Decades ago, NASA asked experts to develop the "smell of space" in order to help prepare astronauts for the experience of outer space. Now, a perfume, Eau de Space, has attracted eager buyers.
According to the Kickstarter activity, which has been launched to sell Eau de Space, the history of the "smell of space" has been unclear owing to various accounts of its development. Ever since the first spacewalk, astronauts have been shocked by the smell.
NASA astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield said, "The only time you can smell space is when you come back from a spacewalk. As you open the hatch (舱门), there is a distinctive smell." Some astronauts and space tourists describe it as the smell of fruit, or burnt cookies. Astronaut Eugene Cerman talked of another smell he experienced: "The moon smells like spent gunpowder." The smell of space is so distinct that NASA reached out to fragrance makers to recreate the smell, according to NASA documents.
Now, the makers have cooperated with award-winning perfumers (香水制造者), and reported that they've secured commercial contracts to reproduce the smell based on astronauts' accounts.
At $ 29 per bottle, Eau de Space will help support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs for students. "For every bottle of Eau de Space you buy, we're going to donate $ 1 to a STEM program for low-income students. It's a big promise and isn't the best decision for a company trying to make a profit. But, imagine that a child who smells Eau de Space today is whipped up to become an astronaut, scientist or engineer," shows Kickstarter.
Eau de Space will be made in the UK employing low-income labor and environment-friendly practices, including zero manufacturing waste, according to the campaign. So far, about 11,000 people have become supporters.

In choosing their Chinese name, brands should consider something that is memorable, easy to pronounce and with no negative meaning in the multiple Chinese dialects, and that conveys a sense of the brand’s DNA. This can be a challenge for luxury fashion houses, as their name often comes with its own heritage(传统) and meaning. However, they also have the advantage that they may enjoy a certain degree of brand recognition in China.
Brands have three main options when it comes to choosing a Chinese name. The majority choose a simple transliteration(音译), choosing a series of characters with sounds that are closely similar to the pronunciation of the brand’s original name. For example, Dior’s Chinese name is“迪奥”(di’ao). The two characters, while meaningless in combination, respectively mean “to enlighten” and “mysterious”, a smart choice for this brand.
Since more and more Chinese people are travelling abroad and they tend to pick up a short form, for instance, LV for Louis Vuitton, brands might wonder whether it is even necessary to spend considerable time and energy coming up with an official Chinese name. Nevertheless, most marketers still advise that brands select an official Chinese name. “Although brands only use their English name on their shop front, they still need a Chinese name, as their customers, sales assistants and floor managers usually won’t use the English name,” argues Louis Houdart, CEO of China-based branding agency Creative Capital.
Houdart adds that it is important for brands to establish and popularize their Chinese name, otherwise they might run the risk of customers’ coming up with their own understanding and pronunciation, messing their brand’s image and leaving it open to copyright infringement(侵权).
1. What’s the bright side for luxury fashion houses while choosing a Chinese name?A.It’s possible for those brands to be recognized by Chinese customers. |
B.It’s lucky to decide a Chinese name that can be accepted by Chinese consumers. |
C.It’s easy for them to contain their heritage and meaning in their Chinese name. |
D.It’s unnecessary for those brands to spend energy choosing a proper Chinese name. |
A.Giving the name a short form “BV”. | B.Translating the name into宝格丽. |
C.Ignoring Chinese customers’ demand. | D.Sticking to the English name. |
A.Diane Von Furstenberg is usually referred to as “DVF” instead of a Chinese name. |
B.It is essential for brands to set up their Chinese name and make it understandable. |
C.Louis Vuitton has never meant to come up with an official Chinese name so far. |
D.Chinese consumers get fairly used to pronouncing those brand’s names in English. |

A study published in PLOSBiology analyzed data from 29 people who already had brain implants that monitored them for epileptic seizures (癫痫). As the participants listened to Pink Floyd’s song “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1,” a song which is “very layered,” and therefore is interesting to analyze, their implanted electrodes (电极) obtained electrical activity in several brain regions related to musical elements such as tone, rhythm, harmony and lyrics. The researchers then ran these data through an AI model to partially reconstruct what participants heard. The reconstructed melody was roughly complete, and the lyrics were unclear but recognizable if one knew what to listen for.
Beyond music, the results may be most useful for translating brain signals into human speech, which itself contains melodic differences, including tempo, stress, accents and intonation. These subtle differences “carry meaning that we can’t communicate with words alone,” Bellier says. The researchers hope their new model will improve brain-computer interfaces, devices that turn brain activity into synthesized (合成的) speech for those who can no longer speak on their own. “Instead of robotically saying, ‘I Love. You,’ you can yell, ‘I love you!” says the study’s senior author, Robert T. Knight, a cognitive neuroscientist.
The current model relies on surgically implanted electrodes. But as brain-recording techniques improve, it may be possible to gather such data with more sensitive electrodes attached to the outside of the scalp (头皮). For now the researchers hope to generate crisper musical playback by packing the electrodes closer together on the brain’s surface, enabling an even more detailed look at the electrical symphony the organ produces. “Today we reconstructed a song,” Knight says. “Maybe tomorrow we can reconstruct the entire Pink Floyd album.”

Aside from the convenience of being chauffeured (私人司机) everywhere by artificial intelligence ( AI), there’s the safety factor, not to mention how environmentally friendly driver-less electric vehicles could be. But there’s also another advantage—parking. It’s one that could have a vast impact on the look, feel, and function of the cities, and it could thoroughly change the crowded urban spaces.
“We aren’t going to need parking, definitely not in the places we have it now,” Alain L. Komhauser, a researcher at Princeton University, told Patrick Sisson at Curbed. “Having parking close to where people spend time is going to be a thing of the past. If I’m at the office, it doesn’t need to be there.” The extreme case of totally empty car parks and city streets with no stationary (静止的) vehicles would probably require people to fully let go of personal car ownership.
“Car sharing is already reducing the need for parking spaces,” Carlo Ratti told Curbed. “Self-driving vehicles will strengthen this trend and have a dramatic effect on urban life, because they will blur (使模糊) the distinction between private and public modes of transportation,” he added. “‘Your’car could give you a lift to work in the morning and then, rather than sitting useless in a parking lot, give a lift to someone else in your neighbourhood,social-media community, or city.”
In that case, we needn’t park our cars. They’ll park by themselves, so we would see a huge increase in the width of sidewalks, bike lanes, and space for any other kind of transportation.
In all likelihood, we won’t see these kinds of changes happening very soon. But it’s exciting to think of the benefits this technology could bring.

When Grayson Barron learned of such a tragedy in a friend’s neighborhood, the 18-year-old immediately jumped into problem-solving mode. The new pool alarm system he’s just developed sends out several types of warnings when someone or something splashes into an unguarded pool.
Grayson calls his floating system “The Buoy (浮标)”. The idea is to turn it on when no one is using the pool. A large splash will trigger its built-in sensors to send out a series of alerts——a flashing light, an alarm that sounds like a loud doorbell and a text to the owner’s mobile phone. You could be on the other side of the world and know if somebody has just jumped in your pool.
Grayson’s is not the first pool alarm, but the teen says others all have drawbacks. Some are very costly. Other floating alarms can become stuck in corners of a pool or lose balance. He wanted a low-cost option that was reliable (可靠的). Grayson 3-D printed the main part of his device, then attached sensors. They detect its direction and movements. He then equipped the device with a light, a speaker and a wireless network that can send texts. A battery, which is hooked up to solar panels, keeps the system charged for months.
While hard to design, the new system “is so easy to use,” says Grayson. “All I do is turn it on and throw it into a pool.” After that, he says, it just “does its thing”.

We all say or do something that we wish we hadn’t said or done. You may say something that accidentally hurts someone, or you may provide a service which doesn’t come up to the standards that a client or customer expected. You may feel that it was a genuine mistake which couldn’t be avoided. Rather than dwell on the mistake you should quickly try to remedy(补救) the problem. An effective letter of apology is an important part of that process.
For the content of the letter, just remember TABS-Timing, Action, Briefness, Sincerity.
The time of a letter of apology is important-it must be sent as soon as possible. Any delay in sending the letter will only worsen the problem. In this case “Better late than never” is not the best motto! The longer you wait before writing a letter of apology, the more it will seem that you have been forced into writing it.
Although it is important to recognize what has gone before, it is also essential to detail the action you plan to take to correct whatever you did wrong.
A letter of apology should be brief and the word “sorry” should appear no more than twice. Indicate that you are aware you are using it a second time “once again, I am so sorry for…” or “as I said earlier, I am really sorry about…”
1. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Advice on making fewer mistakes. |
B.Strategies for making an apology. |
C.Advice on writing a letter of apology. |
D.Importance of a timely letter of apology. |
A.don’t have to take the mistake you made seriously |

Findings released Thursday from the first-ever Health Care Affordability Survey from the Commonwealth Fund show 51% of adults between 19 and 64 years old said it was either very or somewhat difficult for them and their family to afford their health care costs, including 43% of people who reported having employer-based health insurance and 57% who had health insurance through a marketplace or individual plan.
About half of working-age adults with Medicare coverage and 45% of those insured under Medicaid (医疗补助) also reported having difficulty paying health care costs. Notably, 65% of working-age adults also said price inflation for other goods and services in the past year had affected their or their family’s ability to afford health care.
The survey, concerning a nationally representative sample of nearly 7,900 people 19 and older in the U. S., was conducted from mid-April through July of this year. It follows a separate analysis from research organization KFF that showed both health insurance costs for employer-sponsored plans and worker contributions to those plans ticked up in 2023.
The newly published analysis found that 38% of respondents cited affordability as the reason they or a family member skipped or delayed getting needed health care services or filling prescription medication in the past 12 months, including 29% of people with employer-based coverage, 37% who were covered by individual and marketplace health plans, 42% who had Medicare and 39% who were covered by Medicaid.
More than 6 in 10 people who lacked any type of health insurance said they or a family member delayed or skipped care because they couldn’t afford it. And among all those who reported skipping or delaying care, 57% said a health problem got worse as a result.

A new study led by the University of Gothenburg shows that the best trees for air purification depend on the type of pollutants involved.
Trees and other greener in cities provide many benefits that are important for the well-being of residents. Leaves and needled on trees filter air pollutants and reduce exposure to poisonous substance in the air. But which trees purify the air most effectively? Researchers from the University of Gothenburg have collected leaves and needle from eleven different trees growing in the same place in the Gothenburg Botanical Garden (GBG) to analyse which cub-stances they have absorbed.
“This tree collection provided a unique opportunity to test many different species of trees with similar environmental conditions and exposure to air pollutants,” said Jenny Klingberg, a researcher of the GBG
A total of 32 different pollutants were analysed, some of which are bound to articles of various sizes. Others are gaseous. This project has focused on paths (多环芳烃). In cities, traffic is the biggest source of these pollutants, which are released due to incomplete burning in engines.
“Our analysis show that different species of trees have different abilities to absorb air pollutants. Conifers generally absorb morn gaseous paths than broad-leaved trees. Another advantage of conifers is that they also act as air purifies in winter, when air pollution is usually at its highest,” said Jenny Klingberg.
“This study contributes to improving our understanding of the ability of trees to clean the air and which species are best at absorbing air pollutants,” said Jenny Klingberg. This known-edge is important for urban planning when designing sustainable cities. While trees and green-era can contribute to better air quality in cities, at the end of the day, the most important measure is to reduce emissions.

We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive the truck because Papa fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor.
When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in.
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while I played with Faye in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped. I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust.
All the birds flew away. “I must warn Papa,” I thought to myself. To avoid her panicking, I gently told Faye to go back inside where she would be safe, and then headed off to the field.
The storm hit so fast, and in an instant the day turned into night. By the time I entered the cow field the fine sand was whipping across my face. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back.
The dirt and sand stung my skin like a thousand bees. Although I was terrified, I refused to turn back. My dad was stranded and needed my help. Covering my face with one hand, I groped my way toward the truck and opened the door. First I tried turning the truck’s lights on and off, hoping that Papa would see them flashing, but the sandstorm let no light escape. Then I pushed the horn again and again, so Papa would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.
Suddenly, Papa’s face appeared at the window. My heart leaped with surprise and relief. He opened the door and climbed onto the seat next to me. He then pulled me into his arms and said, “Oh, Iris, you saved me!”
Finally, the wind subsided and the dust began to settle. Dirt was piled up to the window on one side of the truck and halfway up the door on the other. Papa kicked against the door, opening it far enough to let us out.
Sand and soil drifts were everywhere, but we were safe.

The most powerful woman in the world, according to US Forbes magazine, was in China last week. She came to discuss trade and environmental issues with China's top leaders. Germany's first woman leader is known as a brave and practical statesman (政治家).
Even since her time at school, she had the habit of getting everything in order. Every day before doing her homework she would clean the desk and think about what to do next. "I prefer a long time for full preparations to make my decision. But once I decide, I will stand up for what I believe, "Merkel said. Perhaps it was good habits that helped her do well in her studies. At 32, she got a doctor degree in physics and then she worked as a researcher.
However, the life of a scholar couldn't put off her love of politics. While working in labs, Merkel took time off to read political books and at last joined a political party. "Her calmness helped her stand out in the party. She could always find a way out while others felt hopeless," said one of her old friends.
In her first big political job as Minister for the Environment in 1994, her scientific background proved very useful. In 2005 she became Germany's youngest prime minister since the second World War.
Now half way through her four-year term, the 53-year-old woman has made a name for herself both in Germany and abroad. At the EU summit (欧盟峰会) in 2005 when France quarreled with Britain over the EU budget (预算), some people believed the EU was close to breaking down. But Merkel didn't give up. She shuttled (穿梭) between the heads of the two powers and had them reached an agreement.
"Strength comes from composure (镇定) and courage. Many people say I am a strong woman. But I would rather say I have perseverance, "said Merkel.

What is surprising is that gift-givers have considerable experience acting as both gift-givers and gift-recipients, but nevertheless tend to overspend each time they set out to purchase a meaningful gift. In the present research, we propose a unique psychological explanation for this overspending problem — i.e., that gift-givers equate how much they spend with how much receivers will appreciate the gift (the more expensive the gift, the stronger a gift-recipient’s feelings of appreciation). Although a link between gift price and feelings of appreciation might seem intuitive (凭直觉得到的) to gift-givers, such an assumption may be unfounded. Indeed, we propose that gift-receivers will seldom tend to base their feelings of appreciation on the significance weight of a gift than givers assume.
Why do gift-givers assume that gift price is closely linked to gift-recipients’ feelings of appreciation? Perhaps givers believe that bigger (i.e., more expensive) gifts convey stronger signals of thoughtfulness and consideration. According to Camerer (1988) and others, gift-giving represents a symbolic ritual(礼节), by which gift-givers attempt to signal their positive attitudes toward the intended receiver and their willingness to invest resources in a future relationship. In this sense, gift-givers may be motivated to spend more money on a gift in order to send a “stronger signal” to their intended receiver. As for gift-receivers, they may not consider smaller and larger gifts as representing smaller and larger signals of thoughtfulness and consideration.
In practical terms, people spend hundreds of dollars each year on gifts, but somehow never learn to measure their gift expenses according to personal insight.
