【推荐1】Researchers led by Associate Professor Naoto Hirano from Tohoku University have discovered a new petit-spot volcano（次点火山）at the oldest section of the Pacific Plate.

Petit-spot volcanoes are a relatively new phenomenon on Earth. They are young, small volcanoes that come about along cracks from the base of tectonic plates（构造板块）. As the tectonic plates sink deeper into the Earth's upper mantle（地幔）, cracks occur where the plate begins to bend causing small volcanoes to erupt. The first discovery, of petit-spot volcanoes was made in 2006 near the Japan Trench, located to the northeast of Japan.

Rock samples collected from previous studies of petit-spot volcanoes show that the magma（岩浆）erupted comes directly from the asthenosphere（岩流圈）-the uppermost part of Earth's mantle which drives the movement of tectonic plates. Studying petit-spot volcanoes provides a window into the largely unknown asthenosphere, giving scientists a greater understanding of plate tectonics, the kind of rocks existing there, and the melting process undergone below the tectonic plates.

The volcano was discovered in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, near Marcus Island. Japan's easternmost point. The volcano is thought to have erupted less than 3 million years ago due to the sinking of the Pacific Plate deeper into the mantle of the Mariana Trench. Previously, this area is thought to have contained only seamounts and islands formed 70-140 million years ago. The research team initially suspected the presence of a small volcano after observing data collected by the Japan Coast Guard. They then analyzed rock samples collected by the detector（检测器）Shnkai 6500, diving to depths of 6500 meters and observing the presence of volcano.

“The discovery of this new Volcano provides an exciting opportunity for us to explore this area further, and hopefully reveal further petit-spot volcano,” says Professor Hirano. 【推荐3】Homemade Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients

● 1/2 cup olive oil

● 1/4 cup coconut oil with natural SPF (sun protection factor)

● 1/4 cup beeswax

● 2 tablespoons zine oxide (This is a version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to breathe into the powder)

● Optional: up to 1 teaspoon red raspberry seed of

● Optional: up to l teaspoon carrot seed oil

● Optional: up to l teaspoon vitamin E oil

● Optional: essential oils, vanilla extractor other natural extracts to suit your preference

Instructions

Combine ingredients except zine oxide in a larger glass jar. I have a mason jar (see Fig. 1) that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from foods.

Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.

Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.

As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to mix. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zine oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar on tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Store in a cool dry place or in the fridge.

Use you use regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.

Additional Notes:

● Beeswax is for water protection. This sunscreen is somewhat, but not completely, waterproof and will need to be reapplied after sweating or swimming.

● Make sure not to breathe in the zine oxide — use a mask if necessary!

● This recipe has an SPF of about 15, though adding more zine oxide will increase the SPF.

● Add more beeswax to make thicker sunscreen, less to make smooth sunscreen.

● I recommend coco mt or vanilla extract for sweet smell.

● I prefer to store in a small can nig jar and apply like a body butter. It will be thicker, especially if you use coconut oil in the recipe.

● Remove the zine oxide and this makes an excellent lotion recipe!
