We’ve all heard exercise helps you live longer. But a new study goes one step further, finding that a sedentary(久坐不动的) lifestyle is worse for your health than smoking and heart disease.

Dr. Wael Jaber, a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study, called the results "extremely surprising."

"Being unfit in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis(预后), as far as death, than being a smoker," Jaber told CNN. "We've never seen something as noticeable as this and as objective as this. "

"It should be treated almost as a disease that has a prescription, which is called exercise," he said.

Researchers studied 122,007 patients who took exercise stress tests at Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 2020 to measure death rate relating to the benefits of exercise and fitness. Comparing those with a sedentary lifestyle to the top exercise performers, he said, the risk associated with death is "500% higher. "

What made the study so unique, beyond the number of people studied, he said was that researchers weren't relying on patients self-reporting their exercise. "This is not the patients telling us what they do," Jaber said. "This is our testing them and figuring out objectively the real measure of what they do. "

Researchers have always been concerned that "ultra(高强度的)" exercisers might be at a higher risk of death, but the study found that not to be the case.

The benefits of exercise were seen across all ages and in both men and women, "probably a little more noticeable in females," Jaber said. "Whether you’re in your 40s or your 80s, you will benefit in the same way. "

With the arrival of summer, many people are worried about contracting COVID-19 through mosquitoes or flies.

In response to the concern, Wang Liping, a researcher from the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said there is not yet evidence of people getting infected with the novel coronavirus through a mosquito or fly. Kids are more prepared against virus

Children may be protected from coronavirus because they catch so many colds, scientists have suggested. Figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest children are just as likely to pick up the virus, but few ever develop serious disease, or even show symptoms.

While adults pick up a cold around two to four times a year, school age children catch an average of 12 colds annually, studies have shown. It may allow youngsters to build up some ongoing resistance that adults do not have.

【推荐2】It’s no secret chocolate is dangerous for dogs, but the risk is even higher during the holiday season, according to a new report.

Researchers from institutions in England, recently conducted a study, published in the journal Vet Record, to determine how often the pets come in contact with the treat. To do so, they thoroughly searched the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network database, which includes patient documents from 500 clinics. They examined 2.7 million records of dogs from November 2012 to May 2017 and identified 386 cases of “chocolate ingestion” suffered by animals. After analyzing the results, they found that dogs are most exposed to chocolate during the Christmas season. In fact, chances are five times higher than holiday-free times of the year.

“Dogs love a chocolate treat and at Christmas there are plenty about. Sadly dogs can’t eat chocolate safely, so many of them end up making an unplanned visit to the vet, which can disrupt the celebrations,” coauthor Peter-John Noble said in a statement.

Why is that? Chocolate contains a toxic ingredient for dogs called theobromine, which is a caffeinelike stimulant. It can lead to an upset stomach, a racing heartbeat, dehydration, seizures or even death.

But December isn’t the only troublesome month. Easter, which is in March or April, is a risk period, too, as the candy is more likely to be in the home.

To combat the issue, researchers are cautioning people to keep festive chocolate away from their pups. In the case their pooch does consume it, owners should see the vet as soon as possible and be prepared to quantify how much chocolate was eaten.

C.Because dogs love a chocolate treat too much.
D.Because many of dogs end up visiting a vet.
3. Which one is the most troublesome month for raising dogs?
A.AprilB.March
C.DecemberD.February
4. What is the main idea of this passage?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是一种会飞行的作物帮手——瓢虫。

【推荐3】What do you usually do when a flying insect lands on your arm? Most likely you blow it away. But what if that bug is a ladybug(瓢虫)? Then chances are that you would let it stay. What is it about ladybugs that we like?

Farmers once thought ladybugs were a good luck sign. A ladybug in the field meant that the crops(庄稼) would be successful and the weather would be good. The farmers may have been exaggerating(夸大) about what a very small bug can do, but in fact ladybugs do help out with the crops. They eat harmful insects.

Actually, it is not the adult ladybug that eats the other insects. It’s the ladybug larvae(幼虫). Ladybugs lay their eggs on leaves that are covered with aphids or other insects. When the larvae come out of the eggs, they are very hungry and will eat mites, aphids, mealybugs, green flies, and other crop-destroyers.

A single ladybug larva can eat over 1,000 aphids in one day. In the 1800s, ladybugs were brought all the way from Australia to California and set free among orange trees that were dying from being eaten by insects. The little red and black “eating machines” completely saved all the trees.

Ladybugs go about their daily business without worrying much about anything. Very few birds or insects will eat a ladybug because it gives off something that is dangerous to eat. Ladybugs also protect themselves by playing dead. They fall off leaves and remain very still until their enemy goes away.

So next time you see a ladybug, think about what it may be up to. Maybe it is off to save an orange tree. Maybe its next move will be to fall off a leaf and play dead or stand up to a bird about 100 times its size. Maybe it’s letting you know that the weather will be good tomorrow. Who knows? Ladybugs are special.

1. What do we know about mites and aphids?
A.They do harm to the crops.B.They eat more than they should.
C.They are food for adult ladybugs.D.They are the enemy of ladybug larvae.
2. What does the underlined part “stand up to” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Play with.B.Worry about.C.Get along with.D.Fight back against.
3. What does the author think of the ladybug?
A.It is a crop-destroyer.B.It is a good luck sign.
C.It is a little flying helper.D.It is a big eating machine.
