Elephant Trunk Hill lies     1     two rivers meet, one of them is the famous Li River of

Guilin city in Guangxi, and it is the symbol of Guilin. The hill was     2     (former) named Li Hill and resembles (像) a giant elephant standing in the river, drinking water through its trunk. Thus, the mountain was named Elephant Trunk Hill.     3     (date) back to as early as the Tang and Song dynasties, the hill has been a famous tourist     4     (attract) over 1,000 years of history. The scenic area combines unique rocks, beautiful waterways, special caves and numerous cliff stone carvings, which make it enjoy a high reputation worldwide.

A couple of years ago, on one of     1     hottest days of the year, I was pulling my car into my home when I saw a man cutting the grass at the bank next door. I didn’t know him, but I     2     (realize) he needed a cold drink. I    3     (quick) went in the house and took a drink     4     my fridge and went back outside. Then I stood on my sidewalk where he could see me when he turned the mower (割草机) around. I held up the drink and pointed to him. He nodded. When he came over to accept the bottle from me, he thanked me again     5     again and said he was just now considering     6     (go) to the nearby gas station to get something to drink. Ever since that day, he     7     (do) a lot of things for me. He often cuts the grass around my sidewalk, and gives me good     8     (suggestion) whenever I need help. However, he refuses     9     (take) any pay for all these things. He just shakes my hand and gives me a smile each time. I’ve been repaid in     10     (kind) so many times.

I learned a few lessons from a street dog yesterday evening.

I was eating something at a roadside vendor (摊贩)     1     a dog came and sat beside me. He looked     2     me and waited for my charity (施舍). I finished     3     (eat) and the dog was still waiting (first lesson: don’t lose hope). Then I went to a shop and came back with     4       bag of bread and some bananas. Now I had bread in one hand, banana in the other. But the dog was still waiting     5     (patient), not coming over to either of     6     (me) hands (second lesson: don’t force people for what you want).

And finally when I     7    (start)feeding it, the dog was waiting every time for me     8     (put) the bread in its mouth. I could see that it was hungry but it was taking care of my hand. The dog was waiting so that its teeth wouldn’t cause     9     (some) harm to me (third lesson: take care of it; it takes care of you).

Moved by my     10    (kind), the vendor invited me to have dinner with him!
