Homemade Natural Sunscreen
Ingredients
● 1/2 cup olive oil
● 1/4 cup coconut oil with natural SPF (sun protection factor)
● 1/4 cup beeswax
● 2 tablespoons zine oxide (This is a version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to breathe into the powder)
● Optional: up to 1 teaspoon red raspberry seed of
● Optional: up to l teaspoon carrot seed oil
● Optional: up to l teaspoon vitamin E oil
● Optional: essential oils, vanilla extractor other natural extracts to suit your preference
Instructions
Combine ingredients except zine oxide in a larger glass jar. I have a mason jar (see Fig. 1) that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from foods.
Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.
As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to mix. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zine oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar on tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!
Store in a cool dry place or in the fridge.
Use you use regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.
Additional Notes:
● Beeswax is for water protection. This sunscreen is somewhat, but not completely, waterproof and will need to be reapplied after sweating or swimming.
● Make sure not to breathe in the zine oxide — use a mask if necessary!
● This recipe has an SPF of about 15, though adding more zine oxide will increase the SPF.
● Add more beeswax to make thicker sunscreen, less to make smooth sunscreen.
● I recommend coco mt or vanilla extract for sweet smell.
● I prefer to store in a small can nig jar and apply like a body butter. It will be thicker, especially if you use coconut oil in the recipe.
● Remove the zine oxide and this makes an excellent lotion recipe!

Two years ago we broadcast our Foreign Student Series. Since then we have got more requests for information about how to attend American schools. So we will offer new reports in our series with the most current information.
Each week, we will discuss a part of the process of becoming an international student in the United States. Each report will also appear on the Internet at www. Tingroom.com. Currently you can find the programs from the last time our series aired.
Foreign students who want to study in the United States have many questions. How do I find out about American colleges? How do I choose the right one for me? What tests must I take? What kinds of documents will I need? How much will it cost? We will answer these and other questions in our reports.
We will discuss the American system of higher education. We will tell about financial aid and rules about working in jobs while a student. We will discuss required tests and explain English language requirements. And we will tell where to find help in other countries.
Our reports will also describe a few of the three thousand colleges and universities in the United States. We will discuss programs of study as well as living situations at American schools. For students without the ability to come to the United States, we will tell how to take classes by computer. We will also examine how the threat of terrorism has changed some of the rules for study in the United States.
In researching our series, we talked not only to officials in education and government, but also to some foreign students. Most students say planning ahead helped make their educational experience successful. That is the purpose of this series—to help you plan.

Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.
“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”
Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.
Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”

The olinguito is a hairy orange-brown creature with a sweet face and big eyes. The animal has small, rounded ears and lives in the trees. An adult weighs one kilogram and measures about 75 centimeters, with half of those centimeters taken up by its ringed tail.
Most of the time, it likes to eat fruit, although it also eats meat. Active at night, the animal has lived in Colombia and Ecuador for a long time. But the olinguito did not exist in science books before.
Kristofer Helgen is the curator (馆长) of mammals at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington. He led the research team that confirmed the existence of the olinguito. It had been mistaken for a look-alike animal —the similar but larger olingo (尖吻浣熊).
“Think about these foggy and dense cloud forests. This animal, like so many animals in the rainforest, only comes out at night. It doesn’t come out of the trees. It’s wet. It’s dark. It’s hard to find these animals.”
About 10 years of work led Kristofer Helgen from museum storage areas to cloud forests in South America. He got lucky when he communicated with a zoologist in Ecuador. The animal expert there made a short video that showed what scientists say is an olinguito in the trees. It confirms that the olinguito is different from the olingo. Mr. Helgen says even people who live near the olinguitos’ forests do not see it different from similar animals.
1. What can we learn about the olinguito from the text?A.It has a preference for meat. | B.It is much larger than the olingo. |
C.It was described in some science books. | D.It and the olingo are very similar in appearance. |

Seeing that his life was saved by the kindness of others, James decided to "pay it forward". Four years later, in 1954, he started giving blood.
The doctors soon discovered that James had a very rare type of antibody(抗体)---the anti-D antibody——in his blood.
In fact, the anti-D antibody could be used to deal with a condition called rhesus disease. In this disease, a pregnant(怀孕的)woman’s body recognizes certain markers on her baby's blood cells(细胞)as foreign. The mother's body then starts making lots of antibodies that destroy her baby's red blood cells. This unwanted course can cause serious illnesses during pregnancy, probably resulting in the baby's death。But James's blood was used to create a treatment plan that could stop the mother's body from becoming prepared in this way.
James was the very first person to give blood to Australia's Anti — D Program. James won the title of "the man with the golden arm” because he has given blood for 1. 173 times. He gave blood every two weeks for 60 years. But no matter how many times he's given blood there's one thing that will never change. " Every time I give blood, I never look at my arm. I look elsewhere or at the nurses, maybe talk to them a bit. I can't stand the sight of blood, and I can't stand pain, ” James said.
The Australian Red Cross says that the man's blood has helped save over two million babies. It is no wonder that he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his great deeds.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a "team game". We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no "matches" between teams of climbers, but when climbers are on a rockface linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously team work. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature, his sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

By 6 a.m. the fog began to lift. A pair of circles had been flattened. The wheat were bent but not broken. Outside the circles the wheat was untouched, and there were no footprints or other marks. The circles seemed to have come from nowhere. “ I can’t explain it at all ,” Mike Carrier said to himself with his eyes wide open.
Carrier is not alone since the early 1980s, more than 2000 circles have appeared in farmer’s fields. Most circles form at night between May and August.
Some believe the circles are caused by deer or some other animals. Others think of UFOs. “The circles are messages given by those who come from outer space,” says Michael Green. “Perhaps they are trying to get in touch with us.”
Pat Delgado has done research on crop circles since 1981. He believes that they are caused by “ some form of earth energy.”
Most scientists think that there’s no scientific basis to back up Green’s or Delgado’s theories. In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley told newsmen that since 1979 they had made circles throughout southern England to fool people who believed in UFOs. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Terence Meaden has visited more than1000 circles. Now he thinks he may have the answer. He believes true crop circles are made by vortex(旋风) which can flatten the crop.
Now crop circles are still found in southern England each summer. Are they really the traces of UFOs?
