Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister. The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal(水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.
“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see. “My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.

“Lion hair! Lion hair! Hahahaha!”
It wasn’t the first time she’d been called Lion hair. Rani’s cheeks burned and tears stung her eyes. She hurriedly jumped off the school bus and landed in a ditch (沟) of muddy rainwater.
As she got back into her house, Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came over, mocked (嘲笑) her hair as a bird’s nest and talked about how many bird eggs there were in it. Ignoring it, her mother was cooking dinner in the kitchen.
Before she could think, Rani had fled out of the house and made her way down a narrow path into a clearing. “I hate my hair!” She screamed as tears of rage and shame streamed down her cheeks.
Before long, she fell asleep because of tiredness.
Rani woke up to Mama’s anxious calls, but she hugged herself close and promised herself not to go home in that Mama let Amit and Sumit make fun of her.
Alone, she felt very hungry and frightened as dusk fell. Suddenly, someone or something was making its way into the clearing. Rani froze. Frightened a lot, she even opened her mouth to scream.
It was Papa. Relief and joy flooded through Rani. She threw her arms around Papa and clung to him.
With an obvious relief, Papa told her that everyone had been looking all over the place for her and urged her to go home. Rani shook her head and cried, telling Papa everything about her damning hair and that she decided to quit the inter-school speech competition on Monday. Scanning Rani’s face, Papa replied that he promised to give those boys and cousins a heavy lesson but fleeing (逃避) was not how they solved problems. Meanwhile, he added that Rani was never one to shy away from a challenge.
With these comforting words and in Papa’s warm arms, she entered home. It’s time for dinner, and Mama’s waiting for them. Rani’s favorite dish! Yummy! The delicious food cooked by mom satisfied and pleased her a lot. After dinner, Rani rested herself next to Papa and began to sleep.

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information. Then I saw the date-1990, and the signature-Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him,” she said and tears began to well up in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, that's mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon.”
“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet.” I said. The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter?” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read.” I replied. He suddenly became excited. “Beatrice? You know where she is? How is she? Please tell me,” he begged. “She's fine. She has been looking for you.” I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her.”
Henry and I took the elevator (电梯) down to Beatrice's room. I walked over to her. “Beatrice,” I said softly, pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. “Do you know the man?”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________At the age of 80, Mia always felt tired and it had nothing to do with her age, though. 16 years ago, her son, Lucas, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.
The accident cast a shadow to the whole family. Lucas’s wife Zoe, still looking after their son Mark, had not recovered from his death, and Lucas’s mom Mia missed her son and often felt hopeless about life.
One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Mia and Zoe were suddenly shocked by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Lucas. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Mia and Zoe exclaimed. “If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的) memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 16 years ago near the Monolith Islands. Authorities now have reasons to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors...”
When the news ended, Zoe called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Lucas and provided details. Zoe also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 16 years since the accident. The attendant said, “16 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”
This attendant then told Lucas that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Lucas went to the city where Mia and Zoe lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.

At the cafeteria table, I overheard my new colleague say, “I hate going home tonight, because we have to get rid of our dog.” I said, “Oh, no! Is your dog ill?” She replied, “No, she’s fine, just not a fit for our family. No one wants her, so it’s best we give it away.”
Coming from a family whose home could be a petting zoo, I was shocked to think that people could be so heartless. Worried by this dog’s fate, I asked my new co-worker a few questions. She shared that the dog’s name was Lady. She was a German Shepherd and had been trained for a year and a half as a guide dog for the blind. Unfortunately, Lady failed her final test because she demanded too many hugs after completing her tasks. I begged the woman to give me a little time to reach out to my mom as we would consider taking her. With my talent for dramatic storytelling and my mom’s compassionate heart, I knew Lady would have a home with us.
After work, I drove to pick up Lady. An old woman greeted me at the door, leading me to the kitchen. There sat the beautiful but very thin dog, sitting in the corner licking and scratching her right paw. “She did that to herself,” the woman said as she pointed to the injured paw. She continued, “That dog is hopeless!” The woman then took a broom and pushed the dog to stand. Lady had tears in her eyes when I led her outside.
There were no goodbyes from this family, just a sense of relief that Lady was no longer their problem. I sat on the sidewalk with her and introduced myself. For me, it was love at first sight. She had perfect markings, a delicate, beautiful face, but the saddest eyes. “Lady,” I said, “I’m taking you to your new home with my family who will always love you. Please give us a chance.”

I’d spent the night rushing to the window every time I heard a branch fall. Now, looking out into the early morning light, not one tree in our rural neighbourhood had been left untouched. Branches lay everywhere. The Great Ice Storm of January 1998 was upon us. What was worse, the ice storm caused a power outage(停电).
Alex and I were searching in the basement with a flashlight, trying to find our camping stove. We needed coffee—some sense of our morning tradition to start the day. I heard a timid knock on the door. Doris Lee, our closest neighbour, had somehow managed to make her way through the ice, wood and downed power lines, to arrive at our door. She looked anxious.
“Have you seen Harold and Prince?”
Our house backs onto a wooded area, and every morning we would watch Doris’s husband Harold with Prince, his golden dog, wander down the tail. Prince trotted (小跑)quietly on the lead and always brought Harold home safely. Harold had been diagnosed with Alzheimer(阿尔茨海默病)the previous summer. Doris had been positive about maintaining their life together and trying to keep things as normal as possible. However, she hadn’t expected an ice storm
“I was upstairs, looking for batteries for the radio, when I heard the door close. Harold is so used to his routine, I just couldn’t stop him from taking Prince out.”
Alex rushed to pull on his coat as he asked, “How long have they been gone?” Doris hesitated. “About half an hour. I didn’t want to bother you, and Prince is usually so good about finding his way home.”
Alex looked at me. I turned to Doris and said, “You go home. I’ll be right over. I’m going to find our camping stove. I’ll bring it over, and we’ll make some coffee while Alex finds Harold. They’ll want a warm drink when they get home.”
Doris turned and headed back to her house while Alex ran across the yard toward the woods. I finally found the stove, and, making my way across the ice, I arrived safely at Doris’s home.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game, which was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway — two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in panic, with their baby, too young to fly, left in place, tiny and delicate.
Hours passed one after another, and night eventually fell. However, with it also came a deep chill and a fear of watchful animals. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we had to help it, and we brought him onto our back yard.
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and neither would they come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we had to give him a name, calling the little guy Peeper, because he would often follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫) noise, nonstop. Besides, we decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.
A year passed and we settled into a routine. Peeper slept on our back yard each night and, in typical goose fashion, used it as a public toilet. My dad would spray off all the goose droppings daily. Part of this ceremony included Dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could flap its wings and flew around the house, and then came back again once the porch was clean.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months.
