Matly Gregg, a 40-year-old former Apple engineer, needed a change in his life. So, he decided he would run across the country.

Gregg wants to run for office in 2022 in New Hampshire and hopes to get in touch with the “real America” by running 5,075 miles across the country before he does so. He is also trying to raise $ 1 million for Firefighter Cancer Support Network. “It’s a great conversation starter with complete strangers,” Gregg said. “I think we can raise $ 1 million, and I also think our firefighters are worth it, especially in light of what’s happening now in California.”

Gregg stated his run on November 6. So far, he has been averaging about 25 miles a day and has made stops in Santa Cruz and Salinas, California. “I’ve had this goal for a very long time, ever since the Terry Fox Story. That movie inspired me to start running as a kid, and running across the country. I always felt it would be something that would change my life.” Gregg said. “My family loves it. We’re all a little ambitious. My coworkers mostly think I’m crazy. My friends love that I’m taking a different path to my life knowing that I was very comfortable at Apple,” Gregg said. “But I see real places in this world where I can make a larger impact, and I need to get out there and learn more before I can help.”

Gregg recently purchased his childhood home on his 40th birthday — the house had been off the market for 20 years. “The idea that I’m running back to it keeps me motivated every day. My father passed away when I was young, and he built that house,” Gregg said. “I’ve only spent two days in it (I haven’t slept in it yet), and I can say nothing will make me more thrilled than the moment when I am to go back to it to explore.”

【推荐1】It's not often to see a woman who’s seven months pregnant running a marathon. But Beatie Deutsch is anything but typical.

The 30-year-old mother of five is ranked as one of the top women marathon runners in the world and, as of today, has qualified for the 32nd Summer Olympics. What impresses people more deeply is that, unlike many Olympic hopefuls who have been training their whole lives, Deutsch only took up running four years ago.

Why did she train for a marathon? "I was really out of shape after having five kids," she said. "So I set the goal for myself of running a marathon and that helped me. I needed something to be motivated to get out there and train every day. I didn't ever expect it to take me to this."

The Israeli press has been tracking her with pride, calling her "Speedy Beatie". Hoping to add more purpose to her newfound fame, Deutsch uses her running as a way to raise money for a charity Beit Daniella. This nonprofit organization provides a recovery center for youths who are struggling with mental health issues.

That mission(使命)is helping fuel her Olympic dreams. At the Tiberias Marathon last month, Deutsch was the fastest woman in the race. This past September, she finished the Cape Town Marathon in two hours and thirty-six minutes. That's a few minutes shy of her personal best of two hours and twenty-nine minutes, a time that qualifies her for the Olympics. She will try to shave even more time off when she competes in the Rotterdam Marathon this April.

It's remarkable for someone who started her athletic career in her late 20s. "I always tell people to have big dreams, and set huge goals. Don't get caught up in the place where we are right now and have tunnel vision and are limited in what we see of ourselves," said Deutsch, who now travels the world as a motivational speaker.

1. What is the main reason for Deutsch's being impressive?
A.Her typical birth place.B.Her five lovely children.
C.Her identity as a marathon runnerD.Her short time involved in running
2. Which word can best describe Deutsch?
A.Creative.B.Caring.
C.Modest.D.Adaptable.
3. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 5
A.Deutsch’s dreamB.Deutsch’s mission
C.Deutsch's achievement.D.Deutsch's shy personality.
4. What lesson is the author most likely to share?
A.Life lies in movement.B.Dream big and aim high
C.Interest is the best teacher.D.Wealth is nothing without health.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍的是J. K. Rowling在好朋友Sean的鼓励下,成功创作了《哈利·波特》系列小说。
【推荐2】        Success is often measured by the ability to overcome adversity. But, it is often the belief of others that gives us the courage to try.
       J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at age 6. In her biography, she remembers with great fondness when her good friend, Sean, whom she met in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Despite many setbacks Rowling persevered in her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn’t until l990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls, it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into my head. To my immense frustration (沮丧), I didn’t have a functioning pen with me, and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one. I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother passed away after a ten-year battle with multiple sclerosis, which deeply affected her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time, Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression. Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by l2 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
