Some people love to read books. They can’t get enough of the    1     (print) word. Others have a big appetite for making and eating food. Well, if you are both an    2     (enthusiasm)   reader and eater, you may want to take part in an edible book festival,     3     you can have your book and eat it, too!

In such festivals, people create projects and present    4     to judges. There are two rules: the project must be made of food, and it must be based    5     a book. For example, someone might make the chocolate factory from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with chocolate bars.

Sometimes, judges award prizes for the best projects like “Best Pun.” A pun is a funny play on words that sound similar but have different    6     (meaning), like tale and tail. A possible    7     (win) for “Best Pun” might show Peter Rabbit, the character from The Tale of Peter Rabbit, with a tail made of marshmallow fluff (棉花糖).     8     (make) a pun, the project could be called “The Tail of Peter Rabbit”,    9     title punny enough to make the judges laugh!

Given the fun and often silly nature, it’s not surprising that many of these festivals    10     (hold) on April Fool’s Day!

Usually, when we talk about reading, we think of using our eyes     1     (see) letters written in ink on paper.     2     , this is not always true. For example, blind people cannot see, but they can still read books.

The man     3    (introduce) blind people to reading was Louis Braille. Braille lost his eyesight at the age of three as a result of     4     injury. When he was ten, he went to a school for the blind in Paris.

In 1821, a soldier visited the school and showed the students a system for passing     5     (message) at night during times of battle. His system used paper with small, raised dots     6     could be felt with the fingers. Each letter of the alphabet was represented by a different pattern which     7    (make) up of twelve dots. While the students found the soldier’s idea interesting, the system was too difficult to be     8     practical use. But young Louis Braille took the idea and worked on it. At the age of fifteen, he created a system --“Braille.”

The blind can     9     (easy) recognize Braille with the fingers. Today,     10     is the most common system for them to read and write.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

As a child, reading was one of my favorite     1     (hobby), and it still is to this day. I've always enjoyed immersing (使沉浸于) myself in the pages of a novel, entirely attracted by fictional characters and     2     (they) stories. One part of the experience that almost always made me feel    3     (disappoint), however, was when my beloved books became movies. And according       4     a recent survey, I'm not the only person who is let down by book adaptations.

SuperSummary, an online resource, wanted     5     (know) the answer to a burning question: Book or movie? The company asked 2,030 people, ages 23 to 62, to answer questions about books    6     had been turned into movies or TV shows.

The results were fairly close. Overall, 34% of people enjoyed the book,       7    (compare) to 27% of people who liked the movie more. Although 82% of people said “screen adaptations help books come to life,” 46% of people argued that movie adaptations “would never be as good     8     the book.”

Perhaps the slight preference for the book over the movie is related to libraries being a little     9     (popular) than movie theaters. I     10     (complete) understand why people might prefer watching a live version of a story on the big screen, but to me, there are few simpler pleasures than getting lost in the pages of a good book.

Despite its widespread     1    (recognize), my first impression was     2     Tuesdays with Morrie is just made up of a collection of over-emotional thoughts and messages, many of     3     are repeated. But thinking back, it did teach me a lesson or two. The book made me stop and think about how much I     4    (influence)   by popular culture and the     5    (important) of creating my own values based on love and open communication.     6     it isn’t my favourite book. I’d still recommend that people     7    (read) it - after all, it is something that’s a bit different!
