At the end of the camp's last day, all the kids gathered in the middle of the field. Fryatt asked them to raise their hands and say what they had learned that week. Some kids talked about soccer skills-one girl said she'd learned not to use her hands; a boy said he'd learned how to score a goal.
When a coach called on one shy girl, she smiled before answering in a soft voice.
“Celebrate each other, "she said.

The US 2020 presidential election has captured people’s hearts around the world. In order to allow voters to vote in person, poll (投票站) workers need to work at different vote centers. In past elections, most poll workers were elderly, but now that they are more at risk of severe symptoms from COVID-19, there was a growing need for young people to serve as poll workers.
I first became aware of the opportunity to become a poll worker from a story on my Instagram feed from an account called “Poll Hero”. It mentioned a large-scale recruitment (招聘) effort for young poll workers, and I immediately became interested in participating. I signed up to be a poll worker from the website, and a few days later, I registered through the High School Student Election Worker Program with the assistance of a Poll Hero volunteer.
After registering, there were two steps I had to take in order to become certified to serve in this election. The first was an online training course. The course takes around three hours but can be completed in multiple sittings. It covers the different roles workers have, different procedures workers must follow and provides information on how to use tools such as the electronic pollbook. The session is interactive, and I often engaged in simulated (模拟的) situations and knowledge checks to ensure that I understood each lesson. After taking the online course, I had to pass an exam with an 80 percent score or higher to complete that part of my certification. On my first attempt, I passed with a score of exactly 80 percent.
After passing the online course, I attended a two-hour in-person training session where I worked with a real electronic pollbook to practice what I would do on Election Day. The instructor took us through many different scenarios where we practiced assisting different types of voters. I was pleased to see many fellow young people attend the session!
In total, I spent 37 hours helping voters vote during this election. With my mask on the entire time, I checked in voters and helped them use the ballot (投票) marking devices where they could cast their vote. I also loved meeting fellow workers who are passionate about being engaged and helping our community. Taking part in this historic election is something I will never forget.

The village will include about 120 homes of different sizes. The design begins with building structures of steel(钢铁),which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete(混凝土)—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17 ℃ cooler than the temperature outside, which is the biggest advantage to people living inside.
The village is the work of Robert Bezeau with the purpose of setting up some environmental projects. Having started a recycling program in 2012,during which a number of plastic bottles were collected,he started to think how they could be put to use. Soon enough,he decided to use them to build houses.
Over 10,000 plastic bottles were used to build the first house, which was completed late last year. The bottles were gained from the same recycling project that Robert had set up. The next home is expected to be bigger, and will need more bottles. The special homes will be sold on request for anywhere between $149,000 and $300,000. The village will also feature its living environment, such as gardens,mini-parks,and more.
22,000 plastic bottles are thrown away around the world per second. While all these bottles clearly cannot be reused into homes, the project hopes to raise the attention of the waste. The village will also create an education center that will teach people from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as building materials.

According to a new survey(调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.
“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.
