Adolescents Worldwide Not Sufficiently Physically Active

New WHO-led study says majority of adolescents worldwide are not sufficiently physically active, putting their current and future health at risk.     1     "Urgent policy action to increase physical activity is needed now, particularly to promote and keep up girls' participation in physical activity," says study author Dr Regina Gut-hold, WHO.

The health benefits of a physically active lifestyle during adolescence include improved heart and lungs fitness, bone health and positive effects on weight. There is also growing evidence that physical activity has a positive impact on cognitive development and socializing.     2    .

To achieve these benefits, the WHO recommends for adolescents to do moderate or vigorous physical activity for an hour or more each day. The authors estimated 80 percent of teems do not meet this recommendation by analysing data collected through school-based surveys on physical activity levels.

3     Urgent scaling up is needed of known effective policies and programmes to increase physical activity in adolescents. Multisectoral action is needed to offer opportunities for young people to be active, involving education, urban planning, road safety and others. The highest levels of society, including national, city and local leaders, should promote the importance of physical activity for the health and well-being of all people, including adolescents.

4     Strong political will and action can address the fact that four in every five adolescents do not experience the enjoyment and social, physical, and mental health benefits of regular physical activity. Policy makers and stakeholders should be encouraged to act now for the health of this and future young generations.

A.Current evidence suggests that many of these benefits continue into adulthood.
B.To increase physical activity for adolescents, the authors need to identify the many causes and inequities.
C.The authors say that levels of insufficient physical activity in adolescents continue to be extremely high.
D.To improve levels of physical activity among adolescents, the study provides some recommendation as follows.
E.The authors note that adolescents' participation in physical activity will continue into adulthood.
F.The study highlights that young people have the right to play and should be provided with the opportunities to realize their right to physical and mental health and well-being.

【推荐1】Babies are born yogis. Once we were all able to pull our toes up by our ears and laugh about it. Then we aged, got injured, and began carrying stress in our shoulders and back. In short, we lost our balance.
Yoga(瑜伽) is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union in body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. I was seriously out of balance when I started practicing yoga in 1999. I had plantar fascitis in both feet, and my doctor had warned me against all the things I loved to do: walking, hiking, and playing tennis. I was desperate for exercise. Yoga became my salvation and even enhanced my other fitness activities. I practice yoga at least twice a week, but I consider yoga to be part of my daily life because after a while you no longer just practice yoga—you love it.
Yoga becomes part of your physical life. Your body grows stronger, more toned, and more flexible as you move from one pose to the other. I spent a week in Mexico at a yoga retreat, and it was the first vacation on which I lost weight. “Rather than building muscle, yoga builds muscle tone,” says Shakta Kaur Khalsa, author of the K.I.S.S. Guide to Yoga. “Because yoga helps maintain a balanced metabolism (新陈代谢), it also helps to regulate weight. Additionally, yoga stretches muscles lengthwise, causing fat to be removed around the cells.” I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my computer, I stretch my stiff shoulders and arms. When I need a boost of energy, I do energizing poses. When I am feeling exhausted at the end of the day, I do restorative poses.
Yoga becomes part of your mental life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. This attention to breath is calming; it dissolves stress and anxiety. I use yogic breathing on the tennis courts, in the dentist’s chair, and in traffic jams. You should always leave a yoga practice feeling energized, not tired. If you feel tired after yoga, it means you spent the time “fighting” yourself, trying to force yourself into poses. In yoga, you “surrender” to the pose by letting go of the tension.
Yoga becomes part of your spiritual life. Yoga is practiced by people from all religions; it is not restricted to any religious group. Yoga teaches “right” living in how we deal with ourselves and others. As I work on a difficult pose, I learn patience, forgiveness, and the value of gentleness. Yoga advocates proper eating, but you don’t have to be a vegetarian to practice yoga.

【推荐2】A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds that a fitness tracker (健康追踪器) probably does not help with weight loss.

The trackers are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist (手腕),   where they record a person's heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of people. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health consultation with experts for best weight loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health consultation.

The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic the lead researcher, questioned the use of these trackers for weight loss.

The study involved 470 people age between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese. Over three fourths of them were women. All were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly consulting, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups showed great improvements in fitness, physical activity and diet, with no big difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.

Jakicic said, “The study's findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to deal with America's obesity.”More information is needed, he added, to learn how to best use these trackers to help adults who want to lose weight.

Here's what Thomas Jefferson wrote "Walking is the best exercise.” And Charles Dickens made his point: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”

Are you still sitting there reading? Go walking! Researchers have found out many connections between walking and creative ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking. According to the study, walking outside produced the most novels and the highest quality analogies in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. You've probably heard the phrase “Exercise your creativity”, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative minds is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking.

Our brains work harder to get used to different environments, so walking outside can foster our ability to collect new ideas, and take in new sights, sounds, smells and tastes. Forest bathing is a common form of relaxation and medicine in Japan. Recent studies show that being in the forest and walking among the trees lowers your stress levels. But you don't have to live near a forest to receive the psychological benefits. Research has shown that getting close to nature and keeping media and technology away increase performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking?

1. Why does the author mention Thomas Jefferson and Charles Dickens?
A.To introduce the topic.B.To list some examples.
C.To compare the two great minds.D.To show how successful they were.
2. According to paragraph 2, walking benefits us in___________.
A.healthB.feelingC.happinessD.thinking
3. What does the underlined word "foster" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Damage.B.Judge.C.Develop.D.Save.
4. What can we learn from the text?
A.We must walk outside with our friends.B.We must solve problems while walking.
C.Walking in the forest makes us feel relaxed.D.Walking has the same function as medicine.
