The Four Best Places to Go in Europe for Spring Break
Cheaper flights, lower room rates, fewer tourists, and tons of seasonal activities make this the suitable time to take a real-life Euro-trip.
Budapest, Hungary
For a spa-centric (水疗中心) holiday, consider Budapest. This incredible beauty destination boasts 118 thermal springs — more than any other capital — and a variety of choices of places to “take the waters”, from traditional Turkish baths and Neo-Baroque pools to Art Nouveau spas and modern facilities. Bonus: Hungarians claim these mineral-rich waters are of beneficial cure for skin.
Florence, Italy
The “Cradle of the Renaissance(文艺复兴的摇篮)”, is steeped in classical art and architecture. The Uffizi Gallery displays such masterpieces as “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli. Florence is the center of Tuscan cuisine. Its narrow streets and piazzas are decked with alfresco cafés, trattorias, and gelato shops.
Santorini, Greece
Most people think of Santorini as a summer hot spot, but spring bookings are up 94 percent, according to American Express Travel. While it might not be beach weather, there are plenty of benefits to visiting this peaceful and beautiful island during off-peak season. And fewer crowds mean you won’t have to compete with tons of tourists for a front-row seat to the breathtaking sunsets.
Stockholm, Sweden
After the long and harsh winter, spring refreshes Sweden’s capital.(Keep in mind it can still be quite chilly through early May, so pack layers.)Visitors pack into the stylish shops, and art galleries. Plus, warmer weather is ideal for exploring the various events and festivals that take place this time of year. And, of course, no trip would be complete without checking out the Nacka Fountain, among the most awe- inspiring water sculptures in the world.

Spain: Baby-Jumping
The Spanish village of Castrillo has some interesting ideas about childcare. Since the 17th century, the village has been holding a yearly ceremony in which babies are laid out on mat in the street. Actors dressed as devils then skip over them. It supposedly removes the children’s original sin. Nobody would blame you if you held your breath until the jumping part is over.
Italy: Fruit Battle
If oranges seem harmless to you, that’s probably because nobody has ever thrown one straight at your head. Every year in February the Italian town of Ivrea puts on an orange battle, in which the town overthrow a bad emperor. A horse-drawn cart carrying oranges and players representing the emperor’s evil helpers is drawn into the square. The people on foot have special uniforms. Cuts and hurts are to be expected. The orange juice in a cut is certainly an acquired taste. The battle looks like chaos, but there is an important limit: throwing oranges at the horses is strictly forbidden.
Japan: Extreme Log Ride
Once every six years the Onbashira festival takes place in the Lake Suwa region in Japan. The purpose of the festival is to replace the 16 logs that stand at the corners of the four buildings of the Suwa Grand Shrine. The celebrations begin in the mountains in April when 16 carefully chosen fir trees in the mountains are cut down using traditional logging tools. They are then dragged down to the temple without the use of mechanized equipment. So people have to work in large teams to hold them up mountains and across rivers. The entire journey, usually about 10 kilometers, is dangerous. This can result in many injuries and death.
1. Why should the actors in Spain dress as devils while skipping over babies?A.To practise their breath. | B.To make children happy. |
C.To challenge themselves. | D.To remove the children’s original sin. |

Where to stay
The Khao San Road was a famous traveller spot even before Leonardo di Caprio’s character in the film The Beach stayed there. But it’s noisy, not very pretty and not very Thai. For something more authentic, Phra Kanong offers an alternative place to stay, with its fantastic street markets where every day Bangkok people eat, work and live. It’s not as convenient for the main tourist sites as the Khao San Road, but it has a Skytrain station so you can be at the Grand Palace in 20 minutes.
How to get around
Bangkok’s traffic can be a nightmare. Sure, you can easily take a taxi --- if you want to spend hours stuck in traffic jams---but there are two much better ways to get around the city. To explore the temples and historical sites, catch an express boat river taxi or a long tail boat along the Chao Phraya river and the canals. For the modern part of the city, the Skytrain is a fast, cheap way to travel from the river to the shopping malls and nightlife of Sukhumvit and the famous Chatuchak street market.
Where to eat
The simple answer is: everywhere! Thai street food is among the best in the world, and for around $5 you can eat a filling and delicious meal. Some food stands have little plastic seats where you can sit and eat and they cook the same dish over and over, like fried chicken on rice or Pad Thai noodles. Head for Chinatown --- Yaowarat Street --- and choose whatever looks most interesting from the many excellent Chinese and Thai restaurants and food stands.
1. Where do local Thai people often go?A.Khao San Road. | B.Phra Kanong. | C.Chao Phraya. | D.Grand Palace. |
A.a taxi. | B.a bus. | C.a boat. | D.the Skytrain. |
A.One night is enough time to see Bangkok. |
B.Khao San Road is an authentic Thai area of the city. |
C.Phra Kanong is further away from the main tourist sites than Khao San Road is. |
D.You need to choose where to eat carefully, as not everywhere is good. |

Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test — unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
1. The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______ .A.it is unfair to other people |
B.it does harm to their health |
C.teachers should punish them |
D.teachers shouldn’t stop them at once |
A.cheating isn’t a good idea |
B.why kids cheat in the test |
C.some kids can’t pass the test without cheating |
D.some kids don’t spend the time studying |
A.cheaters are often thought highly of |
B.people show no respect for those who cheat |
C.parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble |
D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice |
A.spend more time on school than on sports |
B.find good solutions instead of cheating |
C.try hard to be intelligent rather than lazy |
D.ask their classmates for good methods of study |

Goldenrod is one of the most successful and widespread alien plant species. It is often referred to as “the flower of the devil”, as it spreads extremely fast and causes other plants to die.
Besides Hubei province, the plant has also been found expanding in other provinces such as Jiangxi and Zhejiang. Although local authorities have tried to get rid of the plant, it is proving to be a difficult task. Goldenrod represents just one of the alien species that are aggressive towards the country’s native species. Statistics show that by 2020, nearly 800 kinds of alien species had invaded the country, among which 638 species have invaded the country’s agricultural and forestry ecosystems, causing direct economic losses of about 200 billion yuan ($ 31.36 billion).
At the United Nations Biodiversity Conference held in Kunming, Yunnan province, the invasion of alien species was the subject of discussions, as it was regarded as one of the two most important factors leading to the loss of biodiversity, the other being human-caused ecological damage.
China passed its Biosecurity Law on April 15, 2021, which provides the legal basis for preventing the invasion of alien species and protecting biodiversity in the country. The relevant departments also strictly carry out port inspections and quarantines (检疫) so as to keep harmful organisms out of the country, and they strengthen early warning and monitoring systems so as to address the invasion as early as possible.
However, while government departments are making every effort to prevent and control the situation, the participation of the people should not be ignored. It is also necessary, as Wuhan is doing, to encourage people to pay attention to invasive species and actively play a role in keeping them at bay. Preventing any invasion by an alien species and protecting biodiversity should not just be the government departments fighting alone, but also a people’s war.
1. Why does the author present thestatistics in paragraph 3?A.To make the passage more persuasive. |
B.To highlight how serious the issue is. |
C.To explain the reason for the invasion of the country. |
D.To show the influence of Goldenrod on the ecosystem. |

B.Relevant departments’ warning of goldenrod. |
C.The legal basis to protect biodiversity. |
D.The importance of port inspections and quarantines. |
A.Building some barriers for the species. |
B.Preventing the flowers from growing too fast. |
C.Keeping the alien species safe at the port. |
D.Both the government and individuals should resist the invasion of alien species. |
A.In a biology magazine. | B.In a science fiction. |
C.In a sports newspaper. | D.In a history book. |
Tu’s finding has saved millions’ lives during the 40 years. This also proves the value of her research product. The reward is never too late in that aspect. The moment of joy and satisfaction came when she discovered the artemisinin( 青蒿素) after all kinds of failures in experiments.
As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s winning completely surprised Chinese people, who have long been wondering when the first Chinese Nobel laureate in natural science would appear.
Let’s backtrack to 40 years ago. Tu accomplished the breakthrough findings without access to any advanced equipment, communication with outside world and papers to research. However, over the 40 years, improvements and innovations have transformed everything. Nowadays, Chinese scientists have the passion to invent. As Premiere Li Keqiang mentioned in his letter, “Tu’s winning the prize signifies China’s prosperity and progress in scientific and technological field”.
Tu’s record-breaking winning serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. There is no way to measure how much you spend on scientific research and compare it with how much reward you get.

【推荐1】That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week ago, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers(抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?”I thought I was dreaming How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 A.M. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
