When you need a job very much, you may end up taking one for which you are over qualified. Although you were initially grateful just to have the work, you now feel bored and depressed. Is there any way to change that?
Start by changing your opinion, says Caitlin Kelly, the author of Malled, a book based on her experience as a sales clerk after losing her job in journalism. “Don’t focus on what you’re not getting but what you are getting,” she says. “Be patient and work attentively with a wide range of people. It doesn’t matter what the job is –there are always things you can learn and skills you can develop.”
Hilary Pearl, the founder of a coaching firm, says, “Tell yourself the current situation isn’t the end of your career. Don’t overdramatize(过分夸大)the negative aspects but try to view the situation more philosophically: life has a series of stages, and this is one of them. Don’t forget to study even in the worst stage.”
Consider that because you’re overqualified, you may be able to learn or do things on the job that might not have been possible.
Of course, you may seek tasks and responsibilities that force you to learn something new or to work harder. “You may be operating on autopilot(习惯性地)right now, but chances are that people above you are stressed,” Sarah Hathorn says. “ Take things off your boss’s plate and let him know which projects or tasks you want to learn more about.”
Always express your request positively, saying that you love new challenges, rather than complaining that you’re bored and underused, says Ethun, the president of the Park Avenue Group. In your down time, educate yourself about the company and its industry. “Read corporate information, analyst reports and related news articles,” she says. “If your boss accepts your suggestions, it will make you a more valuable employee.”

Try physical activity
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.
Share your stress
It helps to talk to someone about your anxieties and worries. Perhaps a friend, family member, teacher or even your leader can help you get a better view of what’s troubling you. If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a psychologist or a doctor.
Make time for yourself
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to you as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go shopping or work on a hobby.
Make a list of the things you need to do
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do, and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed.
Go ahead and cry
A.Do what you want to do. |
B.Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy. |
C.Physical exercise will relieve your anxiety and worry and help you to relax. |
D.Knowing who to ask for help is an important step in avoiding serious problems later. |
E.Set out to do the most important tasks first. |
F.A good cry can be a healthy way to bring relief to your anxiety. |
G.Laugh when you want to. |

Choosing water-saving plants
If you are gardening under water restrictions, decide which plants need water least. Older trees, especially fruit, nut, and even evergreens, can suffer during drought, while newly planted trees require regular watering until their roots become established.
Watering effectively
Most plants require an average of 2 to 4 centimeters of water each week under normal conditions. That need could increase, however, during periods of extreme heat, when the soil dries out more quickly.
Consider using recycled household water, also called gray water, to water plants. Unsalted water left over from boiling eggs or vegetables provides extra nutrients. Dish and bath water that is not too oily will not harm plants.
A.Using fresh clean water. |
B.Choosing recycled water. |
C.And melons have deep roots. |
D.Try to water your plants all at once. |
E.Do not water your plants once weekly. |
F.And many of the people have plants to worry about. |
G.And water from washing fruits and vegetables can be used around the garden. |

Thankfully, my parents had raised me to have a lot of confidence. With their help and encouragement, I applied to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. After graduating, I worked for Bell Canada for a while, writing and producing commercials. I soon decided, however, that what I really wanted was to be on camera.
I went to the CBC and CTV and applied for a job. They both turned me down because I didn’t have any experience. Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I found out the president was named Mr. Slaight and called him. I said, “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Tuesday or eleven o’clock on Wednesday for a tour. What would suit you better?” He stuttered a bit, then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but ecstatic.
On the appointed day, I arrived at the studio. When we sat down, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded a little angry and frustrated — but very curious. “All I want is a chance,” I said. “If something on camera comes up at Global — I don’t care what — I want a chance to audition. That’s all I’m asking.”
Three months later, his secretary called and asked me to audition for a new game show. When I arrived at the station, I went right into an audition for a new show called Wintario. The following day, I was handed an airline ticket to Sault Ste. Marie to do the very first Wintario show.
From Wintario, everything happened for me. I hosted the National Santa Claus Parade for fifteen years. I did hundreds of television commercials, a number of movies, training videos, and travel shows. And everything came from finding the courage back in 1975 to make that one phone call.

Why do you pull yourself out of bed every morning to go to work or school? What does it take to make you feel like your contribution in those places is truly worthwhile? Knowing what motivates you can help you find meaning in your work and make efforts to reach your goals.
Psychologists have a wide variety of ways of describing and differentiating motivations because people care about so many different things. Psychologist David McClelland identified three main motivations for people: achievement (the feeling of success), affiliation (close relationships) and power (the ability to influence the world). Authors Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton identified 23 motivations, including creativity, challenge and learning.
Some motivations, such as money, social position and praise, are external; these are the tools bosses typically use to encourage their employees to do better. Other motivations, including fun, personal growth and feeling like one’s work is significant, come from within the person doing the action. These ideals, called internal motivations, tend to be more reliable than external ones because they represent things that can never be taken away.
Since a wide variety of motivations exist, it’s important to understand which ones are persuasive to you. Trying to motivate yourself in a way that doesn’t appeal to you will make it difficult to convince yourself to work. When choosing a career, think about what motivates you and make decisions accordingly. If you are motivated by overcoming challenges, look for a career where you can continually try hard to reach a higher level.
People motivated by external rewards sometimes struggle to meet goals they set for themselves that no one else knows about. They can solve this problem by creating external rewards for their personal goals such as finding a friend to hold them accountable.
When you know what motivates you, you will be able to motivate yourself to do the things necessary to succeed. And if you are a leader, knowing what motivates your team will enable you to help them do the same.
1. Why is it important for people to be clear of their motivations?2. How can the motivations be classified according to McClelland?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Since the external motivations involve money, social position and praise, which are often used as tools by bosses, they are more dependable than the internal ones.
4. Please briefly present what motivates you in your life and how it works. (about 40 words)

That space between happy passengers and unhappy passengers is where Fred Taylor Jr. worked for 15 years in customer relations with Southwest Airlines.
“My job was to say sorry by sending letters to customers whose flights have been put off or stopped,” the 47-year-old said. His daughter Olivia tells her friends he is “the Sorry Man.”
I don’t think I can explain reasonably to you for the delays that happened with your December 1st flight from ...

“A Long Walk Home”-----life as Eli Reed saw it
American photographer and photojournalist Eli Reed has been documenting “life as I saw it” for more than 40 years. His career retrospective(回顾), “Eli Reed: A Long Walk Home”, is an extraordinary search of beauty while recording hardship. With a heart of love, Reed uses a style that uncovers humanity at every turn. According to Reed, “A Long Walk Home” is about what it means to be a human being. It all began with a photo he took of his mother and his memory of her smile.
Raised in New Jersey, Reed was originally a painter. Primarily self-taught in photography, he became a freelance photographer in 1970. After producing some impressive photos that drew much attention, he joined the famous company Magnum Photos---the first black photographer invited to do so.
His photos are remarkable in their lack of judgment of the people or the situations he comes across. In Beirut, Lebanon, a man removes a tree branch from a car in a recently bombed parking lot. An old man wrapped in a sheet plays a drum in front of a sign reading “God Is the Way” while National Guardsmen lift their guns during a war in Miami. A young boy upside down with his legs in the air in a Kenyan refugee camp, his determined look faces the camera. In Harlem, New York, a group of laughing children take over an abandoned car, using it as a jungle gym.
When another photographer might have focused on the sobriety of these situations, Reed’s camera smiles. His images show how humans cope, rise above, and carry on. This is what gives “A Long Walk Home” its power. Considering the places Reed has been to, there are very few photos of guns or obvious violence. Instead, Reed focuses on the varied human responses to hardship.
We smile along with Reed in a gesture of compassion and solidarity. We recognize our fellow human beings.

"Technically, I think what they’re proposing is possible," physicist Daniel Bonn said.
People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And there’s no obvious answer. On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away.
The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds (滑板). Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have lubricated the paths either with wet day or with the fat from cattle. Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand.
Evidence from the sand supports this idea. Researchers found small amounts of fat, as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths.
However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way, who led the new study. West said, "I was inspired while watching a television program showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction. I thought, ‘Why don’t they just try rolling the things?’" A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides, he realized. That, he notes, should make a block of stone "a lot easier to roll than a square".
So he tried it.
He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground.
They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery (滑的) path.
West hasn’t tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn’t have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.
1. It’s widely believed that the stone blocks were moved to the pyramid site by .A.rolling them on roads | B.pushing them over the sand |
C.sliding them on smooth paths | D.dragging them on some poles |
A.made the paths wet | B.made the paths hard |
C.made the paths wide | D.made the paths slippery |
A.Rolling the blocks with poles attached. |
B.Rolling the blocks on wooden wheels. |
C.Rolling poles to move the blocks. |
D.Rolling the blocks with fat. |
A.Because more force is needed for sliding. |
B.Because rolling work can be done by fewer cattle. |
C.Because sliding on smooth roads is more dangerous. |
D.Because less preparation on paths is needed for rolling. |
Some people dig holes in the ground that serve as individual toilets. However, micro-organisms from human wastes can reach water supplies and cause cholera or other diseases.
A United Nations team is now developing a toilet for disaster areas. The experimental project is called eSOS—for the Emergency Sanitation Operation System. The system is lightweight and operates on sunlight power.
Scientists are working on the toilet at the UN’s Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands. Damir Brdjanovic is heading the project. He says his team hopes to bring disaster assistance into the 21st century.
The eSOS system has several ‘smart’ features, such as a self-contained energy supply unit. Another is a global positioning system sensor, very much like the GPS equipment in some vehicles. There is also equipment that measures waste buildup. All of the information from the toilet system can be shared with an emergency organization center. Officials at the center can then identify the needs of an affected disaster area. The eSOS system can also recycle liquid wastes into water that can be used for farming. This involves treating the urine(尿液)with the help of a membrane bioreactor system(膜生物反应器系统).
The smart toilet is being tested. Damir Brdjanovic and his team plan to test the toilet at a refugee camp in the Philippines later this year. The developers hope this disaster relief will save the lives of many refugees.

When I studied African wild dogs, I saw that each pack consists mainly of grown brothers and their father and uncles. Usually, one unrelated female lives with them. If a dog gets lost, it makes its special “hogcall”, and the others answer. Warthogs also live in families. A common group would be an old mother, her grown daughters, and these daughters' grown daughters with their babies. If these warthogs become separated, they look for one another.
But some other plant eaters seem to have almost no family ties. For example, caribou live in huge herds of hundreds or even thousands of animals. Except for each mother and her baby, these animals do not appear to remember one another. If some of them get lost, the others do not seem to miss them.
An animal can be in great danger if it has no family to help fight off predators (捕食性动物). I once saw a rooster try to defend his chicks from a snake. He was killed by the snake. The wildebeest, which lives in a herd, is on its own when predators strike. That is because a wildebeest herd, like a caribou herd, is just a crowd of unrelated animals that do not know or care about one another. Many times I saw wildebeest mothers standing alone, trying to protect their babies from wild dogs. But in the end, each mother had to flee for her own life.
However, a big family is sometimes a nuisance (麻烦事). The little dikdik is a tiny antelope that lives in Africa. It has a diet of rare plants and is limited to a small home range. The dikdik would not find enough to eat if there were too many relatives around. The female leopard, too, lives alone all her life, except while she's raising cubs (幼崽). She usually hunts small animals, which are just big enough to feed her and her cubs, but nobody else.

The study looked into 50,000 children from 20 countries. Parents were asked about their children’s eating habits and whether they had ever suffered from asthma. The effects of their diet seemed to be different depending on where they lived. Fruit and vegetables are more helpful in less rich parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries. Eating at least three hamburgers a week was linked to a greater risk of asthma, but only in wealthier countries.
Dr. Gabriele Nagel said different things may cause asthma in different parts of the world. “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects different people, and its effects in developing as well as developed countries,” she said.
High levels of unhealthy fat in hamburgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the researchers said children who ate several hamburgers a week might have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well.
Researchers said the study helped us understand how asthma and diets are connected. “Previous (先前的) studies have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child’s risk of developing asthma symptoms (症状),” Dr. Elaine Vickers said. “Our advice to parents is to make sure that children have a healthy diet and also get plenty of exercise.”
