You probably have a first-aid kit at home for your family-but what about your family pets? You need to be ready if your furry friend faces an emergency at home. What's more, as the weather gets warmer, more pet owners take their pets with them when they leave the house-on vacation, to the park, jogging, hiking and even swimming. That can be fun for you and your pet, but there's a chance that your pet will get hurt there, as well. So, it's important to know some of the basics of first aid for your pet if necessary.
If your pet is exposed to long periods of heat and sunlight, she will be easy to get heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Signs of heat exhaustion are breathless, anxiousness, dry gums and red skin most easily seen on the ears.
If either of these occurs, cool the pet right away and, as always, get her to the vet. Put the animal in a shaded or air-conditioned area, and wet the body with cool water. Rubbing isopropyl alcohol on the belly and fanning the area will help drive away the heat. If a pet is suffering from heatstroke, don't try to give her water. Get her to the vet immediately.
If you see an animal that's been hit by a car, or you hit one accidentally, first be cautious of all oncoming traffic before trying to reach the animal. Approach carefully. Even a severely injured animal can bite you.
As someone helps with directing traffic, cover the animal with a blanket or towel. If the animal cannot stand on her own, there's a good chance that there are neck, back or head injuries, so try to gently transfer the animal to a flat surface. Then transport that flat surface to the nearest vet. Picking up or hand-carrying the animal may worsen the injuries.

C.Make her drink some alcohol. | D.Bring her to her vet at once. |

Adjust your screen to suit your need. Whenever you can, adjust the brightness and contrast of your screen. The lower the light and the lower the contrast, the less damage it will cause to your eyes. Whenever you can, turn on the dark mode in applications that allow it when it's dark, or you don't have natural light in your environment.
Rest your eyes. Experts recommend applying the so-called 20-20-20 rule: look away from your screen and at another distance (20 feet or six meters) for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
Remember to blink to wet your eyes. It may sound absurd, but you might even want to set the alarm every few seconds to get used to it. Also, don't hesitate to use artificial tears if you feel that your eyes are dry all the time. Avoid using the screen as much as you can, at least the hour before you go to bed.
Finally, while opinions vary on its usefulness, you may want to consider using screen filters(过滤器) to filter out blue and green rays coming from your device.

Anyone who has seen tomatoes growing in a garden knows that they tend to be huge plants.
After you find the perfect plant, it is time to plant it. In general, plastic or fiberglass pots are best for growing tomatoes. They don’t dry out quickly. While tomatoes love heat, they don’t like being dry.
Any good quality organic potting soil works for tomatoes. Don’t use soil dug directly from the garden.
The trickiest thing about growing tomatoes in a pot is that they are heavy feeders. Every time you water, you wash nutrients out of the soil. So fertilize (施肥) regularly. Once a month is good. But every other week, applying the fertilizer at half-strength is better.
A.It is too heavy for container gardens. |
B.That’s why clay pots are popular. |
C.Instead, use whatever soil you can get. |
D.And dry soil can reduce fruit production. |
E.This provides constant nutrients for the tomato plants. |
F.They require people’s much work to stay manageable. |
G.Tomatoes don’t like being dry, so water them regularly. |

The museum has sought a huge T-rex skeleton (骨架) for many years. Before, it used a model of one. But museum director Kirk Johnson says that was never good enough. “It’s been kind of deeply embarrassing to be the national museum and NOT have a T-rex,” he said. The T-rex display is now the centerpiece of the museum’s newest show, which will be available to the public on July 15.
That T-rex, named Sue, was found in South Dakota. Officials at the museum built a special area for the skeleton. It includes a gift store of all things related to Sue. Sue even has her own Twitter account and a media presentation of her life story.

For the area's many kinds of animals, the busy highway greatly limits their movements. Animals need to move to find food, to find mates and to find new places to live. Crossing I-90 as the road is called is a risky but sometimes necessary act. But soon, animals will have a safer choice.
To help the animals, the state is finishing work on its largest-ever wildlife bridge. The 11-meter-tall, 20-meter-wide bridge begins in the forest. Workers are adding fencing anti-plants to help guide the animals across the bridge. The I-90 bridge is part of a growing number of wildlife crossings across the United States. Some are fences, some are overland bridges, and some are underpasses. They all aim to keep drivers and animals away from each other.
A U.S. Transportation Department study found crashes between animals and humans rose year by year. The accidents made up about 5 percent of all crashes nationally, and cost the economy about $8 billion. Such costs come from car repaid, emergency room visits and removal of the dead animals on roads. Collisions between animals and drivers are rarely deadly to people. But they are often deadly to wildlife. The study also found that 21 endangered or threatened species in the U.S. are affected by vehicle hits.
Patty Garvey Darda of the U. S. Forest Service says the $6-million bridge will one day pay for itself because the highway will not have to be fully or partly closed each time a large animal is struck. “If you shut down Interstate 90, you shut down interstate trade.” she adds.

Many companies have moved online because of COVID-19, with work meetings around the world taking place virtually instead of in the office. But a recent study has found that online meetings may affect creative thinking. The study, published in Nature, included 602 people who were divided into random pairs. Each pair was given five minutes to think of creative uses for an item such as a Frisbee, and then one minute to choose the most creative idea.
Some pairs were asked to work together on a video call, while others worked in person. The results showed that the in-person pairs had more ideas than the virtual pairs. However, virtual groups were better at choosing the best idea. The researchers also used eye-tracking technology to see whether focusing on a screen can affect a person’s creativity.
Teams working together virtually spent more time looking directly at each other and remembered less of their surroundings when asked later. The in-person pairs spent more time looking around the room, but also had more ideas.
The researchers did the same study with 1,490 engineers. The pairs were asked to think of new product ideas and choose one as an idea for their company. The results were similar to the first study, with the engineers who met in person thinking of more product ideas, and the virtual pairs making slightly better decisions about which idea to choose.
Study author Melanie Brucks said that while she thinks the future of work is hybrid, the results suggest that businesses should think carefully about which tasks can be done online, and which—like thinking of new ideas—should be done in person.
1. How did the experts get the research results?A.By carrying out questionnaires. |
B.By doing experiments in the lab. |
C.By studying and comparing different groups of participants. |
D.By watching some different virtual videos on the Internet. |

Did you know that the Chinese built the largest canal in the world? Its length of 1,104 miles easily compares with a route linking New York and Florida. Connecting five river systems and four provinces, it ends at Beijing in the North and Hangzhou in the south. For this reason, it is officially called the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
In 486 B.C., the leader of the State of Wu, to transport goods to the northern areas of China, constructed a man-made channel using already existing waterways to link the Yangtze and Huai rivers. It was this channel that laid the foundation for the future longer Grand Canal. More than 1000 years later, Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty had the old canals rebuilt and connected to form what we know today as the Grand Canal.
Then in 1403,Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty transferred his capital from Nanjing to Beijing. In order to feed all those moving North, he had to transport grain from the south along the Grand Canal. To restore the Canal, more than 47,000 men were employed.
The canal soon became the economic lifeline of the empire. Grain was not the only trade goods transported North on the waterways. Salt was another, as well as wine and tea. Goods traded from the North included cotton, wool, coal, flour, precious stones, and dried meat. At times, more than 120,000 soldiers and officers were needed to operate the almost 12,000 ships that annually travelled the Grand Canal.
With the expansion of the railway system in the mid-1800s, the Grand Canal became less and less important to traders. Today, few goods are transported along its waterways. Still, the current South-North Water Transfer Project proves that the Chinese government still sees the Grand Canal important to the welfare of China. The aim of this costly project is to divert huge amounts of water every year from the Yangtze River to the drier regions in the north.
