Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “ While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician (儿科医生), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can beef up (加强) their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors ranging in age from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai chi, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是一些冬季运动对身体的影响。

【推荐1】If you have watched the amazing Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, chances are that you have fallen in love with some winter sports and you’re already making sure your equipment is ready for them.     1     However, there’s another element to get ready for the slopes (坡)—your body. Even if you exercise regularly, skiing, snowshoeing or skating challenges your muscles in ways other activities don’t.

Exercising in the cold decreases your body temperature.     2     Your heart and lungs also need to work harder to warm air before it enters your body. Depending on the sport, certain muscles may also be used more frequently compared to activities in other seasons. The good news is that most winter sports involve heart endurance (耐力), muscle strength and muscle endurance.     3

4     Skiing and snowboarding are great winter sports that provide a total body workout. However, it can be hard on the body the first time you hit the slopes. As anyone who has spent time skiing or snowboarding can prove, after a long day on the slopes, the body becomes extremely tired. And that is when injuries are more likely to occur.     5     Before the winter season, a regular exercise program should include exercises that get the blood running while challenging the entire body, such as stair climbing or running. The intensity should vary from 20—45 minutes at least 3 to 5 days a week. As winter nears, adding a cardio (有氧的) workout longer in duration but lower in intensity can help increase endurance.

A.Maybe you haven’t bought all the equipment.
B.To avoid this, you need to strengthen your body and improve endurance.
C.Your metabolism (新陈代谢) increases to warm you up.
D.You should take advantage of this opportunity to have a rest.
E.Probably, you have got your skis tuned and skates sharpened.
F.All of them are areas that can be trained before the winter season.
G.But there are still some other things to think about.

【推荐2】Weekend gym rats might be onto something. Weekend warriors, who put recommended amounts of exercise into one or two gym sessions(时段), experience similar health benefits to those who work out several times a week, according to a new study. And those benefits include a longer life. “It is encouraging news that working out in just one or two days per week is connected to a lower risk of demise, even among people who do some activities but don’t quite meet recommended exercise levels,” the lead researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis says in a statement.

The World Health Organization recommends that adults perform two and a half hours of moderate-intensity(中等强度的)physical exercise, or an hour and 25 minutes of more energetic exercise per week. Usually this is done within several days, with experts suggesting that adults get up to 30 minutes of regular exercise each day. However, the new study suggests that busy people may be able to meet the standards when they have more free time, such as at weekends, and stay healthy all the same.

Researchers studied data from more than 63,000 men and women in England and Scotland, including data about their activity habits and risks for death. The researchers put each individual in one of four groups: those who described themselves as inactive, those who exercised but less than what was recommended, those who exercised in the “weekend warrior” style, and those who worked out regularly more than three days a week.

Adults who exercised in the “weekend warrior” style had a 40 percent lower risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease and a 30 percent lower risk of death by any cause than those who did not exercise at all. The lower risks of cardiovascular disease and overall death were similar to the risks of people who worked out regularly over the week.

But take a pause before you give up your weekday gym habit. Just a couple of light sessions won’t be enough to get benefits: “Weekend warrior” exercise sessions are usually 75-minute energetic workouts, according to the study.

The results are promising overall, if you just simply can't fit physical activities into most days. The key here is that exercise is truly a lifeline(救生索): It reduces your risk of illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, cancer and depression, according to the WHO. So, if you are just too busy on weekdays, let go of the guilt(内疚). Just make sure to hit the gym hard at weekends.

1. What does the underlined word “demise” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.LossB.Death
C.SadnessD.Failure
2. What should “weekend warriors” do to get benefits?
A.Focus on moderate-intensity physical exercise.
B.Exercise to meet different physical activity standards.
C.Exercise for at least 75 minutes either on Saturday or Sunday.
D.Perform more energetically than those who work out regularly.
3. What can we learn from the study?
A.We should let go of our guilt.
B.Short but hard workouts help as well.

D.We’d better do our best to stay healthy.
4. After reading the passage, we can say that people should ________.
A.stop feeling bad about only exercising at weekends
B.take part in more energetic workouts than before
C.work out on both weekdays and weekends
D.give up their habit of exercise on weekdays

【推荐3】Exercise is an important part of staying healthy — both physically and mentally. Studies show that it can help strengthen the body’s natural defenses against disease.     1     For many people, it is also a part of their daily routine, making them feel better about themselves.

2     However, because of the current restrictions and social distancing, some ways of exercising have changed or are simply gone. So, people are changing how they exercise during this coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情).

Those who only exercise indoors might now consider moving their exercise routine outdoors.

3     “Simply walk outside in nature,” Khabbaza said. “People can use this as an opportunity to exercise in other ways.” But in areas with stay-at-home orders or enforced social distancing, exercising outside may not be as simple as it sounds.     4

Gyms, recreation centers and exercise studios are not open. So, some people are turning online to exercise. The physical fitness industry is also moving to online training. The Associated Press news agency contacted industry representatives and other people. Beth Berglin is the director of a charitable group in Miami, Florida. Before the pandemic, her exercise routine involved going to actual camp-style classes four mornings a week.     5     Instead, she is staying active through online classes.

A.So people fancy outdoor activities.
B.Now, the area where she trains is shut.
C.But exercise does not just keep us healthy.
D.Getting enough exercise at difficult times is vital.
