Walking with a purpose

Humans were made for walking. With our strong leg muscles, our bodies were literally designed with walking in mind — which is what makes it such perfect exercise.     1     And best of all: it’s a great way to see new things and meet new people!

This month, why not focus on walking with a purpose? Wherever you are, in the city or at the campground, you’ll find plenty of walking going on. Maybe you already love to walk, but you’re getting tired of going your same old route day after day. Or maybe you’re new to walking and aren’t sure how to get started.     2     To get started, sit down with a map and make a plan. Ask yourself, what do you want to get out of walking aside from the health benefits? Do you want to meet other people?     3     Get out into the wild or explore a city? Knowing your priorities will help you decide on the type of walking you want.

If making trends and socializing is your goal, call up your friends and schedule walks with them.     4     Go online and look up your local mall or shopping center. Many malls have groups that come every day, or every weekend, to “walk the mall”. These groups are always happy to include one more walker!

5     Then tie up your shoelaces and prepare to get to know the place from the ground up! Many of our great historic cities offer detailed and well-planned walking tours. Nearly any city you can think of offers a walking tour with maps provided by the tourist bureau. And small towns generally have a special route that will carry you past its best boutiques, shops, and cafes.

A.See new places?
B.Head for a new city.
C.It’s good for our health.
D.Everyone loves walking and you’re no exception.
E.Ask your friends where they like to walk and go there.
F.Either way, it’s time to embrace the idea of walking with a purpose.
G.Ask local people to get you out of town and into the wild or countryside.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。在我们的人生中,我们可以选择很多的人生之路,但路通向哪里没有任何的保证,也许是通往成功之路,也许是通往失败之路,但无论如何我们都要勇于做出人生的抉择

【推荐1】Life is like a road. There are long and short roads; smooth and rocky roads; crooked and straight paths.

1     There are roads to happiness as there are roads to sadness, roads towards victory and delight, and roads leading to defeat and disappointment.

2     There are no guarantees. This is one of the most important thing you need to realize about life.

Nobody said that choosing to do the right thing all the time would always lead you to happiness. Loving someone with all your heart does not guarantee that it would be returned. Gaining fame and fortune does not guarantee happiness. Accepting a good word from an influential superior to cut your trip short up the career ladder is not always bad, especially if you are highly qualified and competent. There are too many possible outcomes, which you really cannot control.     3     Since life offers no guarantee and you would never know that your decision would be wrong until you have made it, then you might as well take the risk and decide. It is definitely better than keeping yourself in limbo(中间状态).     4     It is all a matter of perspective(客观判断力). You have the choice between being a lost traveler or an accidental tourist of life. But take caution that you do not make decisions haphazardly(随意地).     5

A.But do not regret it whatever the outcome.
B.Taking risks is not about being careless and stupid.
C.You do not really know where a road will lead you until you take it.
D.In our life many roads would come to our way as we journey through life.
E.Now that you have made a decision, be ready to face its consequences: good and bad.
F.The only thing you have power over is the decisions that you will make, and how you would act and react to different situations.
G.Although it is true that one wrong turn could get you lost, it could also be that such a turn could be an opportunity for an adventure; moreover, it may open up more roads.

【推荐2】How to Listen Actively

In the course of the last 20 years, I was a taker. Everything was all about me. But that has changed for me. I consistently look for ways to help others — personally and professionally.

I now focus on what the other person needs before my own needs as a way to build stronger relationships.     1

What is active listening? Active listening is an analytical exercise.     2     To make active listening more effective, you can also add complementary (互补的) skill sets. Mirroring what people have just said in your own words helps them feel heard and helps ensure your understanding is accurate. That is why active listening, not listening while doing, is essential for building better relationships with your team.

3     Learning to become an active listener requires you to slow down, have patience, and learn to ignore distractions (especially emails and texts). Techniques like reflective listening can help. If you are regularly repeating what has been said, you won’t miss any part of the conversation.     4     This helps build trust, making the speakers like you more and therefore more likely work on what you both agree on.

What will active listening do for you and your career? Active listening isn’t just about managing a team member or a conflict. Do leaders respond to the concerns and issues they hear from the staff? Do you have the skill set to actively listen and address them?     5     If you do it, you might just find your team or your organization is more adaptive than most ones.

A.I am able to do that when I stop talking and start listening.
B.You also show that the speaker has your full attention.
C.These are the questions employees are asking.
D.What should you do to benefit your speaker?
E.How do you become a better active listener?
F.It requires concentration on what is said.
G.Why do you want to be a listener?

【推荐3】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How do you work smarter and keep work-related pressures from getting to you? A number of possibilities exist.

1.Take a real vacation. Completely being away from work is one of the best ways to recharge your batteries. Any kind of change of scene will help. Taking a class, helping an elderly relative — anything that lets you get off the boring work will help you feel like yourself again.     1    .

2.Work out, no matter what. Giving yourself a pass from working out just because you have a busy day is a terrible idea.     2    . Exercise is a great help for stress. Burnouts become less common when you put yourself first for at least a little while each day.

3.    3    . Managers tend to reward their workers for their efforts, even if they are far from perfect. You should do the same for yourself and reward yourself from time to time, too. A movie, a gift for yourself — both add up to helping you feel good about yourself.

4.Create. Learning how to create in business or anything else can be a tremendous contributor to feeling in control. Identify a creative attempt to apply yourself to and commit yourself to it.     4    .

5.Learn to not be hard on yourself. Guilt is one of the most unproductive emotions that one can experience. If you have not been working as well as you would like, being severely self-critical will not help you improve.     5    . Determining to never be addicted to guilt or self-criticism can immediately help you feel better about life and work.

A.Value the rewards of managers
B.You will quickly begin to feel better
C.If you were the boss, you would reward yourself
D.Then, you can go back to working as hard as ever
E.Therefore, getting rid of such an idea proves important
F.Rather, it will only make you feel as if you will never do better
G.You will simply find yourself giving up your workouts all the time
