Most students do an IQ test early in their school career. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is what determines how well they are going to do in life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success is not simply the result of a high IQ.
While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone’s future success, their EQ might actually matter more than their IQ. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the smartest students in your class, who you think deserve good grades, sometimes end up failing exams? Perhaps their failure is because of their low EQ.
It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by problems. On the other hand, there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with difficult situations; thus they have a harder time surviving in life.
The good news is that most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education. Compared with IQ that seems to be fixed the moment you were born, EQ could be improved with right approaches. Some are trying to study the possibility of improving a person’s EQ, especially when it comes to“people’s skills”, such as understanding and communication.
To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means getting on with other people and being able to understand and react to situations in the best way. This requires a high EQ—the higher the better.

But making time to get outside in the sun, even when it's cold out, could have bigger mood benefits than you might realize. New research finds that sunlight exposure is by far the greatest weather-related factor determining mental health. In other words, more sunshine, more happiness.
For the study, a psychologist, a physicist and a statistician from BYU teamed up to compare daily environmental data from the university's Physics and Astronomy Weather Station with emotional health dataarchivedby day for 16,452 adult patients who were being treated at the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services. Other weather variables(可变因素) including temperature, pollution and rain were not found to have an impact on mental health.
“We were surprised that many of the weather and pollution variables we included in the study were not significantly related to patients' scores once we had accounted for sun time," said Dr. Mark Beecher, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author.
Exposure to sunlight is a significant factor in seasonal affective disorder. Research has shown that the brain produces more of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin on sunny days than it does on darker days. What's more, lack of sunlight is linked with lower vitamin D levels, which in turn has been correlated with depression and low energy.
In addition to seeking professional help if you need it, taking a walk in the sun can help. Walking in nature is known to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, lighten the mood and even put the brain into a peaceful state.

In the study, researchers at Michigan State University looked at 123 children who were about 7. The team assessed the children to determine whether they had a “growth mindset” (believing that you can work harder to get smarter), or a “fixed mindset” (believing that your intelligence is unable to change). They then asked the children to complete a fast-paced computer accuracy task while their brain activity was recorded.
Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with a growth mindset were much more likely to have a larger brain response after making a mistake, and in turn were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making an error.
While previous research has shown that people with a fixed mindset didn’t want to admit they had made a mistake, this study found that children with a fixed mindset were able to- “bounce back” after making an error, but only if they gave their full attention to the mistakes. “The main implication(暗示) here is that we should pay close attention to our mistakes and use them as opportunities to learn.” study author Hans Schroder told Science Daily.
For parents, the lessons are clear-if a child hands you an A+ test, don’t say “You’re so smart!”
Instead, say “Wow, that studying really paid off!” or “You clearly mastered this material-way to go!” Note the effort, not the intelligence.
Second, focus on using errors to work together and learn. Many teachers and parents avoid addressing children’s mistakes, telling them “It’s OK. You’ll get it next time...”,without giving them the opportunity to figure out what went wrong. Dr. Schroder says, “Instead, it’s better to reassure(安慰) children that mistakes happen, and to pay attention and work to figure out where and how they made the mistakes.”
1. How was the data collected during the research?A.By counting children’s mistakes. |
B.By recording children’s brain activity. |
C.By asking children fast-paced questions. |
D.By testing children’s intelligence. |
A.A boy who manages to correct every mistake by heart. |
B.A girl who believes her mistakes are made by chance. |
C.A boy who keeps an idea that he has a gift for studying. |
D.A girl who thinks she can get A+ without any effort. |
A.Giving examples. | B.Listing facts. |
C.Making a comparison. | D.Using famous sayings. |
A.Parents should avoid talking with child about his mistakes. |
B.Parents should discuss the mistakes with their child patiently. |
C.Parents should ignore the mistakes and believe he will do better. |
D.Parents should compare his mistakes with others’ and blame him. |

What is it about a dog’s loving gaze(凝视) that makes it so lovely? A new study by a scientist Miho Nagasawa seems to have found the answer. He found it has to do with something called the cuddle(拥抱) chemical. The cuddle chemical in the blood encourages connection. Levels of it increase, for example, when a parent hugs a newborn baby. According to Nagasawa’s study, levels of the cuddle chemical can also go up when we look deeply into the eyes of a dog.
In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team did an experiment. They tested levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact with each other.
While in the room, the humans petted the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs’ eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again. They found that levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they interacted. However, levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that simply looked into each other’s eyes, without much petting or talking.
Simply put, the longer the humans look into the eyes of the dogs, the more the cuddle chemical is produced. Nagasawa did the same experiment with humans and wolves, but it did not give the same results.

China is famous for its various hot pots, but the Japanese also love this delicious cuisine, where hot pots are known as nabemono. Here’re four tasty versions worth eating.
Shabu- Shabu
Many types of hot pots exist, but one of the most popular in Japan is called Shabu-Shabu. Featuring thinly sliced cuts of meats, fish and vegetables, the dish, whose name imitates the sound “swish swish” as the food is cooked in the boiling pot, is said to have been created in Osaka in the 1950s.The food is typically dipped in a sauce with a citrus(柑橘)flavor.
Chankonabe
Since the late 1800s, Chankonabe has been served to sumo(相扑)wrestlers looking to gain weight. Interestingly, there is no fixed recipe fr this style of hot pot. In other words, any type of meat and vegetables can be thrown in. It’s served in large portions, often with other food such as fried chicken so that sumo wrestlers can keep their significant body weight.
Mille-Feuille Nabe
A less fattening Japanese hot pot that has an attractive visual element is Mille-Feuille Nabe. Made with mostly pork and cabbage, it’s easy to prepare since this hot pot requires fewer ingredients(原料)than other kinds of nabemono. The remaining soup can also be enjoyed with steamed rice or noodles.
Yaminabe
Yaminabe is a dining experience like no other. Everyone brings their own ingredients to add to the pot,but with their eyes covered, they don't know what else is being added. Therefore,no one knows exactly what they’re picking out of the pot. Sounds like the ultimate surprise, doesn’t it.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to nabemono. These hot pots are just the start of a wonderfully delicious nabemono journey!

Finland
Finnish students are assessed based on their daily performances until they take the college entrance examination at age 18+. This consists of at least four tests: mother tongue and three other compulsory(必修)tests from second national language, foreign language, maths, and sciences/humanities. They can also take one or more optional tests like economics.
France
Lower secondary education ends at 15 when students take a lower secondary leaving exam, which consists of French, maths. civics education and history/geography together with continuous assessment from 13 to 15. After one year of upper secondary education, students can leave or continue their education. Those that stay on can choose from a diploma, a technical career or professional certificates.
North Korea
There is no national examination on completion of lower secondary education. But students may need to take an entrance-exam at age 15+ for some upper secondary schools. All students who wish to go to college have to take the national College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT). CSAT involves written tests in subjects: Korean, maths. English, social studies, science and professional education, and a second foreign language.
The Netherlands
At age 15, students enter the second cycle which prepares them for specific and differentiated terminal examinations. It includes three cultivation routes: pre-professional secondary education, senior general secondary education, and a pre-university qualification. All require common compulsory subjects like Dutch, English, physical education. And their differences lie in some special career options and study burden.
