I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren’t all that excited about getting any work done, and the experience was extremely stressful.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it.
“Let’s pick Hawaii!” said Cupcake. “Hawaii has super cute swimsuits.”
“That is so true!” said Cookie. “Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer sales happening right now.”
“Really? Maybe my mom will take me shopping this weekend,” said Cupcake.
I turned to Volcano. “Which state do you think we should pick?”
Volcano shrugged(耸肩). “I don’t care. But what happened to your hair, Arizona? It looks like it got caught in a blender(搅拌机)!” The rest of Volcano’s comments during the meeting were equally “helpful.”
At our next group meeting, no one seemed very eager to talk about our brochure, so I went ahead and shared the interesting facts I’d learned about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one said anything, so I pulled out my notebook. “Cupcake, you had offered to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. Were you able to find some?”
“I didn’t have time,” she answered, “but here’s a photo of me at the hotel pool in Hawaii.” I looked at the picture she had taped in her notebook and smiled. “You look great, but you probably don’t count as sea life. Cookie, you were going to find some historical information. And Volcano, you were in charge of Hawaiian geography, right?”
“I’ll do my part soon,” said Cookie. “I’ve been really busy lately.”
“Me, too. I’ve been really busy!” said Volcano.
I was getting the impression that no one but me planned to work on the brochure. “What am I going to do? Do I have to do all the work for everyone if I don’t want a bad grade?”

It’s two o’clock. The girls in Class 5C and their PE teacher were in the gym. They were waiting for Ruby. Where was she? Ruby was in the changing room. She hated PE. It’s her worst subject. Ruby is good at school, but she doesn’t like PE. She likes reading, painting, and playing her recorder. Ruby hated Thursday because there were two PE lessons in the afternoon.
Ruby can’t run very fast because she got tired quickly. And she can’t climb very high because she got dizzy. Sometimes the other girls got angry with Ruby when they lost a game because of her. Nobody wanted her in their team.
Ruby’s PE teacher is Ms Butcher. She often shouts, “Run faster, Ruby!” “Climb higher, Ruby!” “You can do better, Ruby!”
It’s ten past two. Ruby was still sitting in the changing room. Mr Butcher was in there, too. She was looking for Ruby. “Come on, Ruby. Your team is waiting for you. Today we are having a cross-country race.” The three other girls in her team didn’t look happy. They knew that they would be last, because Ruby was so slow.
Five minutes later, the race started. “ On your marks. Get set. Go!” Ruby was very slow and her team was last. “Faster, Ruby!” everyone shouted. They ran across a field and they ran over a bridge. But when they ran into the forest, Lily, a girl in the green team, slipped and fell down a hill. Some stones and a tree trunk fell down the hill. too. The girls in Lily’s team stopped running. Another team arrived, too. They didn’t know what to do. Lily’s lying at the bottom of the hill. There’s a tree trunk on her leg and her head was bleeding. Some girls cried, and others stood there in shock. They looked down at Lily but no one did anything.
Finally Claire asked, “Where’s Ms Butcher?” “She’s at the finish line, ”said Grace. “That’s too far! Run back and get someone, ”Emily shouted.

My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10,869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.

As I was leaving my fitness class one evening, my instructor called across the parking lot to me. “Hey! Jane! It looks like your muffler (消音器) under your truck is hanging kind of low!”
Honestly speaking, I didn’t like my instructor. The black birthmark on his face made him a little ugly. I just nodded, waved and climbed into my truck. Yeah, whatever, I figured. You’re the instructor. Worry about keeping my weight low, not about my muffler being low.
Then I was driving home, singing along with the radio when suddenly I heard: CLUNK! THUD! SCRAPE-RATTLE-RATTLE! At first, I thought it was part of the song, but then I realized it was a sound I had never heard in this song.
I looked in my door mirror and saw sparks (火花) dancing along the road behind my truck. I pulled off to the side of the road to have a look.
The muffler was fine as far as I could tell. However, the metal bracket (托架) that apparently held the muffler up under the truck had broken loose, and the muffler was resting on the pavement. I wasn’t sure what had caused this to happen.
I decided the best idea was to pick up the muffler and hoped that, somehow, it would stick back on the underside of my truck. Let me tell you, it’s surprising how hot a muffler can get in just a short drive.
Still blowing on my painful fingertips, I called my father and told him what was happening to his truck. “Whatever you do, don’t touch the muffler,” he told me. “It will be very hot.”
“If you can wait, I will call the garage to repair but you have to wait for half an hour. But you can also manage it by yourself,” he said.
“I can have a try. I don’t want to wait,” I said.
“Then you can find some ropes, and then climb under the truck to temporarily reattach the muffler.”
I searched the truck but the only thing I found was a spare tire and a pair of shoes.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a 3, 900-foot peak (山峰) near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia, I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the top. But I loved to challenge something bigger than myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met on the Internet. Two years ago, on 30 December when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to climb 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.
It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less danger of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 am, following the path alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about — 10℃. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau (高原) at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were terrible. My skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We checked our equipment and were prepared for the climb.
The way we followed grew narrower and steeper (更陡的), At around 9 am, we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. It felt good, Confidently, I thought I was safe. I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack (爆裂声), and a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
