Wildlife Crossing Bridges
The Wildlife Bridge
In 2018, Utah built a wildlife bridge over the busy highway 1-80. A 4.8-kilometer fence was created to help guide animals to the bridge. Normally, animals take a long time to discover and begin using wildlife bridges, so experts didn’t expect the bridge to get much traffic for several years. But recently, they’ve discovered many different kinds of animals are beginning to move by using the bridge.
The Rope Bridge
On China’s Hainan Island in 2015, scientists created a bridge for Hainan gibbons that are the world’s most endangered primates and normally cross the forest by swinging high in the trees. But after a 2014 typhoon, landslides caused huge gaps in the forest, which were forcing the gibbons to make dangerous jumps. Scientists created a simple and cheap rope bridge, which settled the problem.
The Eco-Bridge
In Uttarakhand state in India, the forest department has built a special "eco-bridge" , made from all-natural materials. It’s 27.5 meters long and runs over one of the busiest highways in the area. Though the bridge is high in the trees, forest department workers hope the bridge will help smaller animals on the ground, too. Already, the bridge has gotten a lot of attention on the Internet, with many people taking photos in front of it every day.
The Park Bridge
The Phil Hardberger Park lies in San Antonio, Texas, and recently it has opened what they say is the largest wildlife bridge in the US. This bridge, unlike the others mentioned here, was built for use by both animals and humans. The park says they have already seen deer using the bridge.

Nowadays Hawadax is once again a noisy place. Roughly a decade after a successful effort to rid the island of its predatory rodents (捕食性啮齿动物), a mass of seabirds has returned. And the benefits have extended across the island’s entire seashore ecosystem, which is again full of diverse life. These findings, published in Scientific Reports, show that certain ecosystems can recover with surprising speed if given the chance.
“This study is an example of something positive that can happen when we humans take action to clean up after ourselves,” says Kurle, who is lead author of the study and a conservation ecologist at the University of California, San Diego. “It also highlights how everything is interlinked, especially in coastal systems.”
The greedy rodents colonized Hawadax after a Japanese shipwreck in the 1780s, and they quickly wiped out seabird communities. Kurle’s first findings, published in 2008, showed that the rats affected not just birds but the entire food chain — all the way down to algae (藻类). Without birds to eat seashore invertebrates (无脊椎动物), populations of snails and other species feeding on plants exploded and consumed much of the marine kelp (巨藻), which provides crucial habitat for other organisms. “Certain invasive species can have impacts beyond those that are most obvious,” Kurle says.
Those early findings inspired the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Island Conservation, to wipe out the rats by dropping poison on Hawadax. Kurle and her colleagues secured funding to survey the island 5 and 11 years after taking the action. They found that its ecosystem had steadily recovered and now resembles that of other Aleutian Islands that were never invaded by rats, with significantly fewer marine invertebrates and much more kelp cover.
“Very few rat-eradication projects have focused on the impact on marine ecosystems, so the Hawadax Island case is really noteworthy,” says University of Tennessee, Knoxville, ecologist Daniel Simberloff, who was not involved in the study. “This is a very cool, elegant result from an academic ecology standpoint and, of course, is important in terms of conservation.”

When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn’t leave Pilar.
As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing(嘶叫) and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life.
There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13-foot(4-meter) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped.
No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.

There is only one problem with monkfish: they are ugly. With their eyes sticking out and wide mouths full of sharp teeth, they are frightening.
In the Netherlands, fishermen who caught them used to throw them back. They are still usually sold without their heads, but the days of throwing them away are long gone. Japanese diners love the fatty liver; while Italians may still call them toad tails, that doesn’t stop them from eating the fish. People have been encouraged to eat more monkfish, as well as other unattractive creatures — in order to ensure the biodiversity of the ocean environment.
There are more examples for sea animals going from “purposely avoided” to “willingly consumed”. In America, lobsters used to be fed to prisoners — a result of their abundance but also, no doubt, because they are difficult to eat and look frightening. Not until the late 19th century did they become fantastic dish. Today they are so desirable that Maine, where most American lobsters are caught, has the images of these creatures printed on many of its vehicles.
Sometimes fashion goes the other way. Turtles were plentiful in early America, but in the 19th century they became fashionable: few foods were more recommended than turtle soup. Americans ate some species of turtle nearly to extinction. Yet today turtle-eating is more closely associated with remote and uncultured areas.
Among cooking choices, people prefer the rare and the beautiful one than the unattractive one. But such narrow-minded food choices can have bad results: some species may not survive human preference for them. Better to stare into monkfish’s eyes than to contribute to the permanent loss of a species.
1. How were monkfish treated in the Netherlands?A.They were abandoned by local fishermen. | B.They were popular due to their fatty livers. |
C.They were called toad tails from time to time. | D.They were considered a danger to the ecosystem. |
A.To stress its abundance in America. | B.To make a comparison with monkfish. |

Every summer, locals can often be seen standing on the edge of the cliffs (悬崖) throwing birds down. The birds they throw are called puffins (海鹦), a type of seabird. Puffins are the most common bird in Iceland, and the Westman Islands are the largest puffin habitat in the world. Every year in late spring, the puffin producing season arrives and the islands are filled with busy puffins.
However, in the past 20 years, these puffins have been slowly disappearing for various reasons, one of which has something to do with their nature. Each year, the babies are born and grow in the caves on the high sea cliffs. About two months later, they will leave the cave to seek food on the ocean by following the moonlight. But they always mistake humans lights on the ground for the moon, and eventually lose their way and crash into the town. They are too young to fly back to the ocean again. Unable to find food, they are left to wait for death.
Over time, the locals realized that freeing the young puffins at the cliffs could set them on the correct path. So a puffin patrol (巡逻队) made up of mainly local children was formed. Their mission is to search for lost baby puffins in the streets with boxes. flashlights and food on the nights of September and October every year. Once found, baby puffins will be taken to the cliff and set free to the ocean. Over the years, the puffin patrol has gradually become a tradition, working quietly for the protection of puffins.
In spite of the love and care of the children, the number of puffins has dropped greatly ind recent years due to climate change, environmental pollution and rising sea temperatures, So there is still a lot of angst about what their future will be like.
1. Why do the baby puffins always arrive at town?A.They try to search for food in town. | B.They lose their way during the flight. |

The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29, 2020, when a 46foot boat was repeatedly attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate (旋转) 180 degrees and having its engine switched off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On September 23, 2020, Spain’s government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in the 60mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the attacks have been occurring.
Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas’ behavior. Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefin tuna—the orcas’ primary food source—which has left the area’s killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. “I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages,” says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, USA. The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
However, Alfredo López, a biology professor in Galicia, Spain, thinks the attacks are defensive measures the orcas took to protect themselves against boat injuries. The researcher came to this conclusion after looking at the videos of a few incidents and noticing that two of the young killer whales involved had serious injuries. Hopefully, the experts will be able to find a way to restore the harmony between the animals and the humans soon.

On the other hand, according to one estimate, humans kill 100 million sharks every year. This statistics is a warning that many kinds of sharks may become extinct.
The killing of sharks is a problem for the whole planet. Sharks are apex predators, which means that they eat other species, but few creatures eat them. As sharks die off, the populations of animals that sharks consume will increase. This, in turn, means that the populations of the creatures that those animals eat will shrink. That includes some sea creatures that humans consume, such as shrimp. It also includes fish that eat algae, which can cause algae to spread so much that it damages coral reefs.
Reducing shark populations affect more than just the ocean. Ocean plants produce much of the oxygen on the planet. These plants can be harmed when changes in shark population upset the ecosystem.
Try to refuse shark products. Shark liver oil is used in many popular cosmetics. Pet foods, vitamins, energy drinks and leather goods can also be made from shark parts. And shark meat is sold around the world, sometimes under misleading names such as rock salmon or whitefish. Most sharks killed worldwide are hunted for their fins, which are used to make shark fin soup. The process is cruel: Fisherman cut the shark's fin off and then dump the shark back into the water, still alive. Then the shark dies slowly, sometimes over several days. Sharks breathe by swimming, so a shark that can't swim will die.
Sharks often die because they become tangled in nets meant for other kinds of fish. If you eat seafood, make sure it comes from fisheries that care for the oceans.
Many organizations try to protect sharks. They can teach you about these essential creatures and give more advice on how to keep them alive. These organizations also need your support to continue protecting these important creatures.

The study examined the home Internet use,well-being(幸福)and behaviour of 296,000 15-year-olds in 41 countries. More than one in four spent more than four hours per day online outside of school. The study found lower levels of well-being among students who spent more than six hours per day online. They were twice as likely as teenagers spending one and two hours per day online to report that they felt lonely at school. These ''extreme Internet users'' were also especially at risk of ''behaving in problematic ways at school, such as arriving late or skipping class''.
The report said, ''Lower levels of engagement(密切关系)with school may be connected to less sense of belonging at school. It is also possible that skipping class and arriving late for school are the consequence of lack of sleep among extreme Internet users. '' It adds,'' Parents, schools and health professionals can work together to watch and plan children's use of new media. ''
The study also found that countries that invest (投资)heavily in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools have seen no ''considerable'' difference in 15-year-olds5 achievement in reading, math or science tests. The study results suggest ''limited'' use of computers at school ''may be better'' than not using them at all. However, students who use computers ''very frequently'' at school ''do a lot worse in most learning outcomes''. The report says,'' In the end, technology can strengthen great teaching, but great technology cannot replace poor teaching. ''

But only two days after he arrived, Clyde went missing. He had dug his way under one of the walls and was nowhere to be seen.
The zookeepers set up cages inside the zoo, with plates of Clyde’s favorite fish in them, hoping to catch him.
Two days went by and still there was no sign of Clyde.
At last a couple saw Clyde at their house a whole kilometer away in Newtown. Clyde was hiding in an out-of-reach hole outside their laundry.
The zookeepers arrived and set up some more traps to try to catch him. But Clyde is a pretty smart otter. Twice he managed to get the fish out of a trap without being caught.
Five days after he’d escaped ^Clyde s days on the run came to an end when he was finally caught in one of the traps.
It was no good putting Clyde back in his old home---he’d only dig his way out again. So he and Bonnie were put into the zoo hospital. There was no chance of their escaping from there.
Meanwhile, the zookeepers were working hard to make Clyde’s old home safer. They put an iron barrier underground to stop him digging his way out. Then Bonnie and Clyde went home again.
But a month after his first escape, Clyde was out again. Once more the zookeepers came hurrying to catch Clyde. They found him by following the bubbles he made in the river nearby.
Nobody knew how Clyde had escaped. But this time he was only out for an hour. So back he went to the hospital again.
Poor Clyde. It seemed that he wasn’t happy at Wellington Zoo, even though he and Bonnie were getting on well together. The keepers didn’t like seeing him unhappy, so they planned to look for a home for him somewhere else.
