There are few things that will come close to the excitements of white-water rafting(激流皮划艇运动); after all, this sport can take a turn for the worse if safety measures are ignored. But if it’s done in place, this can be an adventure like no other.
The White Nile, Uganda
The White Nile flows from the rather calm Lake Victoria, but soon bursts into a major force as it runs through Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Sudan. Rafting on the river, though, is best enjoyed when you’re in Uganda, with rapids touching Class V. And now to the best part --- rafting on the White Nile is permitted all year round except in spring, with nine Class V rapids.
The Colorado River, Arizona
When you’re surrounded by beautiful nature, it's hard to concentrate on the task at hand. But if your attention is attracted by nature, you will be thrown into the water. This stretch of the Colorado River has what is probably the largest Class V rapid in the United States, which attracts rafting enthusiasts worldwide. In late spring, snow melts from the Rocky Mountains bringing in some Class V rapids.
The Zambezi River, Zimbabwe
Africa’s got some big thrills in the Zambezi River. It’s full of big Class V rapids. The Batoka Gorge is where the river turns over 23 rapids, going on for a 15-mile stretch below the Victoria Falls. This is best described as the continent’s most thrilling rafting experience all year round except in spring.
The Tuolumne River, California
The Tuolumne River stretches for a distance of 27 miles, where you can experience some amazing Class V rapids. The river will test your rafting skills as you raft along the course. The best time to be here is in early spring. You can also enjoy the wilderness in Yosemite, a valley in California, America.

Busy work schedules, a lack of motivation and unease towards exercising in public all contribute to the discouraging statistics that only around a quarter of adults exercise enough per week.
This month, enterptiser Trent Ward and designer Yves Behar are uncovering their design for a mirror fitness system, Forme. Forme is reflective like a mirror, uses machine learning to heighten workouts, and offers attachments including ankle belts, rope handles and a heart rate monitor. When not in use, the two arms that form the resistance pulley (滑轮) system fold behind it and the display screen disappears, turning Forme into a simple full—length mirror.
Interest in home exercise has particularly increased recently around the world. Home workout apps have seen a significant uptick in downloads, and trendy brands like Peloton have rolled out free virtual workouts for everyone stuck indoors. One French athlete who was kept away from others chose to run an entire marathon on his 23-foot balcony.
But beyond the new restrictions affecting daily workout routines, Ward and Behar are tapping into the same concerns that have made every home workout appealing:the ability to save time and sweat in the privacy of one’s home. In an age of personal metrics (衡量标准)--where one can measure their heart rate and sleep cycles with smart watches and train for marathons with AI smart sneakers----Ward and Behar want to improve exercise through machine learning. Forme evaluates performance and adjusts weights accordingly. Easy access to one’s own performance data also makes it easier to track that progress and stay motivated.
Though it’s too soon to tell if mirror gyms will be the trend of the late 2010s to 2020s, Behar explained that having a screen in the home can become the basis for more than just fitness, such as shopping or telemedicine.

Good news! As deputy director of the Development and Reform Commission said, consumption can be the main driver of economic growth this year. And he added that the commission has many tools to boost consumer spending. To promote consumption, some classic movies are ready to be re-released. Here is the detailed information.
“Ready Player One”
Perhaps everyone is eager to enter such an Oasis (绿洲) in the future. But even if the virtual world is attractive, we still have to live a happy life in reality.
Directed by Steven Spielberg in 2018, this movie is full of Easter eggs for movie buffs and nostalgia lovers. “If the audience is laughing and you’re not, you’re missing out on a visual tribute (致敬) to a 1980s movie, fictional character, cartoon or game.
The Old Greenbelt Theatre, 129 Centerway, Greenbelt, Md.; Sundays through Jun. 30, 1 p.m. The movie tickets are priced at $20 per adult and $15 per child.

Some wounds are indeed difficult to disappear completely and can only be scaled. The hero is immersed in grief and never manages to recover. Such a story, although it cannot make the audience relax, it has another “release” effect, which will make the audience cherish the happiness in their lives.
Manchester by the Sea is at once hilarious and tragic without ever feeling in conflict with itself, which is the same goes for La La Land.
Library of Congress, Mary Pickford Theater, 101 Independence Ave. SE, Washington D.C.; May. 15 (Mon.), 8p.m.
The movie tickets are priced at $20 per adult and $15 per child. The second child of the group will get the ticket for free.
“Dead Poets Society”
“Finance, engineering, architecture, computing, are important, and of course, those are what we need to survive. But for poetry, romance, love, those are why we are human beings. ”
This is a movie about a teacher and his students, but many people find the true meaning of life in the movie. The teacher, namely the Captain, has awakened their souls of freedom and love from their numb and puppet-like lives, and that is enough, despite the length of life. So, the dream, love, ideal of the teenage years, should be chase bravely. The line “Oh, Captain! my Captain!” is also well-known because of this movie.
Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW, Washington, D.C. opens on May. 25 (Mon.). The movie tickets are priced at $15 per adult and $10 per child. A 10% discount is offered for a second child of the group.

Others say it was a Ugandan who came here first and then brought more of his fishing friends. It was this kind of contradictory stories and the battle over the island’s fish-rich waters that created a conflict over the ownership of Migingo between Kenya and Uganda.
Back in 2009, Migingo has a population of 131, but the number has ballooned to around 1000. Drawn by the large population of Nile perch, fishermen from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania crowded into Migingo. In spite of measures set in place to keep population under control, the place becomes packed to the point where there’s little room to walk in.
What’s really surprising is that just a few meters away lies a much larger and completely uninhabited island called Usingo. It is said that the place is home to a demon (魔鬼), and fishermen are afraid to even set foot on it, let alone live there with their families. But it turns out to be just a rumor online. Locals haven’t even heard about any demons, but they do have a very practical reason.
Despite permanent police presence from both Uganda and Kenya, pirate (海盗) attacks still occur. They are not as frequent and violent as they used to be, but every few months fishermen do run into pirate stealing their catch and boat engines, sometimes even killing them in the process. But there is strength in numbers, so it’s safer for most people to live on Migingo than to risk moving to Usingo.
Migingo remains the world most densely populated island, but it may not hold that title for much longer. Due to over-fishing around the island, the supply of Nile perch is on the decrease, and people are starting to move to other fishing spots.
1. What can we know about Migingo according to the text?A.It belongs to two countries. | B.It has the densest population. |
C.It attracts the most tourists. | D.It is home to brave fishermen. |
A.They may be attacked by pirates. |
B.They can’t get a huge catch of fish. |
C.They believe there live some demons. |
D.They can’t be protected by policemen there. |
A.It will cause more violent conflicts. |
B.It will be a suitable place to live in. |
C.It will be deserted by some fishermen. |
D.It will have the largest population of fish. |

Research has linked secret-keeping to increased anxiety, depression, symptoms of poor health, and even the more rapid progression of disease. There is a seemingly obvious explanation for these harms: Hiding secrets is hard work.
New research, however, suggests that the harm of secrets doesn’t really come from the hiding after all. The real problem with keeping a secret is not that you have to hide it, but that you have to live with it, and think about it.
The concept of secrecy might evoke(唤起) an image of two people in conversation, with one person actively hiding from the other. Yet, such hiding is actually uncommon. It is our tendency to mind-wander to our secrets that seems most harmful to well-being. Simply thinking about a secret can make us feel unreal. Having a secret return to mind, time and time again, can be tiring. When we think of a secret, it can make us feel isolated and alone.
To better understand the harms of secrecy, my colleagues and I first set out to understand what secrets people keep, and how often they keep them. We found that 97 percent of people have at least one secret at any given moment, and people have, on average, 13 secrets. A survey of more than 5,000 people found that common secrets include preferences, desires, issues surrounding relationships, cheating and violations of others’ trust.
Across several studies, we asked participants to assess how frequently they hid their secret during conversations with others, and also how frequently they thought about the secret outside of social communications. We found that the more frequently people simply thought about their secrets, the lower their well-being. The frequency of active hiding when communicating with others, however, had no relationship to well-being.
Following up this research, a new paper shows why thinking about secrets is so harmful. Turning the question around, we examined the consequences of telling secrets. We found that when a person tells a secret to a third party, it does not reduce how often they have to hide the secret from others who are still kept in the dark. Rather, it reduces how often their mind wanders toward the secret in irrelevant moments.

That's the finding of a psychological study building on previous research which found that the wealthy people value the ability to control the outcome of different events compared to lower-income people.
Donations from high earners were 1.5 times larger when researchers tailored(定制)the words of letters requesting financial support to play on this desire.
Experts from Harvard University wrote to 12,000 alumni of an Ivy League business school—who were earning $ 100,000 (£ 80,000) per year or more—asking them to donate to the school. Two sets of letters were sent out—one saying the “community” needed to take action, while the other called on individual action. The letter were phrased respectively as "Sometimes, one community needs to come forward and support a common goal" or "Sometimes, one person needs to come forward and take individual action”.
Respondents to the second letter gave $ 432 (£ 340) on average compared to the $ 270 (£ 215) average from the first group.
New Scientist Ashley Whillans, who led the research, said, "We think that giving high-income earners a sense of control makes them want to give more.”
