How to calm your teen

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can you help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s study.     1     What he looks for is your presence — to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with him quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but don’t let him focus on those fears.

Help him get organized.     2     Together, you and your teen can work out a timetable in which he can study for what he knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy.

Give him a nutritious diet. It’s important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam time to focus and do his best.     3     If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

4     Persuade your teen to get some sleep or do something active when he needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise is important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance his time so that he will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude.     5     Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for his efforts. Most importantly, reassure (使安心) your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

A.Encourage your teen to relax.
B.The best thing is simply to listen.
C.They will only make the situation worse.
D.Parents’ attitude will influence their teen’s emotions.
E.Exam stress can make some teens have no desire for food.
F.Your teen may also make negative comments about himself.
G.Help your teen think about what he has to study and plan accordingly.

In 2009, the number of hungry people in the world reached one billion for the first time. It is difficult not to be shocked by the fact that more than one in seven people on the planet do not have enough to eat. By the end of this year, more than 35 million people will have died as a result of______Hunger kills more people per year than AIDS and malaria(疟疾 ) combined.

The UN calculates that almost two-thirds of the world's hungry people are in Asia. More than a quarter are in sub-Saharan Africa. Almost all of the rest are in Latin America, North Africa and the Caribbean. In the richest regions of the world there are only a small number of people who don't have enough to eat. There are many reasons for world hunger.Theyinclude wars, droughts, floods and the overuse of farming land. All of them affect food production. But the most important reason is, quite simple, poverty—which has increased recently due to the economic effects of the financial crisis of 2008.

Although many people point out that there would be less hunger if the global population were smaller, few people would argue that there is not enough food to go around. The basic problem seems to be not a lack of food, but its distribution. In the last 50 years, global food production has risen even more quickly than the global population and there are of course many areas of the world where people generally have more than enough food. Overweight is a far bigger problem than hunger there.

【推荐2】Critical thinking is making an effort to improve the way you think.     1     We use this process to solve problems, make arguments and evaluate claims. It’s important in just about every area of life.

Most of our thinking is not critical thinking. We don’t need to make many judgments to travel to work or cook dinner.     2     Critical thinking can save us from blindly making poor choices. So how can you improve your critical thinking skills? You need to practise. There are many ways of doing that. Here are a few:

3     Look at articles or books written by people on all sides of the issue. For each source, evaluate the argument: What claim is it making? What reasons does it give? Are the reasons logical?

·When you see or hear a claim, ask questions about it. Who is making the claim and why? What is the claimant’s background and how does this motivate their opinion?

·Evaluate your own thinking. Where do you tend to not think critically? Why don’t you? How can you improve?

·Question things you assume. What claims do you accept without knowing the reasons for them?     4     Try to find out what others believe about that claim and why.

As you grow in critical thinking, you’ll become a wiser and more thoughtful person.    5

A.Stick to your claim.
B.Read about a topic people disagree on.
C.When you think of one, do some research.
D.It’s analyzing facts separately so you can make decisions.
E.And it may help you to succeed at work or school as well.
F.We’ll only use it if we make a conscious effort to ask questions about what we see.
G.But when a problem comes our way, we need to think critically to decide how to solve it.

【推荐3】How many books have you finished since high school? Between study, work, family, and social lives, trying to find time to read needs more effort than a relaxing hobby. How can you get reading books into your full schedule?    1

Borrow more books than you can read. Libraries have very large “limits” on books you can take out.     2     Return anything you don’t like. Some of the most efficient readers return five out of six books unread. This is not something to be ashamed of.

3     If you have a whole morning to read, you might hope for more kinds. People who read a lot have something going to suit all tastes.

Try the 50-page rule. If you feel you have to finish all the books you start, you may be stuck in something boring and not read again for weeks.     4     You’ll find something else you love more soon.

Don’t care about any thoughts about what you “should” be reading. It is OK if you are not so interested in the world’s great literature. Read what you want.     5     If you’re only reading because you “should” read, then over time, reading will drop from the top of your list down to laundry level or going to the dentist.

A.Read more than one book at a time.
B.You may have trouble deciding what to read first.
C.Here’s how to make more time for your favorite books.
D.So go crazy and borrow anything that looks interesting.
E.Quit after a few dozen pages if you’re not feeling into it.
F.Reading is one of the most pleasurable activities out there.
G.People don’t do well with the feelings of suffering long term.
