You’re out on a hike, snacking on an apple,a banana, or a handful of nuts. When you’re finished, all that’s left is a core, a peel, perhaps a shell.“It’s natural,”you tell yourself, throwing it away carelessly. After all, food waste is biodegradable(可生物降解的).
Food waste doesn’t decompose as fast as you think
Animals are attracted to food waste
“Animals have a super advanced sense of smell compared to us,”says Jeff Marion, a biologist. All human food can attract animals. This can cause“attraction behavior”, which refers to human actions that cause animals to overcome their natural caution of people.
Human food can make animals sick
Animals becoming attracted to and subsequently used to human food can lead to far-reaching health issues in animals. Food waste by the roadside may cause animals deaths because wildlife attracted to that food can be hit by a vehicle.
To prevent any of these unwelcome effects, the best thing to do is to store and deal with food waste well. Don’t throw it about. Don’t burn it,as it is more difficult to burn. And if you pass other food waste on the trail or in the park, pick it up, even if it’s not yours.
A.Most people know food waste is biodegradable |
B.Play your part by keeping your food to yourself |
C.Make sure you won’t throw food waste randomly |
D.The food itself can also make animals sick and even kill them |
E.Animals can’t get to know the harm that human food contains |
F.This sort of attraction behavior can quickly become dangerous |
G.But food waste can cause a lot more damage than you may think |

From bachelor parties to family reunions, group trips are opportunities to explore the world with the people you love. They also have the potential to be planning messes, with scheduling, decision-making and sorting-out finances coming together.
Understand your group dynamic
Is it a group of friends, or is it a couple of families traveling together? Is it a multigenerational trip with a big age range? These factors all come into play with activity level, comfort zones and rooming.
Shared apps are vital
Once you’ve decided on the group, figure out when everyone is available. Doodle allows users to create a poll online of possible travel dates and then vote on preferred options. Tried and true Google Sheets is a nice way to organize options for destinations, housing and more in a spreadsheet.
Tracking expenses is doable via spreadsheet, but still requires a fair amount of work to properly divvy(分摊)up shares and figure out who owes what. Splitwise is a popular app for tracking, prorating and ultimately balancing expenses. It also integrates directly with the payment app Venmo, allowing you to make payments and receive money directly.
Getting group deals
Investigating group deals may be a bit time-consuming.
A.Budget carefully. |
B.Figure out finances. |
C.But they don’t have to be. |
D.But the research can save you money. |
E.WhatsApp is of great help to communicate. |
F.These apps bring much convenience to your group trip. |
G.Group dynamics can play a big role in determining where to stay. |

Sarah Smith and Kelvin Miller are from Lifetouch, a photography company that has been taking school pictures for 80 years. Here, they share their top tips for taking a smile-worthy photo.
• You, your eyes, and your smile are the star of the show, not your clothes. So don't wear anything that's really busy-like a loud pattern or too bright shade — that will steal attention away from your face.
• Don't over-practice your smile. The longer a smile is on your face, the less authentic it is. Try thinking about something that makes you laugh —maybe a joke or something silly a friend said —to make your smile look sincere.
• Try not to get your hair cut less than a fortnight before a picture day. That way it will have grown out to look more natural.
• If you are feeling nervous or tense, try yawning. This will relax all the muscles in your body, helping you to feel and look a bit more natural.

TV news reporters seem to project confidence and authority when they speak. As is thecase with many skills, practice makes perfect when it comes to reporting.
Watch the news to listen to how reporters sound.
Close your eves to focus on the reporter’s voice. Using their tone, the reporter tells youwhat is important, what is sad, what is exciting, and what you don’t want to miss.
Record yourseIf reading a report to spot your weaknesses.
Break out the video camera or smart phone and either record video or audio of yourself. Play it back and listen closely. Watch the news and compare your voice to the reporter’s.

Be prepared to go off-script from time to time.
This is called ad-libbing(即兴演说), and you might see examples of it between twostories or at the end of a story on the news.

How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands(腺) and the chemistry of her blood. Any chemical change in the mother's blood will affect the child for better or worse. But we cannot see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved(溶解) in blood and produce a similar liking or genius in the child.
In our discussion of instincts(本能) we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit(继承) must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be, however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study.
As for musical ability, it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear, a special structure of the hands or the vocal(发声的) organs connections between nerves and muscles. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors, in other circumstance, might be organized about some other center of interest.
The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it, but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other fields may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.A mother can't help her child become a talented poet just by studying poems during pregnancy. |
B.A pregnant mother needn't have prebirth training because of no nervous connection with her child. |
C.Mothers' prebirth training is totally unlikely to influence the character of unborn children. |
D.An emotional shock to the mother has little effect on her unborn child for their unconnected vessels. |
A.sensitive ears | B.capable fingers | C.a knowledge of maths | D.intelligence |
A.Inherited Talents | B.Role of the Environment | C.An Unborn Child | D.Role of Inheritance |

The Dead Sea, for example, known for being one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world is in danger of disappearing. Tourists are in the rush to the lake to float(漂浮)in its waters and put its mineral-rich mud on their skin. However, the water level has been dropping more than three feet per year in recent years. In fact, if nothing is done by 2050, it will be too late.
Madagascar’s rainforests could also be gone in about 30 years. They once covered 120,000 square miles, but due to logging(伐木)and forest fires, only 20,000 square miles remain today. This is sad for many animals that call Madagascar home. About 80 percent of the species(物种) that live there can’t be found anywhere else in the world, and there are even many more yet to be discovered.
There are also many man-made places of interest with long history around the world that are at risk of disappearing. One of these is Machu Picchu. A trip to these Inca ruins is on many people’s plan lists. However, Machu Picchu has been in danger, too. If steps are not taken to protect the ancient site, it could be gone in the near future.
Another place in danger is the Great Wall of China. Around one-third of the wall, built over centuries and completed in the Ming dynasty, is already gone. Wind and rain have weathered it and plants that grow in the wall have weakened it further. Also, poor villagers have stolen its bricks in order to sell them or build homes with them.
It’s hard to believe that so many amazing places could soon be gone for good. If you have your heart set on visiting any of these places, pack your bags and get to them before time runs out!

Children generally carry about 22 percent of their body weight in backpacks—for a teenager, that can reach more than 30 pounds of books, food, calculators, and other necessities of modern life. When that amount of pressure is placed on one or two narrow shoulder straps (带子), the weight can easily reduce blood flow to kids’ skin and muscles (肌肉).
Even at 10 percent of body weight, the pressures were still high, and that hasn’t been measured before,’’ said Brandon Macias. According to the study, the pressures were measured when the packs were loaded with 10 percent of the students’ body weight, then 20 percent, and finally 30 percent. An unusual finding came to light—even when both straps were used, pressure on the students’ shoulders was uneven (不平均的). It seems like the right shoulder becomes loaded more, which over a period of years may cause back pain.
The research team came up with the following advice based on its study. The backpack should be positioned (放置) high on the back, reducing the stress on the shoulders and back. And backpack straps should be positioned over both shoulders, lowering the amount of weight carried by one shoulder. Wider straps also reduce the pressure on the shoulders. And finally, the weight in backpacks should be reduced.
1. The study mentioned above was carried out for the purpose of ________.A.helping kids grow taller |
B.improving students’ grades |
C.reducing kids’ chances of having back pain |
D.helping students with pressure in their studies |
A.The bag with one shoulder strap is more suitable for students. |
B.The weight of the backpack should be 22% of their body weight. |
C.The two straps of a bag don’t share the same weight from a bag. |
D.Students usually carry a bag about 10 percent of their body weight |
A.was changed | B.was tested |
C.was impossible | D.was known |
A.using wider straps |
B.reducing the weight of the school bags |
C.positioning the school bags high on the back |
D.using more than one bag for kids, school things |
