How are you doing? I have made new friends at senior high school here, and there’s a lot     1     (explore). I met challenges during the first week. First, I had to think very     2     (careful) about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the     3     (suit) ones. He recommended that I     4     (sign) up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it. Second, I had to choose extra-curricular     5     (activity). I tried to join the school football team,     6    the coach said I wasn’t good enough. I joined a volunteer club instead. Lastly, I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to     7     (be) responsible for a lot more. For     8     National Holiday, I travelled to Peru with my parents. I really enjoyed the tour in the Amazon rainforest. We spent one day travelling by boat to     9     (we) accommodation (住处) in the middle of the rainforest, and three days exploring the rainforest     10     a local guide (导游) and enjoying the plants and animals unique to the rainforest.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian’s hopes. The school was much smaller than he     1    (expect), with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground     2     got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more     3    (challenge) than he had thought. We always try to convince     5    (we) that if we copy their success story then we will be naturally end     6    with the same success. This isn’t true at all. It’s their experience that made them what they are. You can’t repeat that. Once I     7    (open) a firm to make electronic devices, and I regarded Bill Gates as my role model. I had thought that years later I would be as successful as him. But the result was just contrary to my     8    (expect), and I failed. As time went on, I realized that different persons have different strong points, abilities and capabilities. So stop     9    (try) to copy others’ experiences, but build your own. Enjoy what life throws at you and make the     10    (well) out of it.

On our way to the house, it was raining     1     hard that we couldn’t help wondering how long it would take     2    (get) there. It was in the middle of Pearl City.

We were first greeted with the barking by a pack     3     dogs, seven to be exact. They were well trained by their masters     4     had great experience with caring for these animals. Our hosts shared many of their experiences and     5    (recommend) wonderful places to eat, shop, and visit. For breakfast, we were able to eat papaya(木瓜) and other fruits from their trees in the backyard.

When they were free from work, they invited us to local events and let us know of an interesting     6    (compete) to watch, together with the story behind it. They also shared with us many     7    (tradition) stories about Hawaii that were     8    (huge) popular with tourists. On the last day of our week-long stay, we     9    (invite) to attend a private concert on a beautiful farm on the North Shore under the stars,     10    (listen) to musicians and meeting interesting locals.
