I was born and grew up in the north of Scotland, which was not far from the sea. When I was little, I enjoyed the seaside scenery very much. I often sat on the rock by the sea and watched the view of the sea. I was fond of playing with the sand on the beach and chased the waves with my old sister, Alastair.

Across the beach there was a tidal(潮汐)island, which means that when the tide goes out, you can walk to it, but when the tide comes in again, you can’t get to it. Mum and Dad never let us go there. They told us that it was dangerous. However, the tidal island was full of mystery to me. I said to myself, “There must be some fascinating scenery worth exploring. How I wish I had a chance to land on it!”

On a little cold day in October, while my parents were away for a friend’s wedding, my sister was determined to take me to the beach near our house, where we would have a good time. I wanted to build sand castles.

When we arrived at the beach, the tide was out. We ran on the beach back and forth and enjoyed ourselves very much. With the help of my sister, I made several sand castles of different shapes. Feeling a little tired, I sat on the beach for a break. I saw the tidal island opposite, which looked very nice in the autumn sunshine.

“Let’s go to explore the tidal island, Alastair,” I said to my sister.

“That’s a good idea. But Mum and Dad said we couldn’t. Maybe we won’t return safely!” Alastair said.

“Don’t worry! We’ll try to return before the tide comes in again.” I begged Alastair.

Finally she agreed. We returned home and brought some peanut butter sandwiches and a bottle of milk with us.

Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were going to drive from New York to Virginia to visit relatives. She could not wait. She had missed playing with her cousins and talking to her aunt and uncle.

After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Joan’s dad looked to Joan and her mother. “Is everyone ready for our road trip?” They both grinned (露齿而笑) and nodded.

It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed that the car began to veer (突然变向) to the side of the road.

Joan’s father got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. He poked his head through the passenger side window. “We have a flat tire,” he said to Joan’s mom.

“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia,” she suggested. Joan’s father looked down at his feet sheepishly (羞怯地). “I ... haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”

Her mother seemed frustrated (沮丧), but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,” she suggested.

But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no reception in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly (茫然地) at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.

Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center.

Joan looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia? Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

One sunny afternoon in June, my sister Jenny and I were walking home from school when we noticed a loud chirping (鸟叫) coming from an empty rubbish can beside the road. We walked over to the can and looked inside. We were surprised to find a little sparrow (麻雀) was sitting at the bottom of the trashcan chirping sadly. His right wing stuck out from his body. Jenny said it was probably broken.

She reached in and cupped (捧着) the bird in her hands, comforting him. The bird chirped all the way to our house. My mom took one look at the bird and said, “No way! I’m not having another animal in the house.” But when she got a closer look, she felt sad about the bird.

Then Mom sent me into the bathroom for tape and gently set the bird on the kitchen table to get a better look at him. She said his right wing was surely broken, so she created a splint (夹板) and carefully taped it to the bird’s wing. Our dog, Buttons, kept trying to get close to the bird, but we pushed her away.

Once the splint was on, we fed the bird water and some bread. The little bird earned the name Peep. We kept him in a cage. Every night, we put a towel over the cage, and Peep went right to sleep. And every morning, we put his cage outside and opened the door so he could hang around and get some fresh air.

Peep couldn’t fly, which seemed to disappoint him. He wasn’t used to walking everywhere. Finally, Peep made friends with Buttons, and he would jump onto Buttons’ back for a free ride around the backyard. Days later, Peep’s wing got better. One night, Mom told us that it was probably time to take off the splint. With Mom’s help, we cut off most of the splint. He didn’t completely recover, so there were bits of white tape stuck to his wing, but he didn’t seem to mind.

Paragraph 1:

Peep started pushing his wing up and down crazily, wanting to fly.

Paragraph 2:

As it got dark, we believed that Peep would never fly back.

Early in the morning, Abbie, a cleaner, got out of her truck and loaded all the rubbish into her vehicle. She was about to leave when she noticed a stroller (婴儿车) in the middle of the road.

Wondering why a stroller was lying there with nobody around, she decided to approach it. When she looked inside, she jumped back, surprised to find’ twin baby girls sleeping in it.’ Abbie looked around again but didn’t see anyone. She knocked on a few nearby doors, asking if they knew anyone with twin baby girls, but no one did.

Finally, Abbie called the police and the CPS (儿童保护服务局) was called in, and the kids were placed in their care. “You didn’t find anything on the girls, ma’am?” Officer Barton whose wife was an art teacher asked. “No, ” she said. “But how can someone just give up such beautiful babies?” The officer said, “Thank you, ma’am. We’ll let you know if we come across anything.”

Abbie lived alone and had no children. That night at home, she felt terrible when she thought about the girls. What if something terrible happened to them?

Time flew by, and there was no information about the twins’ parents. Abbie was ready to adopt (收养) them. But when she got to the CPS, Barton told her, “So sorry that they’re deaf. People don’t want disabled children.”

“Who said that?” Abbie shouted, jumping to her feet. “ I will do anything to bring them up!” Hearing this, Barton felt moved.

Abbie named the girls Hannah and Daina. She didn’t even have separate beds for the girls, but Abbie loved them and began working two jobs to support them. Abbie was very happy that Hannah and Daina studied hard at school, and they were good at drawing models and clothes.
