Core strength is important: we use it when we carry a bag of groceries, get up from the floor, push open a door and so like. But too often, we think of “core” training as something done specifically with sit-ups or planks(平板支撑).       1     It is because our cores do so much more.

If you do nothing but sit-ups, you’re being just as short—sighted as somebody who never does any core work because it’s boring or they “forget”.     2

Treat your core like any other muscle. When we train our arms, we get stronger and progress to heavier dumbbells. When we train our legs, we end up squatting (蹲) with more weight over time.     3     You wouldn’t do 100 curls with a 5-pound weight when the 25-pounder is right there. Find a more challenging exercise. You may have many more options.

Another thing we can learn from other types of strength training is that your core work doesn’t have to be an everyday thing. If you try a more challenging core move and find yourself ache afterward, you may be thinking “How can I do this every day? It’s too hard.”     4     It’s okay to do devoted core work two or three times a week, resting in between.

5     Sit-ups work the muscles at the front of our body. But our core includes a lot more than that. To hit all of these muscles, we’ll need to do different movements. It’s true that planks work pretty much everything in the body, so that’s a good place to start, but there are so many more options—not to mention that variety helps not just to relieve boredom, but also gives each muscle a chance to work hard without being limited by the strength of its neighbors.

A.And that’s a shame.
B.But the core isn’t just one muscle.
C.If you’d like to do more, you can!
D.So why would we train our core any differently?
E.So how can you make sure you’re hitting them all?
F.And there’s no reason you have to do it every day.
G.To become stronger, try thinking about it a little differently.

【推荐1】We already know that exercise is good for our bodies. Daily exercise fights the loss of muscle tone and flexibility that tends to increase slowly with age. And it turns out that it has the same fountain-of-youth effects on our brains.

Studies show that over time our minds also become less flexible and nimble. We lose the ability to process new information or switch between mental tasks quickly — and now we know why.

A recent study examined nearly 100 individual studies on exercise and brain function and discovered exercising an average of 52 hours over six months is "associated with improved cognitive(认知的)performance in older adults with and without cognitive damage." The type of exercises that are beneficial include aerobic, strength-training and mind-body.

In previous studies, researchers from Japan's University of Tsukuba wanted to explore this idea by looking at the effect of exercise on this weakening of the brain. They tested the oxygen ability of 60 Japanese men between the ages of 64 and 75 who did not show any signs of dementia or other mental symptoms. Next, they looked at the brain activity of each man as he completed a mental task. They found that the fitter a participant was, the less brain activity he used to complete the tasks when compared with his out-of-shape peers(同龄人).

Although much research is focused on how exercise may benefit an aging brain, exercise offers brain health benefits at almost any age, and this includes children. A review of 14 studies showed that more physically active schoolchildren do better academically. Exercise actually causes your brain to grow in size. So get moving and keep moving for best results.

1. Which of the following best explains “nimble” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Intelligent.B.Dull.C.Unique.D.Simple.
2. What can we infer about the participants’ less-active peers?
A.They had significant brain advantages.B.Their brains were younger than their age.
C.They didn’t have to attend health classes.D.Their cognitive performance would decline.
3. How does the author support his idea?
A.By making comparisons.B.By analyzing study results.
C.By describing the processes.D.By telling his own experiences.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Exercise is beneficial for your bodies.
B.Exercise is especially good for the old.
C.Exercise can benefit your brain health.
D.Exercise may lower your risk of mental problems.

【推荐2】Soccer legend: They told me girls couldn't play this game

Note: Michelle Akers was a player on the US Women's National Teams who won World Cup titles in 1991 (where she won the Golden Hoot as top scorer) and 1999.

(CNN) — In third grade, I shared my dream along with my favorite football with the class, and as I proudly finished my speech, my teacher responded, "Michelle, girls cannot play football" to which I answered, "Yes, I can." I wouldn’t let it go, landing myself in the principal's office, trying not to cry. Soon, my mom arrived. “God help me now,” I thought ... until I heard her say to both my teacher and the principal, “How dare you tell my daughter what she can or cannot do.”

On Wednesday, all the world (myself included) will watch the 2019 US Women's National Team — Women's World Cup champions. I'm also thinking about how they — like I — got to the place where they lifted that trophy. To me, the 2019 World Cup and above all, this team, has taken the stories and dreams of the USWNT full circle.

It goes like this: First, you dream. Next, you play. Then, you inspire a legacy.

So many years ago, I dreamed of being a Pittsburgh Steeler. But many of the players on this 2019 World Champion USA Team sat in stadiums or watched games on TV in 1999 and dreamed of playing for the USWNT. No one could tell them they couldn't — they could see for themselves that it was possible.

They have now not only won a World Cup, but have turned their dreams into action. Dreams of being the best in the world. Dreams of equality and equal opportunity. And the actions to back them up and make them real for the people who come after them. They are demanding respect and equality from the powers that be because they know what it is to achieve more than just a trophy.

That, for me, is so very powerful. What this 2019 World Champion team demands for themselves — and put first in their lives — will be their biggest message of change: Respect. Equal opportunity. Team and family. Individual choice. Excellence. Into a new era.

And I am grateful to be celebrating them in their much deserved ticker-tape parade in the Canyon of Heroes in NYC.

1. What's the attitude of Michelle's mom towards her dream?
A.Funny.B.Supportive.C.Ambiguous.D.Carefree.
2. What can we infer from Paragraph 2 about the 2019 Women’s World Cup?
A.Michelle is coaching and encouraging the team.B.Michelle together with her team won the trophy.
C.The team carries the same dreams as Michelle'sD.The team didn't fail Michelle's great expectation.
3. What happened to Michelle during her football career?
A.She set an example to women football players.
B.She won the Golden Boot in 1999.
C.She retired from her team in 2019.
D.She recognized inequality to women in football.
4. Which of the following can be a suitable title lor the text?
A.Dream, Play and InspireB.Woman Football Develops
C.Football Counts More than EverD.Equal Playing Field Is More than Men's

【推荐3】I imagine there might be a footballer or two who has woken from a terrifying dream where they can’t see the ball, or the coming opposite player. In the middle of the game, they’ve ended up lost, unable to momentarily know in which direction they are playing. Such is the usual world for players in blind football where getting the wrong direction on the pitch is only an occasional problem, quickly corrected.

Blind football is played worldwide, in England, in Japan, in China and so on. The rules are simple, the action fast. The ball is filled with ball bearings that make sounds as the ball moves, enabling the players to spot the ball very accurately—although if the ball is too fast or too slow, the sound becomes small and spotting it is harder.

It’s five-a-side, including a sighted goalkeeper but plus a “caller” for your team behind the opponent’s goal. All the players on the pitch wear a blindfold to avoid any potential cheating from anyone sighted or partially sighted. But many players are totally blind. For example, Japanese player, Yasuhiro Sasaki, can see nothing, though he was partially sighted when younger, when he was a fan of regular football. The “caller” is an essential aid to the players, calling out directions to the ball, and, importantly, distance and angle to the goal. A caller has to be quick-minded and train with team-members.

Now happily, many people come to blind football “from an interest in football foremost, rather than any interest in the disability.” All in all, blind football might become popular with more blind people.

1. The author mentions a terrifying dream in the first paragraph to ________.
A.introduce the fear a professional player may suffer
B.warn players not to get the wrong direction
C.describe the difficulties a blind footballer might have
D.analyze why a football game may end up in failure
2. According to the rules of blind football, which of the following is right?
A.There are five players on each team, including a caller.
B.The callers provide necessary information for the players.
C.The ball should be passed neither too fast nor too slow.
D.The caller is the only person who can see on the team.
3. Why do players wear a blindfold while playing?
A.To ensure an honest game.B.To keep partially blind players out of the game.
C.To make the game more exciting.D.To check that all players are totally blind.
4. Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?
A.A football game for the blind.B.A new way to play blind football.
C.Blind football around the world.D.How to play blind football.
