Why do people take “selfies(自拍)?”
Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer that question.
Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software.
The Newhouse School’s Associate Professor Makana Chock worked on the study. She said, posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips, our parents and grandparents used cameras to take photos. Before social media, people would bring back photos to show friends and family. You had no choice but to look at them. If you are a nice person, you commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos.
On social media, it is a different experience. People can decide not to look at photos of their friends and family even if they click “like” or even “love” under the Facebook selfie.
A.That was the old way of “clicking” like. |
B.They came up with some surprising answers. |
C.Different people have different opinions about it. |
D.Such people think very highly of themselves, especially how they look. |
E.Both cameras and phones are useful tools to record people’s experiences. |
F.There are other reasons, besides admiring themselves, why people post selfies. |
G.But men desire to be seen as popular more than women when posting selfies. |

Behind the band, there was a picture of a young man named Philip Hancock shown on the screen. And he was the reason they were all there. Hancock was a 27-ycar-old Australian who taught English in Chongqing. When he died in 2018 due to complications from diabetes, his parents followed his wishes and donated his organs with the help of the Red Cross Society of China’s Chongqing branch.
“I’m Philip’s liver”; “I'm Philip’s kidney”; “Philip’s eyes...”
The five people — a salesperson, a farmer, a former truck driver and two doctors introduced themselves onstage.
“Last year, Red Cross officials told me that Philip’s parents mentioned during an earlier memorial service that he loved music and dreamed of having his own band one day,” said former truck driver Chen Xianjun. Chen instantly wanted to form a hand in memory of Philip, and so did the other four receivers.
Since they had no music experience, they had to start from scratch. From learning the guitar to mastering the maracas (响葫芦) and faking on the drum they took time out of their busy lives to practice over the past year.
“Picking up a new instrument is certainly difficult at my age, but we have a clear goal in mind and are determined to achieve it.” said Mo Li, the 36-year-old real estate salesman.
Peter Hancock, Philip’s father, said after watching the bands performance that his biggest wish was for the five to enjoy their lives more. think Philip not only gave them a new life, but also some musical cells that enable them to appreciate beautiful melodies."

In my journey as an entrepreneur (企业家), one of the best sources of leadership development is parenthood. There’s one thing that being a parent and being a business leader have in common.
Give up control
As a parent, I’ve learned that there’s only so much control you can really have over your kids. They need to make their own decisions — and mistakes — and learn from them. You can try to control your kids when they are young.
Become more flexible (灵活)
We all make mistakes, and it can be tempting to hide those mistakes, especially from people you want to look up to you. But since we teach our kids to admit when they’ve made a mistake and apologize if they hurt someone, it’s important that we do the same when we make a mistake that hurts them.
Become more understanding and empathetic (共情的)
Emotional intelligence is one of the most important skills for effective leadership. And there’s nothing like being a parent to help you better understand people’s emotions and motivations.
A.Admit your mistakes |
B.Kids come with unknown risks |
C.It’s that there’s a lot to be learned |
D.As they grow up, you should let go |
E.You’d better stick to your perfect plan |
F.That can help you develop your empathy |
G.Correct the mistakes as soon as possible |
【推荐2】Asking for or accepting help can bring up a wide range of complicated emotions, like there’s the fear of being seen as needy or weak. Although accepting help from others is difficult, giving and receiving is a necessary part of life.
Sometimes these unnoticed requests are a result of neglect or because parents are too busy to notice. Maybe they were undertaking some jobs to make ends meet or didn’t have additional family support to spare.
How do you get better at accepting help? One way to get better at accepting help is to start with small requests, such as asking for directions.
Helping others feels good. Although asking for help is hard, one way to make it a little easier is to focus on how it feels when you help others.
A.Start small and make it a habit |
B.It can feel like a burden to ask for help |
C.Whatever the cause is, it may affect you |
D.Having needs ignored can make asking for help difficult |
E.We grow up in situations where help comes with duties attached |
F.And remember that the same thing applies when others are helping you |
G.Another way to get better at accepting help is to listen to your internal reactions |

China
Loudspeakers tell people not to shake hands but to make the traditional gongshou gesture(a fist in the opposite palm) to say hello.
France
France is famous for its romantic greetings. They touch each other's cheeks and make a kissing sound. But now, this habit may be coming to a stop. Newspapers in France have begun publishing advice on how to replace kissing on the cheek. French etiquette(礼仪) expert Philippe Lichtfus said that simply looking into a person's eyes can be enough as a greeting.
Spain
The outbreak could also hit one of Spain's most important traditions—in the week before Easter, known as Holy Week, the faithful (信徒) queue up to kiss the hands or feet of sculptures of the Virgin Mary and the saints, seeking their protection. It's said that the ceremony could be banned.
Iran
Traditionally, people in Iran shake hands to greet one another. But today, a video has been popular in Iran, showing three friends meeting, hands in their pockets and two of them wearing masks, tapping their feet against each other as a greeting.

According to a study in the journal Experimental Physiology by Rutgers University researchers, early risers use more fat during both rest and exercise, regardless of their aerobic fitness, compared to night owls. The former are also more active throughout the day, using more fat, while their late-night counterparts tend to store more.
While the two groups had similar body compositions, the early risers were more sensitive to insulin (胰岛素) blood levels and burned more fat during exercise and rest. The study found that night owls used carbohydrates for energy instead of burning fat for fuel.
Dr. Steven Malin, the study’s lead researcher, mentioned that his team had not decoded why these two groups had differing metabolisms (新陈代谢). It could be due to a “mismatch” between their bedtime and natural circadian rhythms (昼夜节律).
Night owls are reported to have a higher rate of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compared to early birds. This could be because they become misaligned (不重合) with their circadian rhythm, especially among adults who work and may have to wake up early, disrupting their natural body clock. This chronic misalignment is often referred to as “social jet lag.”
In addition to health risks, the article pointed out that night owls are more likely to engage in risky behaviors and consume more tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine. They also tend to skip breakfast and consume more food later in the day.
This research adds to the understanding that being a late sleeper has been associated with a higher risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. While some night owls may outperform early birds on certain cognitive tasks, the study highlights the potential health consequences of staying up late. It suggests that morning people may have better metabolic health, even if night owls are more alert during late hours.
1. What can we learn from the new study?A.Night owls are less likely to develop diseases. |
B.Early risers tend to store more fat than night owls. |
C.Night owls are more sensitive to insulin blood levels. |
D.Early risers are more active and burn more fat than night owls. |

【推荐3】It is very common that many students complain they lack concentration. For example ,“I can’t concentrate.” “My mind wanders when I try to study.”
We all have the ability to concentrate. Think of the times when you were attracted to a super novel or the times when you were playing your guitar or piano. But at other times your mind races from one thing to another. Here are some tips.
Rest from time to time. Remember to take short breaks. Lectures are usually 50 minutes long, and that’s about the length of time most people can direct their attention to one task. But that’s just an average. Your concentration time might be shorter (20-35 minutes) or longer (perhaps 90 minutes). When you take a break, you get more oxygen to your brain! When we sit for long periods, blood tends to be pooled in our lower body and legs. Get up and walk around the room for a couple of minutes. As a result, more oxygen is carried to the brain and you can concentrate better.
If you study one subject for a long time, you may find it hard to concentrate. Many students improve their concentration by changing one subject to another every one to two hours. In this way you can pay more attention to something that’s different.
Reward yourself. Give yourself a reward when you’ve completed a task. The task might be small, such as staying with a difficult paper until you’ve finished. But giving yourself a reward can help you be more interested in doing other tasks.
Increase your activity level. Your concentration wanders more easily if you just read an article straight through. Instead, take the heading for each part and turn it into a question. For this part, that would be, “How can I increase my activity level while studying?” Then study that part to answer that question. Do this routinely. The questions give us a focus for each part and increase our involvement (参与).
1. According to Paragraph 3, what’s the purpose of walking around?A.To help us stay fit. |
B.To provide the brain with more oxygen |
C.To benefit our lower body. |
D.To increase our concentration time to 90 minutes. |
A.Study for one hour each time. |
B.Do something difficult. |
C.Change subjects. |
D.Study in different ways. |
A.we just read the heading of some articles |
B.we do our best to read an article straight through |
C.we ask other people questions about the article we are reading |
D.we ask ourselves questions about what we are reading |
A.encourage us to try to concentrate |
B.give us the reasons for a lack of concentration |
C.teach us how to concentrate while studying |
D.list the benefits we can get from concentration |
