My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking picture birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small,     1     (move) aimlessly.

Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward     2     (frighten) away its enemy but suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back --- the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably     3     hunger.

I held my camera tripod(三脚架)in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across     4     mouth. It bit down and I found myself     5     (support) its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win; I was all that stood between the bear and my family,     6     would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face: the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I     7     (strike)the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and grasped its fur,     8     (try) to push it away. I was actually wrestling with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack -- The first time I felt panic.

Apparently     9     (satisfy) that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us     10     hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.

Da Mao and Er Shun, two pandas sent to Calgary Zoo in Canada in 2014, are being sent back to China two years ahead of schedule. The animals feed on fresh bamboo,    1    is especially flown in for them from China. Some joked that the pandas are "leading too luxurious a life”. But with the pandemic(流行病)    2     ( disturb) flights, fresh supplies have got delayed. According to the zoo staff, pandas are picky eaters and will reject bamboo that     3           ( spend ) a lot of time in transport.

The pandas are     4    (possible) just two out of hundreds of animals who might be suffering because of the pandemic. In April, CNN reported that financial issues were forcing Neumunster Zoo in Germany     5    ( kill) some animals to feed the others;similar things     6     ( report) from the United Kingdom and other countries too.

Our focus is on human welfare all the time, but animal welfare should not take     7    back seat. So, we should say they are fortunate enough to have a hometown to return to when faced with difficulties. It is     8     China has successfully controlled the outbreak that it can consider getting the pandas back and providing fresh bamboos    9    them. In fact, resumption of flights, reopening of zoos and returning home can be     10    (benefit)to millions of animals. It is hoped that other countries control the epidemic soon so that all animals can benefit.

Wildlife Secrets of Nigeria’s Last Wilderness

Researchers from Chester Zoo, working with the Nigeria National Park Service, surveyed over 1,000 square kilometres of the national park. Known     1     its mountain rainforests and rolling grasslands, it is home to some of West Africa’s most threatened animals.

The cameras     2     (spot) some animals that have never been recorded before in the area and others, like chimps(黑猩猩),     3     are rarely seen. Stuart Nixon, the Africa Field Programme Co-ordinator at Chester Zoo, said confirmation of the locations of chimps was an important discovery. “Gashaka’s been regarded for many years as     4     (have) the biggest population of this Nigeria-Cameroon chimp,” he said. “We consider it the most important population—that’s really     5     we need to count it and see what the status of the chimp is right now—that will eventually affect what we know about this subspecies elsewhere.”

The chimp     6     (endanger) across its range in Cameroon and Nigeria. Its total population is down to fewer than 9,000 individuals, of which about 1,000 are thought     7     (live) within the borders of the national park. “It’s an amazing tool to use these camera traps and to reveal that this park—which is a     8     (forget) wilderness, really, for Nigeria—still has a really important store of important species for Nigeria and Africa in general,” said Stuart Nixon.

Chester Zoo is funding guards for the rangers and providing training in wildlife monitoring and protection. “This work is helping us learn more about the secrets of one of our last wilderness areas and we must continue to work together to ensure     9     survival for future generations,” said Stuart Nixon, “     10     all this beauty were lost, it would be a terrible tragedy for all.”
