Experiments have shown that it can not only sway（使动摇）us with regard to the issue at hand；it can also thaw frozen thinking in general，even in contexts unrelated to the original discussion.

【推荐2】Chinese researchers have developed a robot designed to help doctors treat the new coronavirus and other highly infectious diseases. The machine has a long robotic arm attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. For example, the device can perform ultrasounds (超声波扫描检查), collect fluid samples from a person’s mouth and listen to sounds made by a patient’s organs. Cameras record the robot’s activities, which are controlled remotely so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can operate the machine in another place.

The robot’s main designer Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at China’s Tsinghua University, told Reuters news agency that he got the idea for the device when his medical friend told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that healthcare workers treating patients were getting infected themselves. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation. So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robotic device.

Zheng said the devices use the same technology that is used for space equipment, including moon explorers. The new robot is almost completely automated. It can even disinfect itself after performing actions involving patient contact.

However, Zheng said he had heard from some doctors that it would be better not to build such robots to be fully automatic. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.

The team currently has two robots and both have been tested by doctors at hospitals in Beijing. One machine was taken to Wuhan’s Union Hospital, where doctors there got trained to use it. The plan is to use the robot to help treat coronavirus patients, along with assistance from nurses and other hospital workers.

Zheng would like to build more of the robots, but says money from the university has run out. Each robot costs about $72,000 to make. He says he does not plan to commercialize the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.

About Chinese composer Xian Xinghai, the film is the first coproduction between studios in China and Kazakhstan. The woman in the wheelchair was Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov's niece Kalamkas Arislanova, while the woman at her side was Xian's daughter Xian Nina.

Xian Xinghai was the first Chinese student admitted to the Paris Music Conservatory. A household name in China, he is best known for his Yellow River Cantata,a patriotic (爱国的) work that inspired numerous Chinese during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945). Even though most Chinese people know Xian as one of the greatest musicians in the country, few know that during the early 1940s, the last few years of his life, he got stuck in Kazakhstan while trying to return to China from Russia.

The choice to make the film was inspired by Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University in 2013, according to Shen Jian, executive producer of the film and the CEO of Shinework Pictures, the studio behind the film. During his speech,Xi said that at a time when Xian had no family and was struggling with poverty and sickness,Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov gave him a family.

Throughout his time in Kazakhstan, Baikadamov's niece Kalamkas Arislanova was like a daughter to him. However, when Xian left China, Nina was only 8 months old. Due to the war, the musician was never able to return to his motherland before he died in 1945.

Shen told Global Times that the Nina and Arislanova were very excited about the film as it enabled them to reunite with Xian through the big screen. Nina noted that the film is particularly significant for her, as most films about Xian have focused on describing him as a great musician, while this one is about him as her father.

As shown in the movie, Xian was able to concentrate on music with the generous help of Baikadamov and his family. Inspired by the Kazakh people, Xian created many works during his time in Kazakhstan.

Just as it only takes one book to make a writer a Pulitzer Prize Winner, it only takes one word to change the course of your day. That word is YES!

170 students' task: to get a fully-designed blog up and running, complete with many positions based on a theme of choice--- to food blogs.

The entries were judged on Language proficiency(熟练程度) and the quality of writing, as well as the design and level of exchanging ideas with readers.

Academics from the National University of Singapore and the SIM University, IT experts, and a journalist from Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao in Singapore made up the judges.

In the end, only three Singaporean students make it to the award list---the rest of the awards were swept up by students from China.

"No surprise," said Mr. Chow Yaw Long, 37, teachers-in-charge from Innova Junior College, which organized the event, "Although the topics were local subjects, the foreign students were generally better because of the content of the posts and their grasp of the Chinese language."

One of the three local students winning the first prize in the Best Language Award was blogger Christina Gao, 19, from the Saint Andrew's Junior College, who spared no effors in researching for and writing her blog. Each entry took her between five and seven days to produce, complete with pictures and even podcasts (播客).

Her advice for bloggers is: Be responsible.

"Some bloggers out there only seek to blame the authorities and other bloggers." Said Miss Gao, "I think they lack responsibilities and there is no value to their posts."

Otherwise, the suspect must put up bail（保释金）. At this time, too, the judge will appoint a court layer to defend the suspect if he can’t afford one.

The suspect returns to court a week or two later. A lawyer from the district attorney’s office presents a case against the suspect. This is called a hearing. The attorney may present evidence as well as witnesses. The judge at the hearing then decides whether there is enough reason to hold a trial. If the judge decides that there is sufficient evidence to call for a trial, he or she sets a date for the suspect to appear in court to formally plead guilty（认罪）or not guilty.

At the trial, a jury of 12 people listens to the evidence from both attorneys and hears the testimony of the witnesses. Then the jury goes into a private room to consider the evidence and decide whether the defendant is guilty of the crime. If the jury decides that the defendant is innocent, he goes free. However, if he is convicted, the judge sets a date for the defendant to appear in court again for sentencing. At this time, the judge tells the convicted（宣判有罪的）person what his punishment will be. The judge may sentence him to prison, order him to pay a fine, or place him on probation（缓刑）.

The American justice system is very complex and sometimes operates slowly. However, every step is designed to protect the rights of the people. These individual rights are the basis, or foundation, of the American government.
