Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language.Mr.Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr.Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them.Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you’re not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr.Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you’re in.“Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like "hello""thank you” and “I’m sorry,I don’t speak your language.Do you speak English?” is a must, Mr.Thibault said.Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don’t know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you’re heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with.Whenever Mr.Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip.“I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,”he said.

【推荐2】Become a Better English Student with These Study Tips
●Study every day.
Learning any new language is a time-consuming process, more than 300 hours by some estimates. Rather than try and cram (临时死记硬背) a few hours of review once or twice a week, most experts say short, regular study sessions are more effective.
●Keep things fresh.
Instead of focusing on one single task for the entire study session, try mixing things up. Study a little grammar, then do a short listening exercise, then perhaps read an article on the same topic. Don’t do too much.
●Read, watch, and listen.
Reading English-language newspapers and books, listening to music, or watching TV can also help you improve your written and verbal comprehension skills. By doing so repeatedly, you’ll begin to unconsciously absorb things like pronunciation, speech patterns, accents, and grammar. Keep pen and paper handy and write down words you read or hear that are unfamiliar.
●
Even advanced students of English can struggle to learn prepositions (介词), which are used to describe duration, position, direction, and relationships between objects. There are literally dozens of prepositions in the English language (some of the most common include “of” “on” and “for”) and few hard rules for when to use them. Instead, experts say, the best way to learn prepositions is to memorize them and practise using them in sentences. Study lists such as this one are a good place to begin.
●Write it down.
Repetition is the key as you’re learning English, and writing exercises are a great way to practise. Take 30 minutes at the end of class or study to write down what happened during your day.
A.Practise your prepositions. |
B.20 minutes on three different exercises is plenty. |
C.There are a number of words in the English language. |
D.Some words are spelled differently and have different meanings. |
E.Then, do some research to learn what those new words mean. |
F.It doesn’t matter whether you use a computer or pen and paper. |
G.As little as 30 minutes a day can help you improve your English skills over time. |
【推荐3】How to Learn English Well
All English learners want to improve their English, but as you know, it can be difficult! For you, you need to work on all areas. The four main areas for you are: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Here are some ways to help you learn well.
Speaking
Speak as much as possible! This is the best way to learn English.
Listening
Like speaking, it's better for you to be in a totally Englishspeaking environment. It's also good to watch TV shows, or movies in English.
Reading
Reading English is something you can do to help you learn on your own, outside of the classroom. Newspapers are good for higherlevel students. So for lower levels, try reading children's stories or books which have been especially written for English learners.
Writing
Try keeping a diary; write something in English in it every day, even if it's very simple.
A.Make a plan for yourself. |
B.You won't learn much if you choose a book that is too difficult or too easy. |
C.The English news can be difficult for you at first. |
D.Start with small sentences and make them longer. |

【推荐2】It was 3:21 a.m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking (爆烈声) of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin Long Island.
With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, fell down onto the lawn.
The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy stayed calm and, as a fireman said later, "acted with all the self-control of a trained adult."
On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.
First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.
He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?
Grasping firmly a ball of string (线) from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother’s room. Tying one end of the string to her hand, he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.
Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, "The string will lead you to mother." Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

Waiting for Eden by Ellion Ackerman
This brief novel, which is published by Knopf, is related by a dead soldier who is watching over a horribly burned partner in a Texas hospital. That sounds embarrassingly emotional, but Ackerman, who served in a navy in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the best soldier writers of his generation.

Chung, the editor of the literary magazine Catapult, was adopted as a baby by a family in Oregon. In this memoir, she writes about her childhood, her Asian-American identity and her search for the Korean parents who gave her up. It is published by Catapult.
Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver
Alternating between past and present, this novel tells the story of a woman investigating a late-19th-century science teacher who was caught up in the controversy (公开争论) over Darwinism. The transition will take several years and existing animal shows will receive government support to switch to a new model, Environment Minister Barbara Pompili told a news conference, "Today. I announce the progressive end of the presence of wild animals in travelling circuses, a ban on the presence of orcas and dolphins in dolphinariums not adapted to the needs of marine mammals, and the end of mink farming for fur," she said. Guangdong province is set to make swimming lessons compulsory in primary schools staring from 2020, proposing the courses should be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Forum (论坛) readers share their opinions.

In Poland swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. I think that when it is only possible-there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a lifesaving skill.
Mister Panda (France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory (dating back to Charlemagne!). I even got my lifesaving certificate in school.
Boilermaker (Expert in China)
There are swimming lessons in my city, but I was very disappointed in how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one hour lesson practicing strokes on dryland. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents scolded the children, telling them they weren’t paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures.
Yunzhang (China)
It is a pity that many Chinese: athletes have won world championships in swimming while most schools don’t have the swimming facilities.
