If you have traveled a lot before, you might know that there are huge differences in communication between people from one country to another. In some cultures, people are loud, direct and even stop others speaking during a conversation. In others, people are usually soft-spoken, use flowery or indirect language and wait patiently for others to finish their talk.
During a business meeting, these differences are likely to come out. Try to get used to the way your business partners communicate, e. g. When calling and greeting your business partners and your boss, always use their last names and titles unless you are invited to do otherwise.
Hierarchies(等级制度)may have a great influence on the communication style in your new environment, so it is important to keep an eye on this. In some cultures, the elder business partner may be the one who is making the decisions at a meeting. Failing to know their identities within the company or to greet them with respect can leave a bad impression.
Generally speaking, well-dressed and arriving at a business meeting well-prepared are two very useful parts for your success in international business. Whether you are in France or in China, your business partners will appreciate your efforts to make a good impression.
Cultural differences also become obvious in different understanding of time. A popular example: Everyone would agree that Germans are well-known for their being on time. In many African and South American countries, however, agreed time is often treated like a general guideline rather than something one has to be strictly observed. Therefore, it is necessary to ask yourself; Is the time for a meeting unchangeable, or does it allow for some flexibility(灵活性)?Will you ruin a business deal by arriving late, or is it perfectly acceptable to let family matters over business meetings? Seeing how some cultures care about time more than others, it is always best to be on time at first.

The early immigrants(移民)who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of America from 1607 to 1892. Frontiers were pushed further west. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism(个人主义), self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage(遗产)of America.
In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to America three times. They brought their own culture to America and later on, different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture was formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values.
The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the fight of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism(多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States.
Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middle-aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. The people in America have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime.

Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily, but truly can't manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes,
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

However, since the 1990s, the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists. Now, a new study declares that the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria which could devastate the area’s native bird population.
Humans can infect animals with illnesses such as the flu. Researchers, however, believed that the Antarctic animals were immune to the danger due to the continent’s extreme weather. However, microbiologist Marta Cerda-Cuellar was not convinced.
She and some colleagues decided to examine waste samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves.
The results of their study revealed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste. This included a common strain (品种) of bacteria that causes food poisoning in humans. The researchers say the bacteria strains were resistant to commonly-used human antibiotics, indicating they were brought in by the visitors, rather than migratory birds.
“These strains, which are a common cause for infections in humans and livestock, do not usually cause death outbreaks in wild animals,” says Gonzalez-Solis. “However, the emerging or invasive pathogens (病原体) that arrive to highly sensitive populations could have severe consequences and cause the local collapse and extinction of some populations.” The researcher also fears the presence of these bugs could foreshadow the arrival of other, more deadly, pathogens as the number of tourists people increases.
Experts believe the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the birds is to impose stricter regulations or, at least, put the ones already in place into effect. For example, while the Antarctica Treaty requires visitors to carry their waste back home to safeguard the pristine environment, the regulation is rarely enforced. Fortunately, nowadays some officials are taking steps to save the vulnerable birds before it’s too late.

Employment is about a lot more than just a paycheck: It provides a way to do something for the community, the chance to develop friendships, and a way to improve our health. As with all of us, the work we do and the career we have often show others our abilities.
People with disabilities who have been welcomed into the workforce at all levels have proven to be born clever and creative. Stephen Hawking unlocked secrets of the universe(宇宙) from a wheelchair. Engineer Ralf Hotchkiss created the Torbellino wheelchair. The voice-activated TV remote control(遥控器) was invented by blind engineer.
According to the University of New Hampshire’s Annual Disability Statistics Compendium, there are millions of working-age people with disabilities living in our nation. Even though most of them would like to find meaningful employment, only about a third have been able to find jobs.
There are also millions of job openings today and millions of people with disabilities ready to work. As bosses face a real shortage of able employees, employing people with disabilities can be a great solution.
There are many solutions that can ensure the success of employees with disabilities. Askian.org. offers employers and job hunters free guidance about how to use technology to ensure inclusion. Tapability.org offers thousands of resumes(简历) of professionals(专业人员) with disabilities in all 50 states. Besides, the National Disability Mentoring Coalition works to guide people with disabilities to start their careers. So if you have a job opening, why not invite people with disabilities for interviews?
Any of the millions of people with disabilities now being refused could be the person who discovers Alzheimer’s(阿尔茨海默氏病) prevention or a new clean energy source. We must imagine a world where we expect more from people with disabilities and enable them to achieve success.

It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. "Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happened to your homemade lunch?" I asked. "I lose it," she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, "I don't believe you, Katie. " She didn't care. "Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?" I took a new track. "No. I just lose it," she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.
The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name on the bag said "Katie".
Now I understood and I talked to Katie. It seemed that the new boy never brought a lunch, and he wouldn't go to the lunch line for a free lunch. He had told Katie his secret and asked her not to tell anyone that his parents wanted him to get a free lunch at school. Katie asked me not to tell her parents, but I drove to her house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I had never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn't care that her parents and teacher were disappointed in her. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared.

【推荐2】Dan studied the tracks on the ground. For the third night in a row, the adult bear had returned. Was she here because she was just looking for an easy meal? Or was she here because of the baby bear locked in the pen? If that was the reason, what did she want with the cub?
Dan thought about the cub. He knew there was a lot the cub could learn from an adult bear. He did not want to disturb or interfere with the bears getting to know each other. But the cub had been brought in injured. As the cub’s guardian, Dan had a responsibility to make sure that the cub was safe. Perhaps he had been hurt by this very bear. On the other hand, what if the adult were friendly? She could teach the cub things he had to learn if he were to live in the wilderness. Dan decided it was worth taking a chance. He would let the adult bear near the cub. But he would be ready for trouble, if this turned out to be a mistake.
That night, Dan waited in the shadows near the pen. In his hand was a big flashlight. If the adult bear tried to hurt the cub, he would try to scare her off with the light. If that did not work, he had a loud horn with him. He thought that the sudden noise from the horn would drive her away.
Dan did not have to wait very long. Soon there was a rustling in the woods. Then the adult proclaimed her presence with a low growl and emerged from behind a tree. She was quick in movement and healthy. Dan hoped she would scare easily.
As soon as the cub heard her a frightening low noise, he became active and started toward the fence in an awkward run. When the two bears met at the fence, the adult stood and put her front paws against it. The cub tried to do the same, but tottered and fell forward. The adult bear snorted. Dan was not sure what the snort meant. Then the cub stuck his nose through the fence in a friendly greeting. How would the adult respond? Dan’s heart raced. He raised the flashlight and the horn, ready to act.
The adult leaned forward and gently rubbed her nose against the cub. Dan lowered the flashlight. Everything was going to be fine.

It may make it harder for you to fall asleep and prevent you from getting a good night’s rest. Most sleep doctors suggest turning off screens an hour before bedtime. The reality is that, for the majority of us, cell phones, tablets, or TVs are the last things we look at before we close our eyes. Our smartphones can sometimes feel like an extension of our bodies because we’re so physically connected to them. Screens in general have become such a prominent part of our lives that it can feel completely unrealistic to put them away earlier in the evening. But according to sleep doctors, it’s a smart idea to at least give it a try.
At night, your brain starts to produce a hormone called melatonin(褪黑色素), which keeps your circadian rhythm on track and helps you fall asleep, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Being exposed to bright light suppresses melatonin production, says Philip Richard Gehrman, a behavioral sleep specialist and associate professor of clinical psychology in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “Blue light has the strongest impact,” he adds, “and the types of LED lights used in most electronic devices are strongest in the blue part of the spectrum.”
Why is blue light particularly bad? Dr. Gehrman explains that the very specialized cells in the eyes that feed into our sleep system and circadian rhythms, called retinal ganglion cells, respond strongly to blue light in comparison to other types of light.
“Beyond the light you’re exposing yourself to, there’s also the simple truth that it’s easy to get caught up in what you’re reading or watching, which leads to staying awake a lot later than you should,” says Shelby Harris, clinical psychologist in private practice in New York. “Even if you’ve got the self-control to switch off Netflix after a reasonable number of episodes, depending on what you just watched or read, you may be too mentally stimulated to fall asleep anyway.”

You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.
