Mr. Black was spending his holiday in Africa. One day he watched some elephants passing by. Each of them was tied to his front legs only by a small rope. To his great surprise, these large strong animals could easily run away, but they did not.
So Mr. Black asked the owner why not a single elephant made an attempt to break free. The owner said, ''When the elephants were very young, the same size ropes were used to tie them, and at that time the ropes were strong enough to hold them. Now they have grown big and strong, but they believe that the ropes still hold them and it is impossible to escape, so they never try to get away. ''
Sometimes people act like these elephants. They often give up after the first failures. In fact, the failures are part of learning. If we want to succeed, we should never give up, but try and try again.

The two countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2020. On this occasion, they decided to set up the “Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism”, a year full of events and activities aimed at boosting cooperation, traveling, and people-to-people exchange.
The opening event was held in January 2020. Due to the pandemic outbreak and the consequent travel bans, tourism and cultural exchanges were brought to a standstill and the events designed to promote exchange and tourism did not take place. However, these events have been rescheduled and will be held in 2022. The year of tourism and culture “remains a demonstration of the common intention to maintain an important people-to-people exchange between two of the world’s most important civilizations”.
In terms of tourism, the two countries show positive bilateral trends. There are several examples of twin towns between Italy and China. The three oldest pairs are Milan-Shanghai (established in1979), Florence-Nanjing (1980), and Venice-Suzhou (1980). Normally the pairings are made according to the existing similarities between the cities. Milan and Shanghai are respectively Italy’s and China’s fashion capitals and economic hubs. Florence and Nanjing were both capitals in ancient times and are filled with scenic spots and ancient buildings. Finally, Suzhou’s ancient part is characterized by canals, bridges, and narrow streets that remind of Venice’s structure, to such an extent that this East-China metropolis was nicknamed “The Venice of the East”. This kind of relation between cities is important to encourage cooperation in various sectors (education, tourism, culture, etc.) and to promote people-to-people exchange.
The touristic sector is an important one to cherish: It not only gives work to many people, but also plays a role in raising mutual understanding and familiarity between different countries. As stressed by an author, “The more Chinese tourists come to Italy and the more Italians travel to China, the closer the two countries become on a human level.”

Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldPrelude is one of Katherine Mansfield's longest and finest short stories. Because Prelude is a modernist short story, the emphasis is on characters rather than plots. Mansfield is using the Burnells’ house-move, and the period when they are busy settling into their new home, as a situation to observe family, women and class.
He, by Katherine Anne PorterKatherine Anne Porter (1890-1980) wrote just one novel and fewer than thirty short stories, yet she is regarded as an important twentieth-century American writer, with He among her most celebrated and critically praised works. An important theme of Porter’s work is the search for meaning in a modern and increasingly materialist world.
Signs and Symbols, by Vladimir NabokovIt is a short story by the Russian-American author Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), originally published in the New Yorker in 1948. The story centers on an elderly married Russian couple who move to the United States; their son is suffering from paranoid delusions (妄想症) and has been limited to a care center. Signs and Symbols focuses on the couple’s attempt to visit their son and its result.
Down at the Dinghy, by J. D. SalingerThis short story was originally published in 1949. It involves an adult speaking to a child. It is about a young boy who runs from home and goes down to the nearby lake, where he gets into a boat and refuses to speak to his mother. The story ends with the mother bonding with her son.

The Spy and the Traitor
The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War
by Ben Macintyre
This nonfiction account focuses on Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB officer who became a double agent for the British, and Aldrich Ames, the American turncoat(叛徒) who likely betrayed him, Macintyre’s retelling of their stories comes not only from Western sources (including Gordievsky himself) but also from the Russian perspective. It’s every bit as exciting as my favorite spy novels.
Range
Why Generalists Triumph(获得成功) in a Specialized World
by David Epstein
I started following Epstein’s work after watching his fantastic 2014 TED talk on sports performance. In this fascinating book, he argues that although the world seems to demand more and more specialization, what we actually need is more people “who start broad and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives while they progress”. I think his ideas even help explain some of Microsoft’s success, because we hired people who had a wide range of knowledge within their field and across fields. If you’re a generalist who has ever felt overshadowed by your specialist colleagues, this book is for you.
The New Jim Crow
Mass Incarceration(监禁) in the Age of Colorblindness
by Michelle Alexander
Alexander’s book offers an eye-opening look into how the criminal justice system unfairly targets communities of color and especially Black communities by explaining the history and presenting the numbers behind mass incarceration.
Breath from Salt
A Deadly Genetic Disease, a New Era in Science, and the Patients and Families Who Changed Medicine Forever
by Bijal P. Trivedi
This book is truly uplifting. It documents a story of remarkable scientific innovation and how it has improved the lives of almost all cystic fibrosis(囊肿性纤维化) patients and their families.

Quebec city
Quebec city has long drawn admirers to its historic district the famed city wall, strange cobblestone lanes(鹅卵石小路)and handsome stone houses. This area transforms into a scenic Christmas village each December. The 403-year-old capital of Quebec province takes pride in the outdoors at Christmas time, when stone buildings shine with lights. Consider cross-country ski on the Plains of Abraham, or skate at the place D’ Youville square.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh, a magic city full of staircases and hills as well as Georgian and neo-Classical buildings, is famous for its mixture of the modern and the old. This is evident in winter, when Scotland’s capital puts on a six-week festival lasting until Jan. 6 that goes way beyond Christmas markets. You can ride roller coasters, climb a wall of ice and attend a vivid Christmas themed show by the cabaret troupe(剧团)La Clique.
Zurich
If buying gifts is on your travel schedule, Zurich is an impressive shopping center, particularly around the holidays, from multiple Christmas markets and the luxury(奢侈品)dress shops of Bahnhofstrasse Street, to the independent designers and antique shops in the merging industrial zones. Another annual lighting spectacle(壮观场面), Lichterschwimmen, on Dec. 21, includes hundreds of tiny lanterns that are sent floating down the River Limmat.
Sydney
A lack of snow does not dampen the Christmas spirit in Sydney. One great and free way to feel the holiday is to take this Dec. 21 walking tour of George Street, which promises “the most sharable window displays and coloured lights.” One advantage over other destinations: warm, sandy beaches that lie just minutes from downtown, where the natural beauty of Australia’s most popular city will be waiting.

I’m not going to sugarcoat my experience. It takes com mitment and a willingness to change long-held habits. In creating my kitchen, I tried a lot of different alternative products and some plain old com mon sense; the result, however, has been worth the effort. I’m recycling more and relying less on single-use products and I’m saving money too.
I’m not kidding when I say that I used to really love plastic storage bags, so this was, perhaps, the biggest challenge for me. Switching to reusable storage bags is a financial investment, but the cos is reasonable considering that I previously spent at least $ 100 annually on single-use plastic bags and wrap. I willcheck online periodically for recycling updates, where a zero-waste box for kitchen items is offered, from party supplies to mixed-materialfood containers.
I’m a clean freak (怪人) and used to go through an amount of paper towels on a daily basis, butit’s easy enough to take old T-shirts ortowels and cutthem up to use to wipe down surfaces. I’m also a fan of bamboo paper towels, which have the look and feel of traditional paper towels, yet are made from a highly renewable source and also break down in just 45 days. Better yet, they can be reused up to 100 times. As for kitchen sponges (海绵擦), I keep an eye out for those made with natural and recyclable materials.
When purchasing household items online from companies like Amazon or Jet, I will ask to have them shipped in as few boxes as possible or as small a box as possible if a single item is to be sent. I’ll let the company know that they should pay more attention to how It is packaging items for delivery.
