【推荐1】It was time for more difficult speech therapy. Delvin Washington said his name again and again, making sure to bite his lower lip to pronounce the V in his first name. The 18-year-old from Texas, US, has had to practise this every day since he woke up from a coma in late September.

Over half a year ago, Washington was preparing for the biggest day of his young life-graduating from high school. But on a cloudy day in May, he had a serious car accident.

He survived, but his life changed forever. His friends have left for college, his mom has returned to work and he recently began all-day physical rehabilitation. He is relearning almost everything, from the names of his best friends to simple physical tasks, like swallowing his saliva (唾液).

His friends and family have given him a lot of support. While Washington lay in a coma in hospital, friends and family filled his room during visits. They celebrated his 18th birthday in July while he was still unconscious.

Two days after Thanksgiving, eight friends from high school visited Washington at his home. The friends looked through photos on Facebook, showing them all to Washington. As he sat in his wheelchair, friends asked him to recognize the people in the photos, helping him recover his brain.

Washington’s popularity doesn’t come from nowhere. He was determined to become a police officer after college and behaved like a respectable police officer at school.

His high school principal, Eric Markinson, said Washington was always a gentleman. “He was incredibly gracious (和善的) and incredibly helpful,” he said.

His accident has damaged Washington’s brain. It has caused his left side, from his face to his feet, to all but shut down. His personality has also changed. The serious police officer behavior is gone. He laughs a lot and smiles when he sees children, his mom said.

Now Washington is working hard on all-day rehabilitation. So far, he has made tremendous (巨大的) improvement, said his therapist Lindsay Sims.

“I try to live as independently as possible,” Washington said slowly but firmly.

【推荐2】To this day, I remember my mum's letters. It all started in December, 1941. Every night she wrote to my brother Johnny, who had joined the army that summer. We had not heard from him since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

I didn't understand why my mum kept writing to Johnny when he never wrote back.

＂Wait and see—we'll get a letter from him one day,” she claimed.

Mum said that there was a direct link from the brain to the written word that was just as strong as the light God has given us. She trusted that this light would find Johnny.

I don't know if she said that to calm herself, dad or all of us down. But I do know that it helped us stick together, and one day a letter really did arrive. Johnny was alive on an island in the Pacific.

I had always been amused by the fact that mum signed her letters, Cecilia Capuzzi, and I made fun of her about that. “Why don't you just write “Mom”?” I said.

Around next spring mum had got two more sons to write to. Every evening she wrote three letters which she gave me and dad afterwards so we could add our greetings.

By and by, the rumor about mum's letters spread.

One day, a small woman knocked at our door. Her voice trembled as she asked: "Is it true you write letters?”

＂I write to my sons."

“And you can read too?” whispered the woman.

“Sure.”

The woman opened her bag and pulled out a pile of airmail letters. Read...please read them aloud to me.

The letters were from the woman's son, a soldier in Europe.

Mum had no difficulty reading the letters one by one and translated them from English to Italian. The woman's eyes welled up with tears.

“＂Now I have to write to him," she said. But how was she going to do it?

＂Make some coffee, Octavia," mum yelled to me. She seated the woman and started to write. When she had finished, she read the letter aloud to the woman.

＂How did you know that was exactly what I wanted to say?”

＂I often say and look at my boys' letters, just like you, without a clue about what to write.”

A few days later, more and more people in our town asked mum to write letters for them. Sometimes she would write letters all day long. Even after the war, many people turned to mum. On one occasion, mum admitted that she had always had a secret dream of writing a novel.

“Why didn't you?” I asked.

“All people in this world are here with one particular purpose,” she said. “Obviously, mine is to write letters. A letter unites people like nothing else. It can make them cry and laugh.”

Today, all mum's letters are lost. But those who got them still talk about her and cherish the memory of her letters in their hearts.

Penguin, Reindeer(驯鹿) and Fox were great friends. One day, Penguin and Reindeer, found a lot of fruit, and decided to keep it a secret. On the way home, they met Fox, who saw them so happy, asked them why. They told him they couldn't say, because it was a secret, but Fox asked them to trust him, so they told him about the fruit. After they arrived at the village, Fox told the secret to everyone in the village. When Penguin and Reindeer returned to the place where they had found the fruit, the animals of the village had already been there and eaten it up.

On that same day, Penguin and Reindeer found another place full of vegetables, and told Fox again. But the same thing happened again with Fox. Penguin and Reindeer were angry with the fox, and they decided to teach him a lesson. The next day they told Fox that they had found a lake so full of fish that they didn't need to make any effort to catch them. Fox again told everyone in the village about it. The next day, Fox came by, covered in cuts and the bruises(伤痕). After telling all the animals that the lake was full of fish, everyone, including the polar bear(北极熊), went there. But, not finding anything, they felt deceived(欺骗), and gave Fox a good beating.

Fox learned that keeping people's trust is very important, and that you have to get it in the first place and always keep your word.

We’ve been in China for a month now. Dad, Mom, Harry and I moved to Tianjin on 25 August. We’re not very far from Beijing. Two days ago, we celebrated my 16th birthday. It was great celebrating in China; the only thing that was strange was the cake—here they’re not as sweet as the ones in New York. On Monday school starts—I wonder what it will be like.

On my first day I was looking around for a locker to put my books in. However, here all the students keep all of their books at their desks. We stay in the same classroom because apparently we don’t have to go from class to class—teachers come to us!

Today we selected teacher assistants for each subject. Their duties are to collect homework, make announcements, and do other stuff (事情) for the teachers and the students. It’s kind of a big deal here! Since I am from the US, I was asked to be the English assistant. I felt so proud but quite nervous at the same time because I wasn’t sure what I had to do, but I accepted the job anyway.

Boy, what a week! Now we have nine classes every day, including the morning class, a combination of our American schools “Homeroom”and “Study Hall”. I think Chinese students work too much!   I have to do my homework when I get back home. I don’t even have time to watch TV or surf the Internet like before. I sometimes miss New York and my school because we didn’t have to study so much. We had more time to hang out with our classmates and neighbors; here, besides their usual classes, students are involved in weekend classes in subjects such as English, Chinese and math.

I get a lot of attention, being from another country. Everyone wants to practice English with me!   A really cute girl even asked me for my phone number on my second day and sent me a text message!   I’m making a lot more friends now. I just need a lot of help to improve my Chinese. Some students want to do a language exchange program with me. Nice!

New students~~photographs

You will be requested to upload a passport sized photograph as part of the online registration process. This should be a JPG file with a size of no more than 1 MB. Your photograph should be a portrait image in proportion （比例）to a 6 "x4" portrait photograph. It should be taken in colour and must not have been beautified with image filters （滤光镜）.

Your student ID card will be provided to you by your department during Welcome Week. Please be aware that you will not receive this smart card during Welcome Week if you do not upload your image online by 4 September 2020.

Replacement cards

If your student ID card no longer works or has been damaged, or if you have changed your personal or programme details, you should call into the Student Administration Centre （SAC） to request a new one. Please ensure that you bring your existing card with you. Your replacement card will be produced free of charge.

If your card has been reported to the Police as stolen, please also call into the SAC to request a replacement, bringing with you a copy of your Police Crime Report paperwork. Your card will be Produced free of charge.

If your card has been lost, a fee of £5 is charged for the production of a replacement card. You are requested to use our online payment service.

Note： Replacement cards will be available for you to collect seven working days after making the request. As a security measure, you are requested to collect your card in person at the SAC.

It’s interesting to see that family background has an effect on teenagers’ worries. Teenagers from low-income families worried more about losing weight and bullying (欺凌弱小). Teenagers from higher income families were more likely to worry about fitting in and peer pressure (同辈压力).
