From airplanes to apartments, most spaces are now designed with sound-absorbing materials that help decrease various sounds of everyday life. But most of the sound-absorbing materials that can cancel out human voices, traffic noise and music are made from plastic foams (泡沫) that aren’t easily recycled or degraded. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering have created a biodegradable film (薄膜) obtained from seaweed, which effectively absorbs sounds in this range.

Controlling and optimizing the way sound moves throughout a room is the key to creating functional spaces. Foam sound-absorbing panels are a common solution, and they come in a variety of materials and thicknesses tailored to specific sound requirements. Most of these foams, however, are made from a type of plastic material and other chemical substances that are obtained from natural oil or petrol. To avoid petrochemicals, researchers have explored more renewable sources and biodegradable sound-absorbing alternatives. But many current options are made from plant fibers that don’t effectively decrease noises in the most useful range of sound frequencies, or they are too thick or difficult to produce. So, Chindam’s team wanted to develop a biodegradable material from a plant, which would be simple to produce and could absorb a range of sounds.

The team created films of agar (琼脂), a material that comes from seaweed, along with other additives developed from plants and varied the thickness of the films. After running the materials through a battery of tests, the researchers measured how well the films reduced sound across a range of frequencies. To do this, the team created a sound tube in which a speaker is placed at one end, and the test film is fitted over the other end. Microphones in the middle of the tube measured the amount of sound sent by the speaker and the amount of sound reflected off the film. These experiments showed that the films with many small holes made with the highest concentrations of agar had the greatest sound-absorbing qualities and performed similarly to traditional sound-absorbing foams. The researchers plan to explore ways to change the agar films to give them other desirable properties, such as flame resistance, and will explore other biologically obtained film materials.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了气候专家和工程师创建了一个新的模型来预测极端天气造成的破坏,并说明其工作原理、意义和作用。

【推荐1】Newcastle University research is helping to prepare for and relieve storm damage before extreme weather occurs. Climate experts and engineers have created a new model to predict the damage caused by extreme weather. This new framework for “consequence forecasting” enables first responders to effectively target resources before an extreme weather event comes, such as Storm Eunice.

The pre-event decision-making model works by first developing relationships between wind speed and faults on the electricity network. The relationships are then used to estimate faults of electricity networks and potential customer interruptions. This model can be used as early as 24 hours before extreme weather events.

Published in the journal Climate Risk Management, the study findings can enable effective first response to manage infrastructure (基础设施) systems smitten by dangerous weather. Having the forecasting tools to predict and prepare for storm damage will reduce the social consequences of extreme weather, including power loss for customers and fines for electrical distribution companies.

Dr Wilkinson said, “Our model has the potential to change the way we manage weather and climate risks to our infrastructure networks. While electricity network operators already prepare extra resources when a storm approaches, predicting how many power lines may be blown down and where these are likely to be located will allow them to better target the necessary resources to more quickly repair any damage. This is likely to become even more important in the future as our changed climate is predicted to produce more frequent and more intense storms and some of these may be beyond the experience of the people tasked to deal with them.”

Study co-author, Professor Hayley Fowler, of Newcastle University’s School of Engineering, added, “This consequence forecasting is so important for planning emergency response in fast-evolving storms like Eunice. Our model could be used to regularly update energy companies and other infrastructure operators on the potential consequences of approaching storms as forecasts are updated in real-time.”

1. What can the new framework do?
A.Prevent extreme weather from happening.
B.Help rescuers effectively find resources before extreme weather.
C.Rid people of the possible extreme weather.
D.Help climate engineers create more models.
2. Which word can replace the underlined word “smitten” in paragraph 3?
A.Attracted.B.Inspected.
C.Attacked.D.Impressed.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The significance of the model.B.The potential risks of the model.
C.The downsides of the model.D.The working principle of the model.
4. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A.Prevent extreme weather occurring frequently
B.Provide electricity network operators extra resources
C.Update energy companies and other infrastructure operators
D.Predict and prepare for the impact of approaching storms

【推荐2】Urban biking requires entirely different bikes than suburban biking does and therefore a Bike Design Project started where five design studios across five cities had to come up with a perfect urban bike. The winning bike will be produced for a limited run of 100 bikes and will be in stores next year. Industry, a Portland-based studio came up with     a very interesting bike: one that uses bluetooth and handlebars that tell you when to stop or turn.

Industry worked together with Ti Cycles to create a bike with a 3D printed frame. The bike is called Solid and can connect to a smartphone app: My Bike. This app alarms a user when a light needs replacement and if something gets wrong with one’s brakes. There is also software called Discover My City, which has a series of routes through Portland’s most trendy neighborhoods, with suggestions about where to eat and shop.

However, the idea with cycling is that you need to focus on the road and not on your smartphone. This bike therefore uses feedback(反馈) on handlebars. Those handlebars tell a user when to turn, as they will buzz when a turn appears. As you’re getting closer, they will buzz more frequently. And then there’s the possibility to control your light via built-in sensors and change the chain by pressing an electronic button. Yes, a bike for superman.

Although the bicycle looks highly interesting and can be seen as a piece of art for the designing world, we don’t know if we would like our bike to have an automatic buzz when we’re approaching a turn. On the other side: it could add some extra safety to traffic in general. Whether you like the bike or not, you have to admit the Portland-based studio brings the concept of urban biking to a whole new level.

1. What can we know about the Bike Design Project?
A.It only produced one hundred bikes.B.It was to inspire people to cycle.
C.Its aim was to invent a kind of city bike.D.It was a worldwide project.
2. How can the user change the chain?
A.By using the handlebar.B.By looking at the feedback.
C.By controlling the light.D.By pressing an electronic button.
3. What is the advantage of the new bike?
A.It is much safer.B.It is lighter.
C.It moves faster.D.It is low-cost.
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A.Urban Biking Is Taking over the Road
B.This 3D Printed Bike Tells You Directions
C.The Smart Bike Will Change the Traffic
D.This 3D Printed Bike Is Changing Our Life

【推荐3】Have you ever wondered how astronauts clean their clothes in space? You may find the answer surprising—they do not.

They wear their clothes until they cannot take the dirt and smell anymore. Then, they throw them away.

NASA wants to change that—if not at the International Space Station (ISS), then the moon and Mars. This would mean the end to throwing away lots of dirty clothes every year. Up to now, they simply had to put them with other waste in old supply ships to burn up in the atmosphere. NASA is working with the U. S. company, Procter & Gamble (P&G), to learn how best to clean astronauts’ clothes in space. They could use the clothes for months or even years, just like on Earth.

NASA says rocket storage space is small and costly. So, why waste it on new clothes if they could keep their old clothes looking and smelling fresh? An astronaut needs 68 kilograms of clothes in space per year. The clothes would use a lot of storage space, especially on a three-year Mars mission.

There are also the problems of health and comfort.

Space station astronauts exercise two hours every day to fight the effects of weightlessness on their bodies. Leland Melvin, a former NASA astronaut, says their exercise clothing becomes so unpleasant that they use a new set every week, and that while NASA and the other space station partners have researched ways to lengthen wear time with special clothes, that is not a long-term solution.

In its first experiment, P&G will send up detergent(洗涤剂) made just for space in December. Scientists will then see how the compounds in the detergent react to six months of weightlessness. Next May, they will send stain-removal pens and cloths to the ISS for testing by astronauts. At the same time, P&G is developing a washer-dryer machine that could operate on the moon or even Mars. It would use small amounts of water and detergent. Such a machine could also be useful in dry places here on Earth.

1. What problem in space do NASA and P&G aim to solve?
A.Lack of detergents.B.Lack of comforts.
C.Lack of space.D.Lack of fund.
2. What can be inferred from what Leland Melvin says?
A.Exercise in space is physically demanding.
B.Lengthening wear time of clothes in space is practical.
C.The cooperation between NASA and P&G is workable.
D.New clothes are of benefit compared to used clothes.
3. What will P&G do in the next year?
A.Send detergent into space.
B.Send stain-removal pens and cloths into space.
C.Develop a washer-dryer machine using little water.
D.Operate a machine on the moon or even Mars.
4. In which section of a website may this text appear?
