Eyes are significant organs of our body. Having a good eyesight is sometimes a must in applying for a university or a job. So many researches have been done about eyes, especially about near-sight.
Being nearsighted is far more common than it once was. It has gone up by 66 percent in Americans since the early 1970s, according to a 2009 study by the National Eye Institute. In China and other East Asian countries, as many as 90 percent of recent high school graduates are thought to be nearsighted.
Near-sight happens when eyeballs are longer than normal, changing the angle at which light enters the eye and therefore the ability to focus on distant objects. The disorder involves a complex interplay(相互作用)of genetics and environment and usually begins before adolescence, when the eye is growing, but it can worsen in early adulthood.
Some experts connect the rising rates to the many hours young people stare at computers and other screens. But a recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests that a greater factor may be a side effect of all that screen-watching—it's keeping children inside.
This new study joins a growing body of research indicating that a lack of direct sunlight may reshape the human eye and do harm to vision. Strong correlations(相关性)were found between current eyesight and volunteers' lifetime exposure to sunlight.
Those who had gotten the most sun, particularly between the ages of 14 and 19, were about 25 percent less likely to have developed myopia(近视眼)by middle age. Exposure to sunlight up to the age of 30 can also confer a protective benefit. This relationship held true even when the researchers controlled for education as a marker primarily of time spent reading and gazing at screens.

It’s the first time that scientists have measured an age-related metabolic(新陈代谢的) slowdown in another large-bodied species besides humans, said the first author Rebecca Rimbach.
Rimbach has studied energy consumption in animals ranging from mice to monkeys. But data on the inner workings of sea animals such as dolphins and whales have been scant, she says. “That’s because these ocean animals are difficult to catch for repeated measurement. It can be very tricky to get the animal back when you need it,” Rimbach said.
The researchers studied 10 bottlenose dolphins aged 10 to 45 living at two sea animal centers. To measure their average daily metabolic rates, the researchers used the “doubly labeled water method”. It involved getting the dolphins to drink a few pounds of water with “heavy” forms of hydrogen and oxygen put in, and then following how long they took to force them out. Carers collected the dolphins blood and analyzed the levels of heavy hydrogen and oxygen atoms(原子) in it. Thus, the team was able to count how much carbon dioxide (CO2) the dolphins produced each day, and then how many calories they were burning as they went about their lives.
The scientists found the oldest dolphins in the study, both in their 40s, used 22% to 49% fewer calories each day than expected for their body weight. And similar to humans, more of those calories ended up as fat rather than muscle. Dolphins in their 40s had body fat percentages that were 2.5 times higher than the under-20 dolphins’. It wasn’t for lack of exercise and it wasn’t because they’re eating too much, Rimbach said. It was related to metabolic aging.
The researchers said such work could uncover factors besides diet and lifestyle that caused age-related weight gain in people. “Further studies into this commonality we share with dolphins may help us understand why our metabolism slows as we age,” said co-author Hannah Salomons.
1. What does the underlined word “scant” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Detailed. | B.Strange. | C.Rare. | D.Different. |
A.To better know about their oxygen demand. | B.To figure out the amount of burnt calories. |
C.To analyze the main content of the blood. | D.To check the health condition of dolphins. |
A.Their unhealthy lifestyles. | B.Their shortage of exercise. |
C.Their weakened metabolism. | D.Their preference for fat food. |
A.Burning calories needs more fat as dolphins age. |
B.Exercise can speed up some animals’ metabolism. |
C.Dolphins’ meal timing may influence weight loss. |
D.Dolphins metabolism tends to slow down with age. |

The U. S. research from the 1980s estimated a meal of 30 kilograms could make a one-tonshark continue living for more than six weeks.
That made assumptions that large sharks could survive long periods without eating.
However, a University of Tasmania-led study published this week in Scientific Reports found that 30kg was only enough for 12-15days.
Researchers tagged (给……附上标签) a dozen great white sharks at Neptune Islands off South Australia and calculated their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate based on swimming speeds. They worked out how much energy the sharks burned and how much food they required.
“Their metabolic rate is faster than we assumed.”
Jayson Semmens was the lead author on the study. He said, “They (U. S. researchers) picked a shark that probably wasn’t working very hard at the time when they did it . At the time it was a new study. They did some metabolic work similar to us but on one shark.”
“The white sharks, which we tagged, are working pretty hard … they’re coming up to some pretty high speed to catch the seals.” he said, ”Their metabolic rate is much faster than what we had assumed. These animals are probably going to be feeding every day, rather than several weeks.”
The research also sought to improve understanding of how sharks fit into the ocean ecosystem.
“We don’t have a good handle on the population sizes of white sharks. We know that sharks in general are under pressure around the world from overfishing.” Semmens said, “Furthermore, they’re long -lived. They reproduce late in their life and they produce a small number of babies.”
Semmens said the effects of removing white sharks from the ocean were thus far more important than realized. “They’re keeping under control a lot more animals than we thought,” he said.

It's not just baby shampoo and dirty diapers(尿布); in most cases, you won't even be able to identify exactly what it is. And then one day, it's just gone-often without your even realizing it's been fading. So what exactly is that"new baby smell"?
No one is exactly sure. A 2012 study did find proof of "old people smell", a recognizable body odor that can't be fully explained by diet, or other habits. One of the study's authors theorized that a smell related to a certain age group may be an evolutionary feature designed to help humans choose their mates.
That new baby smell could also serve an evolutionary purpose - for example, to help a mother identify her baby more easily, similar to how babies can identify their mothers by the smell almost immediately. Several studies have shown that most mothers can identify their babies by the smell alone. It may also help a woman bond with her baby. A 2013 study found that when women were given an undershirt with a baby's smell on it (not their own baby's smell), their brains reward center lit up. This was true whether or not the women were mothers themselves. A 2008 study of marmoset monkeys(狨猴) showed that fathers who smelled their newboms were more tolerant toward their babies while facing challenges that might draw their attention away from focusing on their children and family needs, according to the study.
It's been suggested that the new baby smell is really a combination of bacteria, breast milk, and other ingredients that you'd generally not look for in a sweet-smelling perfume. And since there are still so many questions about what it is and why it exists, recreating it exactly is, sad to say, very unlikely. So, the next time you open a box of old baby clothes and get a sniff of the familiar soap, powder, and clothes, don't be surprised if you're transported right back to those newborn days, able to conjure up your baby's smell.

No one tries harder than the jobless to find silver linings in this national economic disaster. Many said that unemployment, while extremely painful, had improved them in some ways: they had become less materialistic and more financially prudent(节俭的); they were more aware of the struggles of others. In limited respects, perhaps the recession will leave society better off. At the very least, it has awoken us from our national fever dream of easy riches and bigger houses, and put a necessary end to an era of reckless(鲁莽的) personal spending.
But for the most part, these benefits seem thin, uncertain, and far off.In The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, the economic historian Benjamin Friedman argues that both inside and outside the U.S.,lengthy periods of economic stagnation or decline have almost always left society more mean-spirited and less inclusive, and have usually stopped or reversed the advance of rights and freedoms.Anti-immigrant sentiment typically increases,as does conflict between races and classes.
Income inequality usually falls during a recession, but it has not shrunk in this one. Indeed, this period of economic weakness may reinforce class divides, and decrease opportunities to cross them-especially for young people. The research of Till Von Wachter, the economic at Columbia University, suggests that not all people graduating into a recession see their life chances dimmed: those with degrees from elite(精英) universities catch up fairly quickly to where they otherwise would have been if they had graduated in better times;it is the masses beneath them that are left behind.
In the Internet age, it is particularly easy to see the resentment that has always been hidden within American society. More difficult, in the moment, is discerning precisely how these lean times are affecting society's character. In many respects, the U.S. was more socially tolerant entering this recession than at any time in its history, and a variety of national polls on social conflict since then have shown mixed results. We will have to wait and see exactly how these hard times will reshape our social fabric(组织). But they certainly will reshape it,and all the more so the longer they extend.

What are these things?
They are called“doohickies"·A doohickey is a word you use when you do not know,or you have forgotten, the real name of an object·
The MacMillan Dictionary defines doohickey as“something such as a small object or tool that you cannot remember the name of"·The American Heritage Dictionary says it is“something, especially a small device or part, whose name is unknown or forgotten".
Language experts say the word first started being used in the United States in the early 1900s· But other experts say they have seen examples of words like that in writings from the middle 1800s.

It is the first time a Canadian Team or any team outside the United States, has won the NBA. The President of Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri, who led the team to make history, is from Nigeria.
During the half time break, if you were reading the cool and fashionable British Vogue magazine that features some of the trendiest fashions in the world, then it would be nice to know that the editor of it is Edward Enninful, born in Ghana.
After the Raptors game, you got into your stylish Tesla electric car, the world’s best known and bestselling commercially produced all electric car. The search for a diet that helps people lose weight goes back decades. In recent years, there's been much discussion about the strong points of low-fat diets, compared with low-carbon diets. And some claim that the low-carbon diets work well for short-term weight loss, but there isn’t enough evidence to show how well the two types of diets work and what the effects are on people's health in the long term.
In addition, it's been recognized that weight-loss programs are better if they include some support to help people make changes to their eating and exercise habits. This is often called behavioral therapy, because it works through changing people's behavior.
The new study has researched people who followed a weight-loss program over two years, all of whom had behavioral therapy. According to the actual situation of different people, half the people followed a low-carbon diet, and half followed a low-fat diet. And the result shows: people on both diets did equally well in losing weight. After two years, they had lost on average 7 kilograms. This amount of weight loss is enough to have positive effects on the health of fat people. What’s more, the group who had the low-carbon diets had much better levels of HDL cholesterol than people on the low-fat diets.
If you need to lose weight, this study shows that the behavioral therapy is able to work effectively. You may find it easier to lose weight as part of a supervised weight-loss program that can help you break bad habits and make healthy changes to your diets and lifestyle.
1. What advantage do low-carbon diets have?A.They can help people remember better. |

British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become still and the winds would drop.
Science has given us the reason. According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid(湿热的) air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating (旋转的) winds.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good method is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms take place after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and fierce winds.
So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display(展示) of nature's temper (脾气).
1. What is the function of Paragraph 3?A.To describe how the eye of the storm comes into being. |
