The white paper, the product of surveys in 31 provinces, covers many aspects of sleep and sleep quality. It has attracted widespread interest among netizens after its release.
The report shows over 300 million people in China today have sleep disorders, while the proportion of insomnia(失眠症) among people who exercise regularly is only 10 percent. This means the rate of insomnia among the general population is nearly four times higher than those who exercise regularly.
Studies show sleep is essential, as people spend a third of their lives asleep. Yet today more and more people are suffering from insomnia, which causes us to suffer both physically and mentally.
Increased mental stress is one of the major causes of insomnia. Today people generally work more intensely and are under more mental stress, thus causing sleep disorders. Studies show people with higher income are more likely to sleep late because of overtime, and that lawyers, business executives and doctors often nave to stay up late because of overtime work.
In addition, the popularity or electronics has also enriched our nightlife. Some netizens say, “I feel empty if I don’t browse Tiktok or weibo before going to bed. Retaliatory agrypnia(报复性熬夜)is also increasing among younger generation. They say “The only time I have is the time before I go to bed, and as long as I don’t sleep today, the next day will never come. It forms a vicious cycle in which people don’t get enougn sleep at night and feel sleepy during the day.
Decreased immunity, memory loss, obesity, endocrine disruption and increased risk of depression—these are all possible risks of staying up late.

According to a team of researchers at MIT, both cases may be possible before long, thanks to a new material that can store solar energy during the day and release it later as heat. This transparent polymer film could be applied to many different surfaces, such as window glass or clothing.
Solar energy is only available about half the time we need it — during daylight. For the sun to become a major power provider for human needs, there has to be an efficient way to save it up for use during nighttime and stormy days. Most such efforts have focused on storing and recovering solar energy in the form of electricity, but the new finding, by MlI professor Jeffrey Grossman, Postdoc David Zhitomirsky and graduate student Eugene Cho, could provide a highly efficient method for storing the sun's energy through a chemical reaction and releasing it later as heat.
The key to enabling long-term, stable storage of solar heat, the team said, is to store it in the form of a chemical change rather than storing the heat itself. But heat will disappear over time no matter how good the material around it is, so the team set up a chemical storage system that can keep the energy in a stable molecular configuration. When exposed to sunlight, the molecules can stay that way for long periods Then, when triggered (触发)by a very specific temperature or something else, the molecules return to their original shape , giving off heat in the process.
Such chemically-based storage materials, known as Solar Thermal Fuels(STF), have been developed before. But those earlier efforts were designed to be used in liquid solutions and not able to make durable (耐用的) solid-state films. The new approach is the first based on a solid-state material, in this case a polymer, and the first based on inexpensive materials and widespread production technology.

To win that claim, Fan’ s nano-particle liquid bandage had to surpass the experiments of hundreds of fifth to eighth graders as well as nine other finalists. Fan started developing her liquid bandage in April 2019 to fight the overuse of antibiotics(抗生素).
According to the CDC, roughly 2 million people every year suffer a bacterial infection in the U. S. and about 23, 000 passed away as a result. If left alone, a UN study reported, drug- resistant diseases or the “ superbug” could lead to 10 million deaths across the globe by 2050. When Fan’ s sprayable bandage dries on a person’ s skin, it creates a thin layer that protects the wounded area while breaking the cell wall and killing the bacteria on the skin. After experimenting with copper nitrate(硝酸铜) to fight bacteria, switching to the silver nitrate ended up being the major catalyst (催化剂) to seeing results for her award-winning project.
“ Thousands of years ago, ancient people would use copper and silver to eat with and they would drink water from like copper bowls to kill bacteria, ” Fan explained. “ I found out that it didn’t work. So I used nano silver. ”
Sir Alexander Fleming’ s discovery of penicillin— a type of antibiotic— is Fan’ s favorite scientific discovery. That said, she doesn’ t think humans should rely too heavily on penicillin.
Following her years at Westview High School, Fan hopes to continue her biology track at Stanford University. Along with the $ 25, 000 cash prize she won on October 29, becoming Amer-ica’ s Top Young Scientist may help get the private university’ s attention.

Perhaps she got held up by caring for her children or an important task. Perhaps she didn't want to meet but didn't take the time to call off. Or maybe she had a busy week and simply forgot to write down your meeting time. Or it was possible that you called the wrong number.
In social situations like these, our minds can offer a variety of explanations, ranging from ones that are kind to ones that put the blame on the other party. Psychologists refer to this as our attributional style. Past research has found that individuals with a hostile attributional style— that is, who tend to think others' action is a result of bad intentions— tend to be less satisfied with their relationships.
According to a new study in the Journal of Happiness Studies, they're also generally less happy. That means that all those little assumptions we're making about other people might be something we can work on to improve our well-being.
In the study, 707 participants from the United States, Poland, and Japan were asked to analyze situations like the one above. Participants then rated the situation on three factors: how much they thought the other person acted purposely, how much blame they put on them, and how angry they were, as a measure of hostile attributions. They also filled out a questionnaire about the degree they considered themselves a happy person.
The researchers found that people who gave others the benefit of the doubt all the time were happy, compared to the participants who always blamed others. People who only sometimes gave others the benefit of the doubt were also happier.
The researchers can't say for sure whether seeing people as unfriendly directly lowers our happiness, or whether unhappy people are just more likely to make hostile attributions in the first place. However, this study does suggest the possibility that giving people the benefit of the doubt can improve our relationships and our well-being.
Dorota Jasielska, assistant professor at the Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw and lead author of the paper, suggests that we start by developing positive and trusting social relationships. When we find ourselves surrounded by warmth and support, it can help us to see the social world in a more positive light. If you feel lonely, volunteering or joining friendly welcoming organizations can be a good way to broaden your social circle.
Another important strategy is to have open and direct communication. Instead of letting your anxieties get worse, Jasielska explains, it may be better to simply talk to people about their confusing behavior.
So the next time a friend calls off plans or forgets to text back, consider giving them the benefit of the doubt and waiting to hear their side of things before jumping to conclusions. Assuming others have good intentions— particularly the people we already know and love—will make the world seem like a friendlier place.

In America, many people use sunlight and non-natural light to darken their skin. Health
experts advise against what is called“tanning”because of its links to akin cancer. In the African country of Senegal(塞内加尔),some women take health risks trying to do just the opposite.
An average beauty supply shop in Dakar has many kinds of skin-lightening creams and
soaps. The World Health Organization says that 25%of Senegalese women use skin-lightening production a usual basis. These products can contain chemicals, like mercury(汞), hydroquinone(对苯二酚),etc. These are dangerous ingredients that can cause cancer and possibly other physical damage to the akin. They can actually burn the eyes and skin.
Shop worker Adama Diagne advises her visitors to avoid the stronger products that promise fast results. She users a cream that is made from carrots, not the strong chemical, hydroquinone. She says that it is a personal choice and that no one pressures her. Some women want to be black every day,but for her,she likes to be a shade of brown. Women in Senegal say they lighten their skin for the same reason that women all over the world make changes to their appearance. They say they want to look beautiful,to find a husband, to stand out in a crowd or simply to look great for a special event.
This thinking troubles Senegalese film-maker Khardiata Pouye Sall. So,she made“This
Color That Bothers Me",a film about the subject of skin lightening. She said,“I used the most shocking images so that women would see the dangers. It is hard to understand why a woman says that dark skin is not beautiful. It is in their heads. They want to please a man,to he loved or they want to please society,to succeed."
Ms. Sall says that the government needs to better control the marketing and the sale of skin-lightening products. But she adds that education is the best way to persuade people against using them.
