Brody Ridder attends The Academy of Charter Schools in Westminster, Colorado. When he got his yearbook(学校年刊),he went up to people and asked them to sign his yearbook but most of them refused. He collected only two or three names from classmates and two notes from his teachers. So, Brody wrote a yearbook note to himself, “Hope you make some more friends. ”
Reading that note broke his mother’s heart. She took a photo of the note and posted it to a Facebook group for parents at the school. The post made its way to three high schoolers: Simone Lightfoot, Logan South and Joanna Cooper. They spent hours discussing the problem and finding ways to help. “It’s so fun to have everyone sign the yearbook, but for this kid few people have signed their names in his yearbook. It’s just heartbreaking,” Lightfoot said. They all started planning that the next day they were going to sign this kid’s yearbook.
The three rounded up as many students as possible to sign Brody’s yearbook even though none of them had ever met the three high schoolers. According to the teens, people were lining up to fill the blanks in Brody’s book. Many of the more than 100 signatures included paragraphs with words of encouragement, advice and even phone numbers. And then right after that, everyone in the class started signing Brody’s yearbook.
The teens said they hope the small friendly act can encourage other kids to be kind. “It makes me feel better now. I don’t know how to explain it. It makes me feel better from the bottom of my heart,“ Brody said. ”It makes me feel like there’s hope for the school, there’s hope for humanity and there’re a lot of good kids in this world,“ his mother said.

Yet, look closer, and you might notice a familiar scene: many of these students are not paying attention. Instead, they are dozing off (打盹) or even completely asleep.
Today, the majority of high school students are not getting enough sleep. This lack (缺乏) of sleep is a serious problem, especially as students are doing more than ever with their time. They come to school early, spend hours listening to teachers and taking tests, and come home to be faced with even more work. And the homework load these days is not light; teachers give hours worth of homework each night.
Most kids need at least nine hours of sleep per night in order to function properly. Yet the period of this nine hours shifts as a child gets older. After puberty (青春期), the body’s internal clock changes so that it is difficult for teens to fall asleep before 11 p.m. So even if a student falls asleep at eleven, they would need to sleep until at least 8 a.m. to get a full night’s sleep. Considering the time at which most high schools in this country begin, those nine hours are clearly being shortened. Few high schools start after 8 a.m.
However, there are schools that have paid attention to this research and delayed the start of their school day. In schools where the start time is after 8:30 in the morning, the teachers believe that there has been a real change in their students. They note that the students miss class less, pay more attention in class, perform better in class, and report lower levels of depression (沮丧). The researchers of these studies say that the results are quite important and that more schools should consider delaying their start time of their school day.

For centuries, educators and researchers have argued that garden-based learning improves children’s intelligence and boosts their personal health. In recent years, concerns related to childhood obesity(肥胖) and young people’s disconnection from nature have led to a more heated discussion of the topic. Tens of thousands of American schools have some form of school garden. Many are located on school grounds and others are run by external community partners. Most are connected to the school’s curriculum. For instance, seeds are used in science class to explain plant biology, fruits are used in social studies to teach world geography and the harvest is used in math to explore weights and measures. Some even use the food from the garden to cook the school lunch.
Given the enthusiasm that surrounds garden-based learning today, it’s worth looking into their overall impacts: Do school gardens actually improve the education and health of young people? Yes, definitely!
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that garden-based learning does generate educational, nutritional, ecological and social benefits. For instance, several published studies have shown that garden-based learning can increase students’ science knowledge and healthy food behaviors. Other research has shown that garden-based learning can help students better identify different types of vegetables as well as lead to more favorable opinions on eating vegetables, which helps kids make healthier eating choices. Many supporters go even further, suggesting that garden-based learning can inspire a variety of healthy changes for the whole family. For some low-income families, the fresh vegetables from the school garden can provide the necessary vitamins and fibre, helping lose weight. Others, like Edible Schoolyard founder Alice Waters, hold the view that the experience in the garden can have a great and positive impact on a child’s worldview.
As part of a long-term movement to improve community health, school gardens can provide a platform for experiential education, create valuable green space and develop a sense of responsibility in the minds and bodies of young Americans.

The study doesn’t prove that classrooms that face more challenges directly cause mental health problems in kids. However, “being in a classroom with a lack of resources might disadvantageously affect children’s mental health because children are frustrated or disheartened by their surroundings,” said study lead author Melissa A. Milkie, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland.
“Teachers may also be more discouraged when they can’t teach properly due to the fact that they are missing key parts,” she explained.
Milkie said the study shows that schools and teachers play important roles in children’s mental health. “I think parents care a lot about their children’s mental health—their emotional and behavioral well-being—but we as a society don’t focus on that as much as we talk about and think about academic outcomes,” Milkie said.
The study is based on interviews with the parents and teachers of about 10,700 first-graders in the United States. The researchers found that students in classrooms with fewer resources, in terms of inadequate teaching materials and teachers who didn’t feel supported by colleagues, were more likely to experience problems in several mental health areas.
For teachers, to get the support and encouragement that they need from colleagues, including the principal (校长), is likely important for whether the teachers are able to create a classroom climate that helps children grow healthily. If teachers are feeling stressed out because they aren’t getting what they need from their colleagues, that stress may carry over to the kids.
Although the current study only looked at students in first grade, Milkie thinks the findings would probably be very similar in higher grades. “I would be surprised if there were different findings for older children,” she said.

One of my favourite shows is that Mr. Bean has a meal in a fancy restaurant. After being seated at his table, Mr. Bean takes out a card, writes a few words on it, seals (密封) it in an envelope and places it on the table. After a moment, he looks back at the envelope but this time he looks surprised, as if he did not know it was there. He opens it to find a birthday card and delightedly puts it on the table for everyone to see.
When he looks at the menu, an astonished look swiftly appears on his face. He takes all the money out of his wallet, counts it and puts it in a saucer(茶托). He then looks from the menu to the money with concern until he finds one thing that makes him smile. Then he orders a dish called “steak tartare”. When the dish arrives, he is shocked to discover that “steak tartare” is actually raw hamburger. He makes an attempt to eat it, but it is clear from the look on his face that he finds the taste truly disgusting. He cannot hide his feelings, except when the waiter asks if everything is all right. When this happens, he smiles and nods, indicating that everything is fine. When the waiter is not looking, however, he busies himself hiding the raw meat anywhere he can reach — the sugar bowl, the tiny flower vase, inside a bun (小圆面包) and under a plate. He becomes so desperate in the end that he even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near him and throws some down the trousers of the restaurant’s violinist!
I like to watch Mr. Bean on TV, but I wouldn’t like to meet someone like him in real life and I certainly wouldn’t like to have dinner with him!

I sat down at an empty table for four very near the piano, and began to be warmed by her music and a bit by the wine! She played so effortlessly and with such beauty in every note. Her music immediately brought a huge smile to my face!
Soon, on a break, I thanked her and she told me that after a long day traveling, and now also facing long weather delays, she "just needed to
As I sat alone drinking my wine, absorbed in this young woman's celebration of her musical passion, two women approached my table and asked if they could join me. I invited them to sit and we immediately began sharing our love of music and celebrating the happiness the piano music was bringing us at that moment.
The two women and I began to talk about our travels, life journeys, and passions. Hearing that unbelievable piano music, and then meeting such interesting women, who generously shared with me their wisdom, perspectives, and feelings of love for each other, was truly joyous. Faced with an 11-hour travel day — to get what normally takes 45 minutes — could have been physically and emotionally exhausting. Rather, by accident of walking by a wine bar at the right moment, and having a couple of seats open at my table, my life was filled with joy.
I will cherish those moments for some time to come. This experience highlights (突出) the critical need in our lives to stop and listen to the music, to invite others to sit at your life table, to open yourself up to a stranger or two, sharing some of your deepest perspectives and experiences. Be open to noticing, absorbing, and also contributing to the joy around you!

【推荐3】When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. After choosing his presents, he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say "thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
