March 24th Saturday We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok (曼谷). This is our first trip to Thailand. All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North. |
March 27th Tuesday Bangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai. |
March 30th Friday Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life-no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year. |

Beyond the cottage windows the world is white and still. Snow-covered mountains stretch to the sea. It’s only 2 p.m., but already the light is fading, bathing the scene in a mysterious blue.
We rented a riverside house in the tiny fishing village of Oldervik.
Exciting activities, such as dog sledding and reindeer adventures, are easy to arrange.
At Oldervik, it’s possible to catch the aurora anytime from September to April. The best time is from mid-November to mid-January, when the sun never appears. With cloudy skies we have no luck so far but on our last night, at the first sign of clouds clearing, we got into the car and hadn’t driven far when, with great excitement, we spotted a strange glowing arc (弧形) crossing the road like a milky rainbow.
And then it begins: beams of greeny-white light dance as if from spotlights on the ground. To the naked eye (肉眼), the lights are not the bright greens and blues cameras capture on long exposures, but it’s fascinating none the less. The temperature during this time has fallen to –10℃ but we don’t feel it as we lie on the ground, gazing up and never wanting to leave.
A.Sleep is effortless in this quiet land. |
B.So are northern light excursions. |
C.There’s little light pollution here, but the night is cloudy and a little cold. |
D.When we hike south along the river, the moon hangs above the peaks in the sky. |
E.It’s the appeal of the Arctic winter that has brought me to the very north of Norway in January. |
F.The stars are against the blackest of skies, with white mountains on both sides glowing under a small piece of the moon. |

After briefing us on the kitchen's facilities and the whereabouts of the bedroom and bathroom, our hostess Geraldine resumed her ironing work, which seemed to have been interrupted by our arrival.
She was ironing what looked like security guard uniforms, and we soon found out that she worked in a local prison. And when she detected the curiosity in our tones, she offered a tour at the prison in her SUV. My friend and I exchanged a “this is incredible” look and said “yes” immediately.
As we drove, she told us about the buildings that we were passing, the local market and how to get to MONA, Tasmania's well-known contemporary art gallery.
And of course we got to hear some background information about the prison. According to our hostess, it currently holds Martin Bryant, a notorious criminal who cheated 35 people out of their property. We could see the high level of security from the layers upon layers of wires surrounding the gray structure inside.
Getting to know a city in such a local way is something I would never be able to do by talking to a hotel receptionist, and this is what I like best about the apartment-sharing experience, not to mention the fact that it's usually cheaper than hotel rooms.
But I'm fully aware of the risks of Airbnb, which is why I did my homework before booking online—I checked the reviews of the accommodation to avoid possible safety problems.
That said, it is the mutual trust between a host and a guest that fascinates me—the interesting feeling of building a bond with a total stranger.

Phileas Fogg stared at rough sea with his habitual calm. He never changed his expression for an instant, though a delay (延迟) of twenty hours, by making him too late for the Yokohama boat—Carnatic. But this man showed neither impatience nor anger, it seemed as if the storm were a part of his programme.
Fix, a detective who had been searching for a bank robber (抢劫犯), viewed the state of things differently. The storm greatly pleased him. Each delay filled him with hope that Fogg had to spend some days in Hong Kong. The weather helped him. Though he felt sea-sick, his spirit was full of great happiness.
Passepartout. Mr. Fogg’s servant, was angry beyond expression about the bad weather. Everything had gone so well till now! Did the bad things come? Passepartout was very worried about his master's bet. He wanted to know exactly how long the storm was going to last. The sailors advised him to refer to the barometer( 晴雨表). He shook it, but with no effect It seemed to have no desire to rise.
On the 4th. the sea became calm. Passepartout cheered up! The sails were spread, and the Rangoon sailed at her full speed. The time lost could not, however, be gained again. Carnatic would, of course, be missed.

“Do you know when a ship will leave for Yokohama?”
“At high tide tomorrow morning, ”answered the pilot
“What is the ship's name?”
“The‘Carnatic’”.

When I was younger, I used to watch my mum get ready for work in the morning, tracing the line of her lashes with eyeliner, putting on blouses and heels. She said that she liked how it made her feel. I saw her as somebody who would always be there to protect me, who was capable of anything.
The phone call in question was one that she had been waiting on for a few weeks: the final diagnosis of her breast cancer.
The process of treatment was slow and hellish. After the treatment, all her hair thinned, and she wore false eyelashes some days and penciled in the gaps in her eyebrows. My mother, who would never take naps or sleep past eight in the morning, was suddenly so exhausted by being awake that she would sometimes stay in bed for the whole day. Actually after the surgery, she felt too painful and weak to lift a gallon of milk.
She once asked me if I was glad to be aware of her illness. I spent the majority of the year of her treatment worrying but I told my mother that I was glad to have had the privilege of worrying.
Before my 13th birthday, I’d always considered a birthday to have fun and the joy of becoming a year older. Seeing my mom for the first time after surgery was the end of that. That isn’t to say that she had changed fundamentally; my mother was still beautiful and kind and incredibly strong, but the person that she was no longer tied to my ideas of her.
Growing up and beginning to see your parents as people are inseparable processes. That birthday was the turning point of a year that forced me to begin to see my mother as a person, someone whole and real.

Even as a child, I was always goal-centered and loved the feeling of accomplishing things, and every January 1st, I would sit down and write out my resolutions (目标) for the upcoming year. And what resolutions they were! I always picked big goals, like: In the New Year, I will lose 50 pounds! And run a marathon! And study scripture (圣经) every day!
The problem? I’d start out strong, but by February or March, I’d be out of willpower and I’d slide quietly back into my old habits. Every winter, I’d feel guilty and ashamed, looking back at all of the amazing things... I think one of my biggest problems with New Years resolutions was wanting to “dream big” but not having the skills and ability to do those things.
Now I take the opposite approach I’m all about the little goals. First, little goals are easy to set. Instead of saying I’m going to run a marathon, I’ve decided I’m going to run 20 minutes three days a week. Second, little goals are easier to accomplish. Every time I check one of my mini goals off my list, I feel a burst of pride and accomplishment. It’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to wait until the end of the year to enjoy it!
The other great thing about making small goals instead of resolutions is that you can build small goals on top of each other, adding the achievements together. For instance, recently I decided to make sure I ate five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. After a few months, this became a solid habit.
1. Why did the author feel guilty and ashamed?A.Because she picked big goals as her resolutions. |
B.Because she failed to accomplish her resolutions. |
C.Because she was looking back at the amazing things. |
D.Because she loved the feeling of accomplishing things. |
A.She put all of her goals together. |
B.She checked mini goals off her list. |
C.She set small goals instead of big ones. |
D.She didn’t make resolutions any more. |
A.Small goals are easy to set. |
B.Making resolutions is not reasonable. |
C.Eating fruits and vegetable is a good habit. |
D.Small goal can contribute to big achievements. |
A.Setting Small Goals Not Big Ones | B.Combining Big and Small Goals |

The researchers said previous theories about how we appreciate music were based on the physical functions of sound, the ear itself and a born ability to hear harmony.
The study shows that musical harmony can be learned, and it is a matter of training the brain to hear the sounds. So if you thought that the music of some foreign culture (or Jazz) sounded like the crying of cats, it’s simply because you haven’t learned to listen by their rules.
The researchers used 66 volunteers with a range of musical training and tested their ability to hear combinations of notes (音符) to determine if they found the combinations familiar or pleasing. They found that people needed to be familiar with combinations of notes. If they found the notes unfamiliar they also found the sound unpleasant. This finding put an end to centuries of theories claiming that physical functions of the ear determine what we find attractive.
The study found that trained musicians were much more sensitive to unpleasant notes than non-musicians. When they couldn’t find the note, the musicians reported that the sounds were unpleasant, while non-musicians were much less sensitive. This shows the importance of training or nurturing (培养) the brain to like particular sound of combinations of notes, like those found in jazz or rock.
Depending on their training, a strange chord (和弦) sound was pleasant to some musicians, but very unpleasant to others. This showed us that even the ability to hear a musical note is learned.
To confirm this finding, they trained 19 non-musicians to find the notes of a random selection of western chords. Not only did the participants’ ability to hear notes improve rapidly, afterward they reported that the chords they had learned sounded more pleasant — regardless of how the chords were played.
The question of why some combinations of musical notes are heard as pleasant or unpleasant has long been debated.
We have shown in this study that for music, beauty is in the brain of the beholder (观看者)”, a researcher said.
1. According to the study, people find foreign music quite unpleasant because .A.they hear the music much too often | B.they don’t like the person playing it |
C.they have no idea about how to listen | D.they have no born musical ability at all |
A.be trained to like particular music | B.make friends with real musicians |
C.find the beauty of chords without training | D.enjoy the beauty of music when played by musicians |
A.the brain likes particular combinations of notes |
B.not a strange note was pleasant to all musicians |
C.how the chords were played was very important |
D.people’s ability to hear a musical note can be learned. |
A.Love of musical harmony can’t be taught. | B.Love of music is not natural but nurtured. |
C.Listening to music can improve your brain. | D.You can be a musician without being trained. |

Facilities like electric rice cookers, microwaves, and electric kettles, make it easy for people to keep food warm and enjoy a comfortable winter. So how did Chinese people in ancient times keep food warm in winter without these? In fact, ancient Chinese people used their own methods of heat preservation as early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
● “Wen Ding”, ancient rice cooker
One of the major functions of an electric rice cooker is to keep food warm. The “Wen Ding”, an ancient cooking container, served the same purpose, but instead of using electric energy, the ancient cooking container preserved heart by burning fuels like charcoal(木炭).
● “Ran Lu”, ancient small hot pot
The “Ran LU” is a small size cooking vessel(器皿) made of bronze, which can be divided into three parts. A charcoal stove forms the main structure, with a bottom tray to hold charcoal ashes, and a movable cup at the top. Some experts have concluded that the vessel’s structure suggests it may have been used as a small hot pot and that these vessels became popular in the Warring States Period(475—221 BC)
●“Bronze You”, ancient kettle
The Bronze You was one of the most common wine containers during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The Bronze You can also be used to warm wine. For example, the Bronze You with beast mask design, unearthed in Jiangxi province, has an opening where charcoals could be placed. Just as people today can’t do without an electric kettle, the Bronze You allowed people to enjoy a hot drink.
●“Bronze Yan”, ancient steamer
Although the “Wen Ding” was effective at keeping food warm, the ancient Chinese people later found that its burning produced pollution. As a result, the “Bronze Yan ”was made with a two-tier structure and used to steam rice and other grains. After the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-AD 220), further improvements to the“Bronze Yan” led to the modern-day steamer.
1. When did the “Ran Lu” become popular?A.In the Zhou Dynasty. | B.In the Warring States Period. |
C.In the Eastern Han dynasty. | D.In the Stone Age. |
A.place charcoal | B.pour water | C.store wine | D.hold charcoal ashes |
A.It is warm. | B.It is convenient. | C.It is environment-friendly. | D.It is useful. |
【推荐3】Basic to any understanding of Canada in 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s impressive population growth. In September 1966 Canada’s population passed the 20 million mark. Most of this growth came from natural increase. The depression of the 1930’s and the war had held back marriages and the catching - up process began after 1945. The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950’s, producing a population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from 1951 to 1956. Undoubtedly, the good economic conditions of the 1950’s supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived (源自) from a trend toward earlier marriages and an increase in the average size of families. In 1957 the Canadian birth rate stood at 28 per thousand, one of the highest in the world.
After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline. It continued falling until in 1966 it stood at the lowest level in 25 years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian society. Young people were staying at school longer, more women were working, young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before starting families, rising living standards were cutting down the size of families. It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Although the growth in Canada’s population had slowed down by 1966 (the increase in the first half of the 1960’s was only nine percent), another large population wave was coming over the horizon. It would be composed of the children who were born during the period of the high birth rate before 1957.
1. From paragraph 1 we know that in Canada during the 1950 ________.A.Fewer people married. | B.The birth rate was very high. |
C.Economic conditions were poor. | D.The population decreased rapidly. |
A.Couples buying houses. | B.Better standards of living. |
C.People getting married earlier. | D.People being better educated. |

C.The first half of the 1960’s. | D.Population’s slowing down. |
A.Educational changes in Canadian society. |
