It was a long way up the humble zipper (拉链) to become the mechanical wonder that has kept our lives “together” in many ways. The zipper had passed through the hands of several gifted inventors, though none _________ the general public to accept the zipper as part of everyday life. It was the magazine and fashion industry that made zipper the popular item it is today.

The story began when Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent (专利) in 1851 for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure.” However, it didn’t go much further beyond that simple _________ description.

Perhaps it was the success of the sewing machine, that stopped Elias from _________ marketing his clothing closure system. As a result, Howe missed his chance to become the _________ “Father of the Zip.”

Forty-four years later, inventor Whitcomb Judson marketed a “Clasp Locker” device _________ to the system described in the 1851 Howe patent. Being first to market, Whitcomb got _________ for being the “inventor of the zipper.” The clasp locker was released at the 1893 Chicago world’s Fair by his universal fastener (扣件) company and was met with little _________ success. Not many products were sold at that time.

It was an electrical engineer named Gideon Sundback who helped make the zipper the hit it is today.

_________ hired to work for the Universal Fastener Company as an ordinary employee, Sundback relied on his excellent design skills to rise to the position as head designer. When Sunback’s wife died in 1911, the sad husband busied himself at the design table focusing on the _________ of the fastener. In December of 1913, he came up with what would become the __________ zipper. __________, it still took 20 more years to persuade the fashion industry to seriously promote the new closure on clothing.

In the 1930s, a sales campaign began for children’s clothing featuring zippers. The campaign advertised zippers as a way to promote __________ in young children as the devices made it possible for them lo dress by themselves. And Esquire magazine declared the zipper the “Newest Tailoring Idea for Men.” saying it would __________ “the possibility of unintentional and embarrassing dressing moments.”

Today the zipper is everywhere and is used in clothing, luggage, leather goods and __________ other objects. Thousands of zipper miles are produced daily to meet the needs of consumers, __________ the early efforts of the many famous zipper inventors and developers.

The fastest speed ________ reported was 3Gbit/s, achieved earlier this year in Germany. Chinese researchers also claimed this month to have produced a 150Mbp/s connection, but some experts were doubtful without seeing further ________.

The term Li-Fi was ________ by Edinburg University’s Prof Harald Haas thought the technology is also known as visible light communications(VLC). Many experts claim that Li-Fi represents the future of mobile internet ________ its reduced costs and greater efficiency compared to traditional Wi-Fi. Both Wi-Fi and Li-Fi transmit data over the electromagnetic spectrum, but ________ Wi-Fi utilizes radio waves, Li-Fi uses visible light. This is a ________ advantage in that the visible light is far more plentiful than the radio spectrum(10,000 times more in fact)and can achieve far greater data ________. Li-Fi signals work by switching bulbs on and off ________ quickly---too quickly to be noticed by the human eye. This most recent breakthrough builds upon this by using tiny micro-LED bulbs to ________ several lines of data in parallel. The research was carried out by the Ultra Parallel Visible Light Communications project, and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Existing LED light bulbs could be ________ to transmit Li-Fi signals with a single microchip, and the technology would also be of use in situations where radio frequencies cannot be used for fear of ________ with electronic circuit. And although Li-Fi bulbs would have to be kept on to transmit data, the bulbs could be ________ to the point that they were not visible to humans and yet still functional. One draw-back is that the data receiver would have to be in sight of the transmitter-bulb as visible light does not ________ solid materials.

The makers of Li-Fi note that this quality might actually be an advantage in some ________, making Li-Fi more ________ than Wi-Fi with hackers unable to access unsecured internet connections from out of sight of the transmitter.

【推荐3】There is a saying, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (奉承).” This may be true, but in the art world fakes are unaccepted, to say the least. _______, selling fake art can be a criminal offense. When a painting is discovered that might have been painted by one of the great masters, it causes a sensation in the art world. However, for every great work, there are many fakes. There are also _______ imitations, paintings that were created in the style of a master painter and later _______ attributed to the master himself. Scientists are working on new technology that may aid art _______ in answering the question: Masterpiece or masterful imitation?

Most master painters have had their works imitated over the years, and even the experts have been _______ by some of these imitations. The National Gallery of Scotland once reportedly had an exhibit of five paintings of the same subject, all attributed to Leonardo. It turned out that at least three of the works were _______. Today, by some estimates, 15 percent of the art sold at auction houses may not be authentic.

Art historians, with their knowledge of the works of a particular artist, are often asked to authenticate art. _______ their knowledge of the subject, these scholars use science and technology to _______ if a work of art was created by a particular artist. The materials used in the painting are often _______ and X-rayed. Now, art historians may have another technological tool to help their process.

Scientists have developed a new authentications technique that analyzes and classifies paintings based on a digital analysis of the artist’s style. The process works by finding the consistency and ________ in an artist’s work. In an experiment, the model automatically identified the authenticated works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, ________ them from five imitations. Stuart Fleming, author of Authenticity in Art, thinks the technology could “revolutionize ________ of many sincere imitations.”

Nonetheless, some art historians are ________ about the new technique. “It’s an interesting idea. But before curators and art historians will jump in and use this, I think a much larger sample of work has to be tested,” said the curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

For now, museum curators and auction houses don’t seem as interested in the technology as the scientists are. There may be a(n) ________ reason for that. “If you spent 80 million dollars to buy a painting, I don’t think you’d be eager to know that it’s a fake,” Farid said. “It’s a dirty little secret that a lot of paintings are not ________.”
