Since his students began using Quizlet, the English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning app, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has words set for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.
Thorne teachers at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning apps, Jeff Strack, another English teachers, has also noticed the improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teachers at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile apps to their classes.
Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit(允许) the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use apps, language learner communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.
Thorne believes that apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabularies to Quizlet for others to use. He says some apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-group discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity.” he says.
Many existing learning apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. Some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.

Then in 2020, 1 billion students around the world turned to online learning as the pandemic( 疫情) shut down schools. It was education technology’s big moment, but for many students and families, online learning has been a disappointment. When the world needs it most, why has education technology seemed so lackluster?
Technology education has a long history, but throughout the history there have been two main challenges. The first is that most people depend on human connection to stay motivated. When a student fails to concentrate on what the teacher is saying in a classroom, the teacher can notice it and take action. But when the same thing happens while using an education technology product, no one can see it. Assessments(评价) are also a challenge. Computers can show students standard answers. In some subjects, like maths, education technology can immediately tell whether the answer is right. But if we ask students to write a passage that explains why the Second World War broke out, computers can not assess the answer, part of which may be incorrect.
Education technology has long promised to change education, but for large areas of school learning, we don’t have online tools that are any better than printed books. For most teachers, the road to successful teaching with technology is not a total change to traditional education, but a slow process towards finding a right tool or way that is suitable for students.
1. What’s purpose of paragraph 1?A.To introduce the topic of the following text | B.To show off the great past |
C.To tell the future of education technology | D.To share information of education |
A.encouraging | B.powerful | C.unsatisfying | D.necessary |
A.help students to keep focused | B.teach students communication skill |
C.check the answers of all subjects | D.provide students with correct answers |
A.just look for new advanced tools for education |
B.use technology education based on students’ needs |
C.totally change the traditional teaching way |
D.fight against the popularity of online learning |

• Create a schedule
This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate from your plan.
• Break up your study sessions into smaller periods
Our brain can’t focus effectively for a longtime. If you try to study for several hours once, chances are much higher that you won’t remember all of the information you’re trying to learn.
• Find a study place that works for you
•
This will not only help you check your understanding of the concepts but also identify any area that may need more review. And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on, it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help
If you find that you’re struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you’d like, seek assistance in time.
A.Take relevant tests |
B.Learn to accept failure |
C.There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance |
D.Make sure that every minute you spend studying counts |
E.However, try not to go off-track too often or for too long |
F.Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time |
G.Instead, divide your study sessions up into shorter periods to help you relax and recharge |

·Study in small sessions. Our ability to store the information we take reduces (降低) after around 30 minutes, so you'd better cut your studying sessions into smaller parts.
·Find a study area. Don't study in a place where you sleep!Don't study in your bed, where you play games, or in front of the TV. Why?
·Take good notes.
·
·Read your textbook effectively (有效地). Always use the SQ3R method. You need to survey, question, read, recite (背诵), review to actively remember the information.
A.Train your mind. |
B.Just reading it is not enough. |
C.Be ready to teach what you've learned. |
D.It's a good idea to study in a familiar place. |
E.You can do some fun activities during your breaks. |
F.Find a notetaking method that works best for you. |

Due to environmental conditionsof deserts, mountains and seas, half of the world's population has noaccess to the Internet, and the information deficiencyhamperslocal development.
It will be China's first broadband Internet accesssystem with small satellites hovering in low orbit, whichwill also help meet the needs of commercial space development.
The project, named Hongyun, plans to send the firstsatellite by 2019, and launch four more by 2020. By theend of 2025, CASIC plans to have all of the 156 satellites in operation.
The Hongyun Proiect, which focuses on communication, remote sensing and navigation, can offer communicationand Internet services for China and less-developed 3countries with reduced latency. Meanwhile, the projectcan also benefit emergency communication, sensor data collection and remote control of unmanned equipment.
Currently, international maritime satellites are widely used in communications in mountainous areas and airplanes, but those satellites, 36, 000 kilometers abovethe Earth, have time and signal delay as well as high cost for providing services.
The small satellites sent by the Hongyun Project will hover in low orbits only hundreds of kilometers to 1, 000 kilometers above the Earth, and thus could improve the Internet access. However, the low orbit satellites may face challenges in power supply, as they need more energyto reduce the influence of air-resistance compared to highorbit satellites. Experiments are needed to determinewhether solar energy alone is enough.

Now, video conference tools are essential for our productivity, learning and social interaction. We use them not only for fun, but mainly as a meaningful part of our work.
However, once we start to join endless video calls for a few hours each day, we become very tired. This term is called “zoom fatigue”, and it’s related to overusing virtual communication platforms.
There are some advantages of using video conferencing tools. Without them, it might be impossible for us to work from home. But what we haven’t expected is a price that we need to pay for that sort of convenience.
When we are having a face-to-face conversation with others, everything seems pretty natural. While speaking, you look into the eyes, sometimes slightly moving your stare onto something else. You know when to stop talking and when to speak up. Even if you’re in a conference room with 10 people, you don’t have a terrible feeling of being observed all the time. You notice that people mostly look at the person who is speaking, and then they move their attention onto someone else. But when you use a teleconferencing tool, things are different. Being physically on camera makes you very aware of being watched all the time, because you don’t know who is looking at you. You just see many faces on your screen.
Marissa Shuffler from Clemson University once said, “When you’re on a video conference, you know everybody’s looking at you; you are on stage, so there comes the social pressure—a feeling like you need to perform. Being performative is stressful.”
Moreover, there is another interesting tendency as far as video calls are concerned. Who are you looking at most of the time? The answer is yourself. For most people, it’s hard not to look at their own face if they can see it on the screen. We are likely to make sure that our head is at the right angle and that our shirt isn’t creased.

【推荐1】The climate of any place is the kind of weather it usually has over a long period of time. The houses we live in, the clothes we wear, and the food we eat depend on the climate of the place where we live.
Climate is a pattern (模式) that is not nearly as simple as we think, and it is affected by many factors. For example, the distance to the North or South Pole or to the equator really matters a lot. If you live near either of the poles, you live in a cold climate, for the place where you live does not get as much or as direct sunshine as a place farther away from the poles. In places close to the equator, the climate is very hot, for they are the parts where the sun shines almost straight down.
Whether rain or snow falls makes a great difference to the climate. In hot, dry deserts, little rain falls, but in a hot rainforest, the amount of rainfall is far larger than that in a desert, for there is a heavy rain almost every day, even several times per day. Though a rainforest and a desert may be the same distance from the equator, their climates are rather different from each other. How much rain or snow falls is considered by some to be determined by the winds, the surrounding mountains and the currents (水流) in nearby seas and so on. In short, it is a very complex natural phenomenon (现象).

To preserve Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what was the composition of ancient paint or what it was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science-Advances, grains and yeast (酵母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent (用过已废的) grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the proteins in the yolk helped to slow down the oxidation (氧化) of the paint and reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists. They were willing to accept that their work would be preserved for a longer period.
The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can “appreciate what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

These disasters have led to scores of deaths, and there is a growing scientific agreement that destructive wildfires will become more frequent as the planet continues to warm.
The statistics show that casualties, as well as the area of land burned, around the world are increasing year by year. That prompted Kamilaris and his colleagues to build a mobile app that provides personalised evacuation (撤离) routes to anyone caught in the path of a wildfire.
The app connects over mobile networks to a web server running a fire simulation (模拟) program, which uses publicly available data on geography, weather and vegetation type to predict the spread of fires at 15-minute intervals.
A fire management tool similar to those already in use lets local fire departments quickly tag when and where a fire starts, which is then used to generate real-time simulations. The app then takes the GPS location of each user to work out potential routes, selecting the best by weighing up how quickly each route gets them to safety against how close it takes them to the fire’s path.
The best option is then displayed either as turn-by-turn directions or as a route overlaid on a map of the area similar to those used by popular maps apps.
In a small pilot program at the Athalassa National Forest Park in Cyprus, all 17 people who took part successfully escaped a simulated fire. In questionnaires they answered after the trial, the participants said the app was easy to use and that they would use it in a real wildfire.
But Ed Galea, a fire safety expert, worries that the route-planning algorithm (运算法则 ) in the study is too simple to deal with the complexities of a real-world evacuation, such as varying travel speeds or potential congestion on escape routes.
And while fire and evacuation models can help experts plan or respond to emergencies, he thinks even state-of-the-art systems have limitations that currently make them unsafe in the hands of untrained people.
“That is not to say that the goal of having a personalised wildfire evacuation guidance system is not achievable” he says. “Just not today.”
Kamilaris admits the app still needs work and says the researchers plan to add features, like the ability to tailor travel speed and monitor users to prevent congestion, before testing again in more challenging situations.

But movies make us look inside ourselves and, often, can be used as inspiration themselves. So, without further ado(废话), here are our Top 3 Motivational Movies for students:
Dead Poets Society (1989)
Robin Williams is on top form as the iconoclastic(打破旧习的) John Keating, the unconventional English teacher who uses his love of poetry and classic literature to break down barriers at the oppressive Welton Academy. Keating inspires his students to “seize the day” rather than just wasting hours, challenge the school’s strict rules, and truly be themselves.
The film is packed with emotionally-charged, touching scenes; but the one that won’t fail to make the hairs on your arm stand up is this one where Keating’s students demonstrate what he means to them – “Oh Captain, My Captain…”
Forrest Gump (1994)
This classic movie starring Tom Hanks is very motivating. It’s about a man who has low IQ but manages to be part of many important moments in modern history, able to achieve a lot, and even given a Medal of Honor for his bravery. Gump inspires a popular dance for Elvis Presley and even plays ping pong in China. No student should miss out on this movie. Nothing is impossible if you have the will to do it…and a box of chocolates.
The Pursuit of Happiness (2006)
The Pursuit of Happiness is the amazing real-life tale of Chris Gardner who, with the power of hard work and perseverance, takes himself from sleeping on the subway all the way to the millionaire founder of his own brokerage house.
Never missing an opportunity and studying hard, after a few years, Chris works his way up the career ladder from medical equipment salesman to financial hotshot. If there’s one story that demonstrates that you should never give up, no matter how bad things get, it’s Chris’.

Genetics (遗传学) is the science of what makes you who you are. People who study genetics, called geneticists, learn about how parents pass on information through their genes (bits of information in your body that you cannot see) to their children. Is there anyone in the world like you? No! Your eye color, how tall you are and the size of your nose all come from the special information in your genes that makes you different from everyone else.
We get our genes from our parents. So genetics explains why you might look similar to your mother or brother and why you like some of the same things or speak in a similar way. Genes come in pairs-you get half from your mother and half from your father. We know that some genes are stronger than others. For example, the gene for brown eyes is stronger than the gene for blue eyes. So does it mean that if your parents both have brown eyes that you do too? Not always.
Because genes come in pairs, it's possible that someone with brown eyes has the gene for both brown eyes(B) and blue eyes (b). Look at the picture on the right that shows how the genes from Mum and Dad might be passed on to their children.
Why is genetics important? It's fun to think about which family members you are similar to and which genes you have, but studying genetics is also very important for our health. Some diseases are in our genes, so studying genetics can help us know if we might become ill in the future. It also helps doctors and scientists to know what medicine might help that disease.

B.What geneticists learn about. |
C.How the size of your nose comes from. |
D.How parents pass on information to their children. |

A.Our genes come in pairs. |
B.Some genes are longer than others. |
C.People get their genes mainly from their mothers. |

A.Because it is very funny. | B.Because it is useful for scientists. |
C.Because it can help us fight diseases. | D.Because it can help us make medicine. |
