Inventions That Changed the World

The medieval era was not short of groundbreaking ideas. As we'll explore here important scientific leaps and popular new products were invented in this era, some of which remain important to this day.

The Printing Press

Date 11 th—15th Century

Use: Publishing

Well before Johannes Gutenberg brought the idea of mass production of printed text to Europe with his Gutenberg Bible, the moveable type printing press was already in use in China. Before this, in Asia as in Europe, books were handwritten to be copied. In 1440 Gutenberg applied similar technology to mass produce books for the general public. Freeing up access to knowledge in a cheap and efficient way was a game changer.

Coffee

Date: 15tlh Century

Use: Drink

The exact timing and origin of coffee bean cultivation is greatly disputed, but we can say with some confidence that by the 15th century coffee beans were being grown and roasted for the production of coffee in the Yemeni region of Arabia. From there it would spread to Egypt and eventually to Europe. First though it took root in the Near East where the stimulating drink became a popular alternative to alcohol. The secondary offshoot of coffee drinking became the spread of coffeehouses where men would meet to play games like chess as well as discuss politics, smoke and listen to music.

Gunpowder

Date: 10th Century

Use: Entertainment, Firearms

The black powder was an incredibly important milestone for humanity. This relatively simple explosive mixture might be best known for its use in weapons and fireworks, but it also offered new means of mining for resources, which was a massive time — and energy-saving innovation. The formula originates in China where the mixture was first used for setting fires. The impact of this technology on the world of weaponry is well known to us now.

【推荐1】It is practically inevitable: sometime around the age of 40 people start to need reading glasses. Try as they might, there’s no avoiding it. One mobile app creator claims that practicing with their technology can train your eyes to see better.though some eye doctors are not sure.

The reason why many people eventually need reading glasses is that the lens (晶状体) of the eye loses   flexibility with age, and has trouble focusing on nearby objects. The condition is called presbyopia (老花眼), which is just a natural side effect of aging.

The first app claiming to work out the solution is called GlassesOff. First you take a test given by the app, and then follow its customized training course. Three days a week, for 12-15 minutes, you’ll go through a series of visual exercises, such as recognizing small gray letters on a gray screen. After two or three months, it claims that you can kiss your reading glasses goodbye.

“We wanted to develop an application that can help people improve their reading ability by improving the way that the brain processes information.” says GlassesOff CEO Nimrod Madar. Until recently it wasn’t possible because scientists did not understand how the image processing capability of the brain actually works. “GlassesOff comes up with the idea of neuroplasticity (神经可塑性). Studies have shown that through training new connections can be made in the brain So that it can continue adapting to the world around us. In terms of vision, this means that through training, the brain may be able to form new connections that allow it to clearly process text even when the text is blurred by aging eyes.

In a 30-person study published in Scientific Reports in February, some participants were able to read letters 1.6 times smaller after using the app. Adults aged 40 to 60 years old had the most success. The study also found that the users’ eye health improved by an average of 8.6 years.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, it probably is. “Human vision quality is determined by the physical eye and the way he brain reads the information that the eye captures,” says Rhee, a doctor from Harvard University. “To think that we can reverse (逆转) presbyopia only by neuroplasticity is just not accurate.” It might not make a huge difference in terms of fighting presbyopia, but brain training could make a difference for younger people whose eyes are still more flexible.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about presbyopia?
A.It is actually a natural phenomenon of aging of human eyes.
B.People tend to suffer form it when they reach the age of 40.
C.It can be prevented by means of proper eye muscle exercising.
D.It occurs when eyes fail to focus on nearby objects well.
2. GlassesOff may improve people’s reading ability by________.
A.helping people stay away from presbyopia
B.reducing the negative effects of aging on eyes
C.making the text that people read larger than normal
D.training the brain to process visual information better
3. The fourth paragraph mainly tell us_______.
A.the principle on which GlassesOff works
B.why researchers came up with Glassesoff
C.how training makes new connections in our brain
D.now our brain processes the information that our eyes take in
4. What is Rhee’s attitude towards GlassesOff?
A.Optimistic.B.Negative.C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章通过介绍研究人员开发出的一种新的培养人们创造力的方法——基于叙事理论的方法,来告诉我们人们是可以通过训练来培养创造力的。

【推荐2】Researchers have developed a new method for training people to be creative, one that shows promise of succeeding far better than current ways of inspiring creativity.

This new method, based on narrative (叙述的) theory, helps people be creative in the way children and artists are by making up stories that imagine alternative worlds, change perspective and generate unexpected actions.

“The narrative method works by recognizing that we’re all creative,” said Angus Fletcher, who developed the method and is a professor of English and a member of the Ohio State University’s Project Narrative. “We as a society completely undervalue the creativity of kids and many others because we are addicted to the idea that some people are more creative than others.”

The narrative method of training for creativity uses many of the techniques that writers use to create stories. One is to develop new worlds in your mind. For example, employees at a company might be asked to imagine a world in which all their customers are like that. Another technique is perspective-changing. An employer might be asked to answer a problem by thinking like another member of their team.

“Creativity isn’t about guessing the future correctly. It’s about making yourself open to imagining completely different possibilities,” Fletcher said. “When you do that, you can respond more quickly and flexibly to the changes that do occur.”

Fletcher and his team are also continuing to work with new organizations, such as the Worthington Local School District in Ohio.

“It’s better to hire a diverse group of people and then train them to be creative. That creates a culture which recognizes that there are already creative people in your organization you aren’t taking advantage of,” he said. “This new method of training creativity could only have come from Ohio State University’s Project Narrative, which is itself proof of the power of creativity.”

1. What may make the narrative method workable according to Fletcher?
A.Creating alternative stories.B.Changing new perspective.
C.Generating unexpected tasks.D.Being aware of our creativity.
2. How does the author develop paragraph 4?
A.By using examples.B.By making comparison.
C.By answering questions.D.By quoting techniques.
3. What result is expected of training creativity?
A.To develop a culture gradually.B.To react to changes quickly.
C.To create possibilities freely.D.To predict the future correctly.
4. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Ways Can Be Adopted to Inspire Creativity
B.The Power of Creativity Has Been Found
C.Anyone Can Be Trained to Be Creative
D.A Way Is Found to Recognize Creative People

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究,科学家们发明了一种可以跟随太阳移动的双面太阳能电池板。

【推荐3】Most solar panels (太阳能电池板) acquire sunlight from only one side, meaning they can get more or less of it depending on where the sun is in the sky. In recent years, they’ve become far more effective, generally turning around 22 percent of the light they acquire into energy. In a new study published in the journal Joule on Tuesday, scientists introduce a way to increase that percentage even higher: double-sided solar panels that can move to follow the sun.

Basically, these panels can acquire sun from not only their sun-facing side but also from the light reflected off the ground onto their dark undersides. At the same time, a GPS allows them to move on an axis (轴) from east to west in order to always be pointed at a best angle to acquire the sun’s rays. Though double-sided solar panels and sun-following solar panels are both in use currently, models that combine the two technologies aren’t widely available for commercial use. Solar experts predict rapid growth in the market soon, though.

The study authors determined that these two-sided sun-tracking panels produce an average of 35 percent more energy than single-panel systems that don’t move, and are 16 percent cheaper. That holds true even when taking into account changes in weather conditions.

“This means that investing in double-sided and tracking systems should be a safe bet for the future, ” Carlos Rodriguez-Gallegos, the study’s lead author, said.

The same warnings for solar panels and their effect on the local environment apply to the double-sided, moving systems as well, if not more so. Lead used in solar panels can be one source of local pollution, and Dustin Mulvaney, an associate professor of environmental studies, told Earther in an email double-sided panels could mean “twice as much lead” as traditional solar systems.

Since these new panels are more energy efficient, they could save not only money but also land. That would require changing how solar contracts work today.

1. What does most solar panels rely on to acquire sunlight according to the passage?
A.The amount of sunlight.B.The location of the sun.
C.The quality of solar panels.D.The size of solar panels.
2. What does the underlined word “them” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.The sun’s rays.B.The panels’ undersides.
C.The double-sided panelsD.The panels’ sun-facing sides.
3. What’s Carlos Rodriguez -Gallegos’ attitude towards the two-sided solar panels?
A.Uncertain.B.Supportive.C.Doubtful.D.Negative.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Double-Sided Solar Panels that Follow the Sun
B.Advantages of the Double-Sided Solar Panels
C.Application of the Double-Sided Solar Panels
D.Double-Sided Solar Panels and Single-Sided Solar Panels
