On top of a few clothes, a small first-aid kit and notebooks, he is carrying a recorder, a video camera, a small computer and a satellite phone — a telephone that connects to a satellite and can be used in many places where cell-phones don’t work.
The journey is long: 21,000 miles! It will take seven years to complete it.
Salopek was born in California and spent his childhood in Mexico. He says he has always liked to travel and doesn’t like to rush. At the age of fourteen, he climbed Mount Whitney in California and crossed the state’s Sierra Nevada Mountains alone. When he was fifteen years old, he walked the length of Death Valley. He once rode a mule 2,000 miles through mountains in Mexico.
As a longtime reporter, Salopek has reported from Africa, Asia and Mexico. Now 51 years old, he plans to keep writing. As he travels around the world, he is writing stories about the people he meets and the way they live. He looks for how people find local solutions to big problems such as lack of food and water. He also records the sounds he hears and takes photos of the sky and the Earth’s surface.
The long walk started in the Rife Valley in Ethiopia in East Africa. Many consider East Africa to be home to the first humans, who lived 160,000 years ago.
Salopek is retracing the paths our ancestors took as they left Africa and settled in parts of the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas. As Salopek is walking, he is learning more about himself and all of humankind.

The University of Adelaide employs a full-time staff of fire prevention professionals. They inspect all campus buildings and test and maintain all sprinkler (喷水灭火装置) systems, fire alarms and fire extinguishers (灭火器). They also provide educational programs or fire safety in the residence hall. Whenever you move to a new area, you should locate the fire alarm pull stations and the two exits that are the nearest to your room.
Fire Alarms
The floors of all campus buildings are equipped with manual (手动的) fire alarm systems which include fire alarm pull stations and pipes. Most are also equipped with automatic fire alarm systems consisting of heat detectors, smoke detectors and sprinklers. For your safety, never tamper with (胡乱摆弄) these systems. False fire alarms are illegal and may lead to imprisonment.
Fire Drills
A fire drill will be conducted in your residence hall every semester. During a fire drill, please do the following:
* Take your room key and ID, close and lock the door to your room.
* Exit immediately from the nearest emergency exit. Do not use a lift.
* Meet outside of your residence hall and wait for further instructions.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are located on each floor and in each apartment. Use a fire extinguisher only if you have been trained to do so. Irresponsible use of a fire extinguisher can create a dangerous situation for other residents and could result in damage to personal property.
Misuse of a fire extinguisher will result in fines.
Smoke Detector
A smoke detector is on the ceiling in your room. Some buildings also have heat detectors on the ceilings. Do the following to ensure the safe operation of your smoke detector:
* If your smoke detector is working properly, the red light should be on. If the red light is not blinking, contact residence hall staff immediately.

Teacher: Did you hear that? No? How about this?
Teacher: If you couldn’t hear the first one, it means you’re not a dog! [Laugh.] Dogs can hear very high frequency sounds, but people can’t. And if you could hear the second one, you’re younger than 25.
Student: Wow! Why is that?
Teacher: Our ears change when we get older. Children and young people can hear the second one, but most people older than 25 can’t.
Conversation 2
Teacher: Today’s topic is “Should teenagers date?” Team A, please begin.
Team A: We say no, they shouldn’t. One reason is that teenagers are too young. They should think about schoolwork and spend more time studying
Team B: We don’t agree with Team A. Our answer is Yes. Teenagers can date if they want. It is quite natural for a teenager at that age to feel he or she likes somebody. We think it’s possible for teenagers to date and study at the same time.

Switzerland’s culture is a combination of neighboring states: France, Germany, and Italy. The result is a multilingual country, as eastern Switzerland speaks French, the southern part speaks Italian and the rest speaks German.
Like the language, the cuisine is also quite different by region. If you visit cities like Geneva, you’ll find traditional French dishes like fondue and raclette, melted Swiss cheese served over bread or potatoes. Meanwhile, in German-speaking regions, like Zurich, you’ll find Rosti, a typical side dish made from fried potatoes.
However, if there’s one thing that unites the Swiss and the rest of the world, it’s their love of chocolate. Swiss chocolate factories are “the most luxurious in the world”. US travel blogger Sarah Schmalbruch wrote on Business Insider that famous brands, like Lindt, are based in the country. Visitors to Switzerland can enjoy tasting chocolates, and even take classes from master chocolate makers.
Aside from the wide variety of food on offer, Switzerland also offers thrills. The Swiss Alps offer year-round skiing and mountain climbing with local experts. Besides, you can visit the beautiful Matterhorn, known for its distinctive pyramid shape and snow-capped peak. Standing at a height of more than 4,400 meters, it is the most pictured mountain in the world, according to Smithsonian magazine.
But if city culture is more your thing, you’ll find a large group of museums and art galleries, not to mention the world’s largest teddy bear museum in Basel.
Even the largest Swiss cities tend to be laid back (悠闲自在的), but with many exciting activities and cultural sites, Switzerland is perfect for every taste. After all, where else in Europe offers you the culture of four different countries?

In the paper, researchers exposed 20 volunteers to a light resembling(类似) solar radiation to induce a sunburn(晒伤) on a small piece of skin. They then gave the ''burn victims'' large amounts of vitamin D, and followed up with participants one, two and three days (and a week) later to measure skin redness and thickness. The researchers found that vitamin D decreased inflammation and redness, compared with taking a placebo (安慰剂). And this effect increased in proportion to how much was consume(消费). Vitamin D also appears to increase the activity of a gene(基因)called arginase-1, which is involved in tissue(皮肤组织) repair and healing. Taking 50, 000 international units (IU) of vitamin D-- 125 times the recommended daily allowance——led to a significant reduction in redness and inflammation, compared with the placebo. Those who took 100,000 IU had even less redness and pain; and those who took 200, 000 IU had the greatest reduction in inflammation.
This is the first study to show vitamin D can reduce inflammation, and suggests that it ''could potentially help prevent sunburn, '' says senior author Kurt Lu, a physician scientist and assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University.
It used to be thought vitamin D was primarily involved in building healthy bones and muscles, but recent research has found it has many more roles, including influencing inflammation, such as the kind associated with sunburns.
So, if you get burned, should you take a lot of vitamin D? The study authors don't recommend it. ''I think that's probably not a good idea and not well established by this study, '' says Barbara Gilchrest, a physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Such large amounts, if taken repeatedly, have the potential to do harm to the health.
1. How do the researchers confirm the healing effect of taking vitamin D?A.By observing the inflammation of skin every day. |
B.By measuring the thickness of skin after a week. |
C.By increasing the daily volume of vitamin. |
D.By comparing the effect with that of placebo. |
A.recommend the weekly allowance of Vitamin D. |
B.argue against the benefits of more Vitamin D. |
C.show under the control, the more Vitamin D, the greater benefits. |
D.stress the potential danger of too much Vitamin D. |
A.Repeatedly taking large amounts of Vitamin D might be harmful. |
B.Vitamin D brings less advantages to us than what has been found out. |

You can rent a variety of motorbikes or bikes in Thailand. It seems to be very popular in most of the beaches and islands along the places in the north. The most popular bikes are the little 125 cc Honda Dream which you can get for about 150 baht (铢)a day or as little as 3,000 baht per month, making it the cheapest way to tour Thailand for the people from other countries.
Sometimes you will have to go somewhere by taxi. When you are in cities in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, always remember to get a taxi that is traveling on the roads. Some drivers outside hotels refuse to use the meter (计程表). They will ask a price which is several times the price when they use the meter!
The quality of the roads in Thailand is generally pretty good, so renting cars is another way to get around. The big car rental companies may offer you slightly older cars at a very reasonable price. It is a little surprising considering that the cost of buying a car in Thailand is more than that in the West. Petrol is also reasonably priced in Thailand, more expensive than American prices, but much cheaper than what is paid in Europe. In the past, Bangkok could be a difficult place to drive in—signs were generally in Thai (泰语)only, making it a hard job to find exactly where you were by looking around. But now, the situation is improved. In a lot of places, even the farthest corners of the country, street signs are in both Thai and English.
1. To a foreigner, the cheapest way to get around Thailand is renting a ______.A.car | B.taxi | C.bike | D.motorbike |
A.To take a taxi going on the road. | B.To take a taxi parked outside hotels. |
C.To make sure there is a meter in it. | D.To bargain with the driver over the price. |
A.Because there were too many traffic jams on the roads. |
B.Because there were no signs showing directions. |
C.Because the signs were written only in their own language. |
D.Because the quality of the roads was not good. |

【推荐1】An old saying has it that half of all advertising budgets are wasted — the trouble is, no one knows which half. In the internet age, at least in theory, this fraction can be much reduced. By watching what people search for, click on and say online, companies can aim “behavioral” ads at those most likely to buy.
In the past couple of weeks a quarrel has illustrated the value to advertisers of such fine-grained information: Should advertisers assume that people are happy to be tracked and sent behavioral ads? Or should they have explicit permission?
In December 2010 Americas Federal Trade Commission (TC) proposed adding a “do not track” (DNT) option to internet browsers, so that users could tell advertisers that they did not want to be followed. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Apples Safari both offer DNT; Google’s Chrome is due to do so this year.In February the FTC and the Digital advertising Alliance (DAA) agreed that the industry would get cracking (尽快行动) on responding to DNT requests.
On May 31st Microsoft set off the row.It said that Internet Explorer 10, the version due to appear with Windows & would have DNT as a default (默认值).
Advertisers are horrified.Human nature being what it is, most people stick with default settings. Few switch DNT on now, but if tracking is off it will stay off. Bob Lidice, the chief executive of the Association of National Advertisers, says consumers will be worse off if the industry cannot collect information about their preferences. People will not get fewer ads, he says. “They’ll get less meaningful, less targeted ads.”
It is not yet clear how advertisers will respond. Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop tracking, although some companies have promised to do so. Unable to tell whether someone really objects to behavioral ads or whether they are sticking with Microsoft’s default, some may ignore a DNT signal and press on anyway.
Also unclear is why Microsoft has gone it alone. After all, it has an ad business too, which it says will comply with DNT requests, though it is still working out how. If it is trying to upset Google, which relies almost wholly on advertising, it has chosen an indirect method: There is no guarantee that DNT by default will become the norm.DNT does not seem an obviously huge selling point for Window 8 — though the firm has compared some of its other products favorably with Google’s on that count before.Brendon Lynch, Microsoft’s chief privacy officer, blogged: “We believe consumers should have more control: Could it really be that simple?”
1. It is suggested in Paragraph 1 that “behavioral” ads help advertisers to _________.A.ease competition among themselves | B.lower their operational costs |
C.avoid complaints from consumers | D.provide better online services |
A.online advertisers | B.e-commerce conductors |
C.digital information analysts | D.internet browser developers |
A.may cut the number of junk ads | B.fails to affect the ad industry |
C.will not benefit consumers | D.goes against human nature |
A.DNT may not serve its intended purpose. |
B.Advertisers are willing to implement DNT. |
C.DNT is losing its popularity among consumers. |
D.Advertisers are obliged to offer behavioral ads. |
