Next-generation fitness equipment and robots help you cook dinner. Those are a few of the countless new products expected to be shown next week at CES, the annual tech conference that typically sets the tone for the biggest trends of the year. Home automation, health and 5G will once again be hot topics, but many companies will also introduce pandemic-specific features to reflect our increased time at home.
Each year, reporters, exhibitors and investors typically explore Las Vegas showrooms filled with giant TVs, smart cars and robots, but CES will be online only for the first time in its 54-year history due to Covid-19.
The Consumer Technology Association, the nonprofit behind the four-day event starting Monday, said 1,800 exhibitors from around the world will fill its "digital venue" this year—a number that's down significantly from 4,000 in-person exhibitors last year. The move will allow tech companies from countries which have never attended before to take part in the online exhibition, but could also make it harder for smaller companies to get noticed without a physical showroom.
Registered attendees will be able to stream and re-watch keynotes from companies such as Verizon (VZ) and General Motors (GM), tune in to breakout sessions — about how, for example, technology is playing a role in vaccine deployment—and search through a registry of exhibitors to watch new product presentations.
It'll lack some of the signature ingredients of the trade show, such as hands-on time with the latest small machines and networking. But the technology that makes our lives more connected and convenient will still gain popularity.

Figures presented at the UN climate talks in Poznan,Poland, show that climate experts have less faith in alternative energy than they did 12 months ago.
The survey shows less support for wind energy, solar power, biofuels, biomass and hydrogen energy as technologies with “high potential” to reduce carbon levels in the atmosphere over the next 25 years.
Eric Whan of Globesean, which carried out the survey of “climate decision makers”.Said, “As the climate crisis deepens they could be becoming less optimistic that individual technologies may be able to solve the problem.’’
The survey, supported by groups including the World Bank, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Pew Center for Global Climate Change, questioned l,000 senior figures across governments, pressure groups and companies in 115 countries over the last few weeks.
Almost three quarters of the experts agreed in the survey that “equitable(公平的,平等的) economic growth and development and significant progress in combating(与……斗争)climate change can be achieved at the same time.’’
Asked to rate the likely Success of low-carbon technologies in the midterm, they showed less confidence than a similar survey 12 months ago.Support for offshore wind farms, was down 61%from 65%last year.Solar electricity generation was rated as having high potential by 66%of respondents, down from 74%.Support for hydrogen power was 32%,down form 36%in 2007.
The respondents also warned that a deep recession(衰退)would make a new global deal on climate harder to achieve. Some 44%agreed that the current economic crisis will significantly delay or compromise the “achievement of effective climate change agreements.’’

I actually got a VR headset (耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through Google Cardboard and knew I had a lesson!
To use VR in the classroom, you need two things: a smartphone that can download the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we’d be watching, I searched through free VR apps like Orbulus, Trench Experience VR and Cardboard. I also found hundreds of videos on YouTube. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don’t give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive ( 沉浸式虚拟现实的) when viewed through the headsets.
So far we’ve had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade U. S. History class. The Trench app allows students to “walk” through a trench (战壕) during World War I and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions (反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.
For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I’m going to write to my boss asking for a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.

A report on Saturday told the story of five hives (蜂箱) of honeybees that were left unattended after the eruption (爆发) of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which happened on September 19, for about 50 days (their beekeeper had been forced to leave the area). When the beekeeper returned, he found the hives covered in volcanic ash (灰) .
Inside the hives, however, the situation was completely different. To the beekeeper’s surprise, he found tens of thousands of live honeybees, who had managed to carry on despite the heat and harmful gases released by the volcano. They may have also gotten lucky because they were covered with light ash with small holes, which allowed air to pass through the hives.
Not all honeybees on La Palma were so lucky, though. Spanish news service EFE reported that a group of hives closest to the Cumbre Vieja had been covered completely by lava, hot volcano matter, which killed them.
Antonio Quesada, a spokesperson for the GranCanaria Beekeepers Association, said that a key part of the bees’ survival was propolis (蜂胶). Produced by bees, propolis is a sticky thing made from resins (树脂) the insects collect from plants. Often called “bee glue,” propolis is often used to smooth surfaces or cover the space in hives.
Quesada said the La Palma bees managed to seal (密封) themselves inside their hives to protect themselves from the volcanic gases, which can be harmful to people, animals, plants, and buildings. The bees also thought about food an date from the honey stores they had inside their hives.
“It’s unbelievable how such a tiny animal that has been around for hundreds of thousands of years can have that ability to survive,” Quesada said.
That’s not all they did, though. Although they sealed themselves in their hives, they made sure to leave a very small pathway to the outside so they could get out one day.

Recently, a programmer created a project called “996.ICU” on github.com, the well-known code-sharing website. The project criticized the “996 work schedule” where employees work from 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week, with the prospect of ending up in an intensive care unit (ICU).
The work schedule is common among Chinese tech companies. On the website, many programmers working for China’s tech companies shared evidence showing that their companies asked them to work the long hours. Among them were major names like e-commerce leaders Alibaba and JD.com, as well as telecoms equipment manufacturer Huawei.
Several bosses of tech companies have defended “996” as a kind of work culture. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, said it’s “a huge blessing” for young workers to work “996”. “If you don’t do ‘996’ when you’re young, when will you?” Ma said, according to a post on Alibaba’s WeChat account. “If you don’t invest more time and energy than others, how will you achieve the success you want?”
However, People’s Daily said that those who questioned “996” should not be labeled. “Valuing hard work does not equal forcing employees to work overtime,” commented the newspaper. “One should not attach the moral labels of ‘slackers’ or ‘not willing to strive’ to employees who are against ‘996’.”
Meanwhile, Cui Zhendong, a lawyer with the Yiqian Law Firm, said that it is illegal for a company to introduce a compulsory “996” work schedule for employees, since the Labor Law clearly states that the working hours of an employee should not exceed an average of eight hours daily, or 44 hours a week. Employers may extend working hours after consultation with an employee, but shall not exceed three hours a day or 36 hours a month.
A senior developer with the e-commerce giant Alibaba, who asked not to be named to protect his career, said employers seldom say the schedule is compulsory, but failure to follow the rules could lead to low performance scores and layoffs. “Refusal to overwork can also lead to losing your annual bonus, which is a lot of money,” he said.
“When resorting to the legal system for protection, there is a price to pay: time, money and the risk of losing your job, therefore they turn to cyberspace,” Jiang Ying, a professor of law said.
To better protect workers from harsh treatment, Jiang suggested that the systems for appealing to the court of law should be beefed up.
1. What can we infer from the passage?A.The “996”work schedule is merely a rare case among companies. |

Smith, a Hollywood leading man who admits that he’s far from enjoying outdoor activities, has put himself in danger while filming Welcome to Earth, a Disney original series from National Geographic. He was afraid at that time, but he says “It’s really difficult to enjoy things if you’re scared. I think the ability to see how beautiful things are is directly connected to your openness to them and fear closes you down.”
Smith says he was once scared of everything and hated water, but he learns to read the rapids (急流) while whitewater kayaking, rescues turtles near the Great Barrier Reef and goes 3,000 feet below the sea in a deep-water submarine.
Dr. Albert Lin, an engineer and explorer who has uncovered lost cities previously for National Geographic, was astonished to find that Smith was able to control his fears even in the face of real danger. While diving in the underground lake in Namibia, Smith got into trouble and Lin watched him “dropping at a rate that felt like maybe we wouldn’t see him again. “But Smith was able to control his mind and deal with the situation. “I respected Will Smith, the actor, before, but now I definitely have grown to truly respect Will Smith, the human being,” says Lin.
Produced by famous filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, the series carries on the tradition of National Geographic pushing the exploring envelope (极限) and employing the latest technology to help us understand our world. “I hope this can help people out there get a sense of how absolutely incredible our planet is,” says Lin.

They approved a report that appeared in the publication Bioscience earlier this month. It warns that the world would face "untold human suffering" if it does not make deep and lasting shifts in human activities that influence climate change. Three leaders of the study are from the United States. They worked on the study with scientists from universities in South Africa and Australia. This is the first time a large group of scientists have jointly (共同地)used the word "emergency" when talking about climate change.
"Despite 40 years of global climate negotiations ...we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to address this worrying situation,” the study said. “Climate change has arrived and is accelerating faster than many scientists expected."
The report identified five areas that the world needs to deal with immediately. The scientists appealed to nations to use energy more efficiently and cut their use of fossil fuels. They suggested that lawmakers approve taxes on the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. The report urges people to move toward more of a plant-based diet. Other areas of concern include preventing the destruction of forests and permanent loss of some plant and animal species. The report noted that it will most likely take strong actions by the public to move politicians to approve lasting policy changes.
The scientists added, "We believe that the prospects (前景)will be greatest if decision-makers and all of humanity quickly respond to this warning and declaration of a climate emergency, and act to support life on planet Earth, our only home.”

Survey-taking
Survey-taking is a way to make money during your summer holiday, especially if you live in an area that doesn’t have many chances. With a computer or smartphone, you can sit on your sofa and search for survey sites such as Surveys On The Go, InboxDollars or Swagbucks. Without much effort, you can start making money for your opinions. However, the ease of use comes with a low earning potential.
Food Delivery(递送)
If you enjoy driving, you can use your car to deliver food. You can sign up to deliver food from restaurants with services such as Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub. Another choice is delivering daily used goods with services such as Postmates, Shipt and Instacart. The earning potential for delivery can be higher than for other jobs because customers often give tips. The disadvantage is that these jobs require you to put in more time.
Photo Applications
If you go to the mall, you can use an app such as Field Agent or Gigwalk to make money by taking pictures of products in stores. See any help-wanted signs in the store windows? Take a picture and get paid for each one you find.
House Sitting and Pet Care
Summer is a time when people take vacations and may need someone to look after their homes or pets. Services such as HouseSitter and MindMyHouse connect homeowners with proper house sitters(看房人). Tigers’ habitats have reduced by 40% since 2006, leaving fewer than 4000 of the animals in the wild. Those living near roads are particularly attacked because they are at risk of being hit by vehicles, have more difficulties finding food, and are easier to be killed. Using a global dataset, Neil Carter at the University of Michigan and his colleagues calculated that the tiger’s current range, which mostly distributed in south and south-east Asia, contains 134,000 kilometres of roads. They estimated that 57% of tigers live within 5 kilometres of these roads, which is considered dangerously close.
This close to roads could be decreasing the world’s tiger population by more than20%, the researchers’ modelling suggests. Nearly 24,000 kilometres of new roads are planned for construction within the tiger’s range by 2050, which will make it even harder for the animals to avoid these risks.
“New roads could be made more tiger-friendly by building them away from key tiger populations, banning overnight traffic, installing road signs to warn drivers of the presence of tigers, and building tiger-friendly crossings so that wild animals can safely cross forests on both sides of the road,” says Carter. These have been built on roads and highways in Malaysia.
In 2010, all 13 countries with wild tiger populations committed to a plan to double the tiger population by 2022. By 2016, research suggested that the global wild tiger population stopped declining and had increased. “Building tiger-friendly roads will be crucial to reaching this goal,” says Carter.

In mid-December, my husband and I had been informed that he had cancer and that he was going to die. He had less than a year left, the doctors said.
In the years since that painful season, I have come to look back upon New Year's Eve as an ending and a beginning. New Year's Eve brings a halt to the endless commitments that fill our daily lives and a chance to reflect.
New Year's Eve is full of possibility, and anticipation. What will be the surprising experiences and delightful successes in the coming year? But also, what disappointments are waiting for us in the next twelve months?
In many ways, New Year's Eve and the days that surround it are a line between past and future. That line is made up of a series of moments of transition that take us out of the old and into the new. Transition can be challenging for many of us. It's about letting go of the familiar and diving headlong (迅猛地)into the unfamiliar.
Just as, back then, I had to face letting go of the life I had led with my beloved husband and stepping into a new world as a widowed(丧偶的)mom. I find that each year I have to step out of the version of me that suited the year that is ending and ease into the version of me who will rise to the goals I am holding for myself for the year ahead.
Last year at this time, I sat in a chair in southern France and drank in the stillness and beauty of the countryside around me. The three children and I had brought into this world talked and laughed around the table beside me as we enjoyed a lunch of bread and cheese.
I was filled with a sense of joy and I had a glowing (热情洋溢的)heart that was full of hope. It was another ending and another beginning. May we all transition into the best of what lies ahead. May we all find happiness in this holiday season.

Living in an exciting social environment was found to reduce fat in mice's belly by half over four weeks, even if they ate more. US researchers say that social excitement aids weight loss by turning white fat into brown. White fat stores calories and makes us fatter, while brown burns energy to produce heat. Turning white fat into brown is extremely difficult, normally requiring long- term stay in cold conditions or exciting part of the body's nervous system.
However, scientists from Ohio State University now think that having a busy social life is an even more effective way of changing white fat into brown. The team came up with their theory by studying the effects of various living environments on mice. Those, who lived alongside a greater number of mice, had more space and toys to excite themselves and then lost far more weight over the course of the study than their “couch potato" fellows.
Study author, Dr Matthew During, whose team's findings appear in the journal Cell Metabolism, said, "I'm still amazed at the degree of fat loss that occurs." Explaining how new technology had threatened face-to-face socializing, he added, "It's not just a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle and high calorie foods, but an increasing lack of social activities." Co-author Dr Lei Cao said,"Loneliness is a potential factor for cancer and death; it's equal to cigarette smoking to a certain extent. Social activities are very vital.

From the airport to the heart of the city, he did 100 km per hour, bypassing lorries, motorbikes and taxi-vans crowed with people. The second thing was that he knew everybody and everything about Cape Town. This was good for me.
On the first day, Thabo took me to the suburbs with unpronounceable names — ORanjezicht — from where you can watch the sun go down on Africa. The next day we went to Cape Flats, the run-down township where the buildings were made of cardboard and rusty (生锈的)iron. It was truly vast — nearly a million people live here, side by side. Skinny dogs slid out of the way as Thabo zoomed along roads of mud and rotting rubbish. Some people waved, others stared. Children ran barefoot by the car.
Later that night we walked around the busy Victoria, Cape Town’s most fashionable area. The contrast from the township could not be greater: the smells of cooking rose from the kitchens — Asian, French, Italian. The bars and restaurants were packed, and I soon found out why. Cape Town is a paradise for gourmets (美食家), seafood-lovers and people like me, who just like eating. We went into a charming little pubs, and Thabo told me I couln’t leave Cape Town without trying some Cape seafood, so I did. It’s delicious.
On my final morning, we spent an hour sitting outside a cafe. Then we were driving again, experiencing the diverse landscape — green valleys. It was a great way to say goodbye to a place I knew only too briefly. I promised myself, and Thabo, that I would be back.
