The Impossible Burger is a burger that tastes exactly like beef, but it was made using vegetables and science. There are many kinds of “veggie burgers” for vegetarians (素食者),but this one is made for meat lovers. The company that makes this burger, Impossible Foods, wants to change the food that people eat to reduce climate change.
Scientist Celeste works on the flavor (风味) and texture (纹理) of the burger. She looks for the key points of beef its flavor, smell and look. Then those points are copied using plant based ingredients (成分),which make the burger look and taste like blood and give it a meaty texture.
The Impossible Burger has the same nutrition as beef, without the unhealthy parts. In fact, taste, nutrition and reducing climate change were all equally important when creating the burger.
Cows are actually terrible for the environment. They need lots of land and water, and they create greenhouse gases. However, an Impossible Burger uses 95% less land, 75% less water, and creates 85-87% less greenhouse gases than a beef burger.
That's why this burger was made for meat lovers. The goal is for them to eat less meat in order to protect environment. At the same time they can still eat delicious burgers that taste like real meat.

Whether you like them boiled, baked or fried—potatoes are what we call a staple. This means they are a kind of basic food that you can build on. You can cover them in butter, salt and pepper or sour cream and herbs. And for people who eat pork, you have not lived until you have eaten a baked potato topped with cheese and bacon!
We have a potato expression to describe a person like that: simple, basic, common. If someone is a “meat-and-potatoes” kind of person, they prefer eating simple meals such as—well, meat and potatoes. They are not interested in complex, expensive food. They are unpretentious.
Men are often described by this expression. When I hear about a “meat-and-potatoes” man, I picture a big, beefy-guy. He likes to wear blue jeans and a simple T-shirt. He probably drives a truck and can fix it himself. He is a simple, no-nonsense kind of guy.
It is a little less common, but we can also describe a woman as a “meat-and-potatoes” kind of person. This type of woman not only likes to eat steak and hamburgers, she is also a down-to-earth (实际的) person. She likes simple things and can take care of herself.
People can also be called “small potatoes”. It is a way of saying they are not a danger. If police in a big city do not have enough resources, they probably won’t waste manpower on small potatoes, like bicycle thieves(小偷). Please note that we may say “small potatoes” for unimportant matters, but we do not say “big potatoes” for important ones. English is funny that way!
1. Why does the author mention different ways to cook potatoes in Paragraph 2?A.To recommend his favourite potato dish. |
B.To introduce different types of potatoes in different countries’ cooking. |
C.To show that potatoes are a main food for most people in their lives. |
D.To show that people have not lived until they have eaten a baked potato. |
A.Special. | B.Straightforward. | C.Rich. | D.Lazy. |
A.Women who like to wear blue jeans. | B.Women who can look after themselves well. |
C.Women who do not like to eat hamburgers. | D.Women who like expensive things. |
A.Women are not willing to be described as “meat-and-potatoes”. |
B.A boy who stole a piece of bread might be called a “small potato” by the police. |
C.People often use “big potatoes” to describe very important things. |
D.If someone is in danger, he can be called “meat-and-potatoes”. |

The new research questioned almost 4,000 high school students about the energy drinks and found that boys were much more likely to drink them.
Australia requires companies to label their drinks as “not suitable for children”, yet the findings published in a journal showed many teens still believed the drinks were beneficial.
The energy drink market is expected to grow to a $72 billion by 2024 and reach $108.4 billion by 2031.
Separate market analysis showed teens who drink energy drinks were more likely to show anti-social behaviour, including smoking, alcohol consumption and other things. Energy drink consumption was also found connected with headaches, stomachaches and especially insomnia, which is common among teens and makes them extremely sleepy and unable to concentrate on their study.
One 16-year-old girl said she did not make a habit of drinking the energy drinks, but sometimes bought one after school.
“I know they’re not great for you, but sometimes I get to the end of a school day and I am just very tired,” she said, “You get up at around 7 a.m., sit through a whole school day and then go home, only to study through to 11 p.m.—if you don’t have extra-curricular activities. It’s not something I recommend, but they taste good and sometimes I feel like I’d benefit from caffeine.”
Due to the fact that teenagers incorrectly believed energy drinks were beneficial for their health, the researchers suggested it was necessary to educate students on the health risks.

The turtles typically live at the bottom of deep rivers and streams in northern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Adults can grow up to 3.6 feet long and weigh as much as 440 pounds. During monsoon (季风) months in central India and dry months in other regions, the turtles lay up to 190 eggs in a nest on the beach and cover it with dirt to protect the eggs. When the babies hatch, they can fit in a person’s palm, at 1.5 inches long.
The San Diego Zoo got its first two Indian narrow-headed softshell turtles in 1997. The zoo planned to breed them and hoped to learn more about the species, whose numbers had begun to drop due to pollution, destruction of their habitats, and capture by humans for their eggs, meat, or use as pets. The species is listed as endangered, and researchers don’t know how many remain in the wild.
After learning that it only had female turtles, the zoo added a male to the habitat in 2001. Staff have been waiting for over 20 years to see if the turtles would breed. This summer, zookeepers found four nests in the enclosure. They hatched 11 turtles in August. Then, in September, staff members found 30 more tiny turtles in a nest they hadn’t noticed. “They are kind of cute,” said Kim Gray, head of the zoo.
The babies were moved to an indoor habitat where they can be protected and studied. The zoo plans to give about a half of the baby turtles to other zoos and aquariums that want to help protect the species. “This is a thrilling moment for us,” Gray said, “and a big step forward in the preservation of this species.”
1. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2?A.To highlight the importance of protecting the turtles. |
B.To investigate the living environment of the turtles. |
C.To show the major stages of the turtles’ growth. |
D.To give a general description of the turtles. |

However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source (资源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, they don't recycle much of the plastic they use. In 2006, Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.
So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a recycling bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in halves, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.
1. What is not mentioned about bottled water in this passage? It’s ______.A.expensive | B.healthy | C.clean | D.easy |
A.energy | B.oil | C.soil | D.plants |
A.10% | B.50% | C.80% | D.90% |
A.To drop them into the river. | B.To make a plant pot. |

“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?” says Alia Khan, one of the authors of the new study. “We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.”
Black carbon is the leftover thing from burning plants or fossil fuels. Soot in Antarctica comes primarily from waste gases of cruise ships (游轮), vehicles, airplanes and electrical generators, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe. The dark particles (微粒) coat white snow and absorb heat from the sun the way a black T-shirt does on a warm day. The blanket of dark bits speeds up melting that was already happening more quickly because of global warming. When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat.
“These are the mirrors on our planet,” says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast. “When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they are less reflective. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.”
As a scientist who personally visits Antarctica every year, Khan says she is troubled by her own research results. On the one hand, she goes to Antarctica to collect crucial data about how quickly the snow and ice there are disappearing. “But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,” she says, “and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.” That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.

Stanley Kosgey, in charge of conservation education at the center, says the tallest animals in the world have never really gotten the same attention from conservationists and governments that other African mammals have. In some ways, he thinks, it's because they're hard to miss. In Kenya, it's not rare to see half a dozen of them as you drive past some fields on the highway. It can take you several safaris (旅行队)before you catch sight of a lion.
“Giraffes are in what I would call a silent extinction," Kosgey says.
In a lot of ways, he says, a perfect storm has fallen on the species. Climate change means longer droughts and new diseases; civil unrest means giraffes become easy food; and as African countries grow, humans have encroached (入侵)on wildlife areas and the removal of trees becomes a huge problem. Giraffes are huge creatures, and they require a lot of space and plants.
Kosgey says the good news is that the world has begun to pay attention. In Kenya, which has some of the best conservation policies on the continent, there is a plan underway to treat giraffes in the same way that lions, rhinos and elephants are treated. That's to put in place detailed action plans and programs to make sure those animals thrive. The first step for giraffes is to get a deeper understanding of their population by conducting a survey.
Kosgey says their conservation effort alone has saved the Rothschild's giraffe. There are now about 650 of them in Kenya. Worldwide, there are 1,671 Rothschild's, about 26 percent more than there were in the 1960s, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
“They are tall, graceful animals and they should be heard/5 Kosgey says.

Studying grammar will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules when creating sentences instead of naturally saying a sentence like a native. Remember that only a small part of English speakers know more than 20% of all the grammar rules. Many ESL students know more grammar than native speakers. I can confidently say this with experience. I am a native English speaker, majored in English Literature, and have been teaching English for more than 10 years. However, many of my students know more details about English grammar than I do. When they sometimes ask me about grammar, I can easily look up the definition (定义) and apply it, but I can’t tell them the answer off the top of my head.
I often ask my native English friends some grammar questions, and only a few of them know the correct answer. However, they are fluent in English and can read, speak, listen, and communicate effectively.

Meta hopes RSC will help build entirely new AI systems that can, for example, power real-time voice translation to large groups of people, each speaking a different language. Such an operation fits with Meta’s stated goal of developing technologies to build a future “metaverse”, a term used to describe a non-physical world. Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, “I believe the metaverse, a highly virtual world where people in the world gather to socialize, play, and work is the next chapter for the Internet.” Such a system requires very powerful computers. The supercomputer will be able to deal with written information, images and videos that are in hundreds of different languages, up to 20 times faster than current systems.
Meta said with access to “real-world examples” from its social platforms, its supercomputer will train new AI to recognize different kinds of content and perform actions examining huge amounts of data. It added that data used will be encrypted before entering the training process to ensure that it is not accessible without authority.
Now, Meta still uses a combination of humans and AI to identify and remove, what it considers, harmful content and misinformation. Some critics say the company is not doing enough to block bad content. It has also face government examination over its business methods and users’ privacy in the United States and Europe. But the company believes its supercomputer will be helpful in “its first priority — no threatening users’ information security while approaching harmful content.”

Fewer wolves and thieves meant less demand for dogs for protection; the internal combustion engine(内燃机)made horses unneeded; modern sanitation(卫生设备)kept rats in check and made cats less useful. No longer necessities, domestic animals became luxuries. Pet-keeping seems to kick in when household incomes rise above roughly $5,000. It is booming.
The trend is not a new one. Archaeologists(考古学家)have found 10,000-year-old graves in which dogs and people are buried together. Some cultures -- such as in Scandinavia, where dogs have long been both working dogs and companions -- have kept pets for thousands of years. But these days the pet-keeping urge has spread even to parts of the world which have no tradition of sinking into a comfortable chair with a furry creature.
The pet business is growing even faster than pet numbers, because people are spending more and more money on them. No longer are they food - waste - recyclers, fed with the remains that fall from their masters’ tables. Pet - food shelves are full of delicacies crafted to satisfy a range of appetites, including ice cream for dogs and foods for pets that are old, diabetic or suffer from sensitive digestion; a number of internet services offer food, tailored to the pet’s individual tastes.
In the business this is called “pet humanisation” -- the tendency of pet owners to treat their pets as part of the family. This is evident in the names given to dogs, which have evolved from Fido, Rex and Spot to -- in America -- Bella, Lucy and Max. It is evident in the growing market for pet clothing, pet grooming and pet hotels.
People still assume that pets must be working for humanity in some way, perhaps making people healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for that is weak. Rather, new research suggests that dogs have evolved those irresistible “puppy - dog eyes” precisely to affect human emotions. It has worked. The species that once enslaved others now works very hard to pay for the care of its pets. Sentimenta(l 多愁善感的)Americans often refer to themselves not as cat-owners but as the cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”. South Koreans go one further, describing themselves as cat “butlers”. Watch an unlucky dog-walker trailing “his” hound(猎犬), plastic bag in hand to pick up its mess, and you have to wonder: who’s in charge now?

The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and drug companies weren’t interested in supporting research into such a rare disease.
However, the parents still refused to give up and spent every available hour in medical libraries and talking to anyone who would help. Through trial and error, they finally created a cure from ingredients (调料) commonly found in the kitchen. The cure, named "Lorenzo’s Oil", saved the boy’s life. Despite the good results, scientists and doctors remained unconvinced. They said there was no real evidence that the oil worked and that the treatment was just a theory. As a result, some families with ALD children were reluctant to try it.
Finally, the boy’s father organized an international study to test the oil. After ten years of trials, the answer is: the oil keeps ALD children healthy.
