Three Films to Watch in October
October is approaching and a new wave of films will be on soon. Here are three breath-taking films recommended by BBC and see which of the following will appeal to you best?
Rebecca (《蝴蝶梦》)
The famous adaption of Rebecca is the Oscar-winning Alfred Hitchcock classic Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. How can Ben Wheatley’s new version possibly compete? Well, one answer is to have Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers, a stroke of casting genius which is enough to justify the film’s existence. Another answer is going back to the book and trying to get closer to the actual story... You think you know it and you just don’t.
On Netflix from 21 October
Possessor
Andrea Riseborough stars as an assassin(刺客) who can control other people’s bodies and get them to do the killing for her. Her latest job is to kill an IT tycoon (Sean Bean) and his daughter (Tuppence Middleton) by possessing the daughter’s future husband (Christopher Abbott). David Ehrlich of IndieWire claimed , “90 minutes of Andrea Riseborough and Chriustopher Abbott engaging in warfare over control of the latter’s body is more satisfying”.
Released on 2 October in the US and 9 October in Canada
Honest Thief
Liam Neeson plays Tom, a retired bank robber who promises to return his ill-gotten gains in exchange for a reduced prison sentence so that he can settle down with the woman he loves (Kate Walsh). But the two FBI agents (Jai Courtney and Anthony Ramos) assigned to fetch the money decide to steal it instead and frame Tom for murder. Unfortunately for them, he is a man with a very particular set of skills, so the explosions, car chases, and shoot-outs all come.
Released on 14 October in France, 15 October in Portugal and 16 October in the US

Practice, practice, practice!
When you are in bed, picture yourself on the stage having a great time. Go through your lines, songs, and dance moves, and picture them going perfectly. The key is to stay relaxed and create a positive image of yourself on the stage.
Don’t be nervous when you are on stage!
It will be dark where the audience is seated, and you won’t be able to see their faces. When you aren’t saying lines, take deep breaths.
Remember to show expression.
Be proud of your performance and display the emotion that your character is feeling.
Smile during the curtain call.
The curtain call is when the audience will take pictures, so wear a smile. Depending on the type of show, you might want to stay in character for a few extra seconds before you break out into a smile. Also, if you have one last song to sing at the end, sing it loud and proud.

【推荐3】While Disney animations are successful in moving their audiences, their subsidiary(子公司)Pixar is expert at creating tear-jerking movies as well.
At first sight, it is remarkable that these movies make us cry—the main characters are cartoon characters, in most cases not even human beings, who do things that could evidently never happen in the real world: toys come to life, monsters are to scare sleeping children, and helium-balloon-powered houses travel the world. How can a story so unrealistic make us care so much about their animated main characters?
The Pixar creators explained that their stories often reflect their own personal lives. Whereas the animated characters are far from real, their lives are relatable. The magical ingredient is the realistic portrayal of the complex emotional lives of the characters.
As Pixar director Pete Doctor explains: “What you’re trying to do, when you tell a story, is to write about an event in your life that made you feel a particular way. And what you’re trying to do, when you tell a story, is to get the audience to have that same feeling. While this is true for storytelling in general, it is especially important in Pixar movies, given that the basic plots of their movies cannot happen in real life.”
What makes Pixar’s highly unrealistic stories believable is the fact that they address problems that are central to our own lives. Pixar addresses real human matters such as family, friendship, death, loss, and the highly realistic emotions that such events evoke in our life.
The effect of the story thus depends on the human capacity to empathize with others: to recognize which emotions others experience, and to understand why others feel how they feel. The fact that empathy is learned and developed through life may well be the reason why these movies are entertaining for kids but rather devastating and heart-crushing for adults.
Every Pixar movie has the moment when we cry. We learn and feel with the characters through the realistic portrayal of their emotional lives. The stories appeal to our deepest emotions and, thus, make us cry. Because, essentially, Pixar stories are about us.
1. Which real issue may not be dealt with in Pixar’s movies?A.Family conflicts. | B.Romantic love. |
C.A political issue. | D.The betrayal of a friend. |
A.The Pixar’s movies are not only entertaining for kids but also heart-breaking for adults. |
B.Pixar can create touching movies because of the support from Disney. |
C.Both the realistic emotions and real human matters are shown vividly in Pixar’s tear-jerking movies. |
D.People can find empathy more easily in animation movies than in any other movies. |

We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap.However,92% of the water used by people goes into growing crops, according to a water researcher Arjen Hoekstra. He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats. These products are shipped around the world.
For example, consider a sugary soft drink.Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170 and 310 liters of water-about 95% is used to grow and process the ingredients. Another 4% goes into the packaging and labeling. In Hoekstra's calculation, when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroad,it exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.
According to Hoekstra's new report, dry countries like Israel and Kuwait, both in the Middle East, get the majority of their virtual water from other countries, through imported products. More surprisingly, some wetter countries, like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, also get the majority of their virtual water from other places. That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.

A cartoon character wearing bright red shorts on video begins instructing us to do star-jumps and sit-ups around his apartment.
Pella, a research assistant at Stockholm University, is part of the Hoffice movement, which invites workers-freelancers(自由职业者)or full-time employees who can do their jobs remotely—to work at each other’s homes to increase productivity and enjoy an active social life.
Those attending Hoffice events advertised on Facebook are typically asked to work silently in 45-minute blocks, before taking short breaks together to exercise, or simply chatting over a coffee. In addition, each participant shares daily objectives with the rest of the group upon arrival, and is invited to report back on whether or not they have achieved them at the end of the day.
“Often when I am alone, I can work focused for a couple of hours but then I’m easily distracted(分心).The help of others makes me so much more disciplined.” says Pella, who attends Hoffice events as both a guest and a host. Lunches mean networking and connecting with new contacts. “People are coming from really different areas and have different professions so there can be really interesting discussions,” he says.
The Hoffice movement has grown quickly since it was founded in 2014 by Swedish psychologist Christofer Franzen, now 37. He had been giving lectures on the benefits of collective(集体的)intelligence, but realised he was spending most of his own time working alone at his kitchen table. “I wanted to test more structured home co-working with friends in similar situations,” he says.
Franzen says that holding events in houses and apartments creates a unique atmosphere, because there’s a sense of community and desire to contribute. He’s looking for ways to expand the social value of Hoffice, by matching up members with relevant skills to share and even encouraging jobseekers to join its gatherings.
