However, we should step back and think about different personalities and their unique advantages,” said Pérez-Edgar, professor of psychology (心理学) at The Pennsylvania State University. “Everyone can feel shy at times. And those who are especially shy often have happy social lives—they just aren’t likely to be the liveliest person in a crowded room.”
But there are things to watch out for. “If your children are avoiding situations that are important or could be enjoyable for them because they’re feeling nervous, it might be time to take action,” said Chiappini, a child expert. “That could mean not speaking in class, trouble making friends, or not joining in activities they like,” she said.
Chiappini recommended first saying something like: “You seem a little nervous or unsure about who everyone is/what to say. We haven’t met them before and that can feel a little uncomfortable.” From there, you can encourage them to join someone or say something when they are ready—with the promise that you will be there to support them, she added.
The more we avoid situations where kids may feel shy, the more anxiety (担心) we will have about them in the future. But that doesn’t mean to push your child into the deep end.
“We may have to deal with the situation step by step. For example, you may have to encourage your child just to make eye contact during an outing before expecting them to ask someone a question,” Chiappini said.

Give your brain a workout. Memory, like muscular strength, requires you to“use it or lose it”. The more you work out your brain, the better you' ll be able to process and remember information.
Don't skip the physical exercise. While mental exercise is important to brain health, that doesn't mean you never need to break a sweat. Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp. It increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk of disorders that lead to memory loss.
Get enough sleep. There is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get now and the amount you need to function at your best.
Keep stress in check. Stress is one of the brain's worst enemies. Over time, stress destroys brain cells. Studies have also linked stress to memory loss.
Have a laugh.
A.Play games with memory. |
B.Keep a brain-enhancing diet. |
C.Laughter is the best medicine. |

The 2016 movie describes a real story of some female African-American mathematicians who joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)and led a mission to put the first man on the moon in the 1950s when racial discrimination (种族歧视) was widespread.
“NASA is deeply saddened by the loss of a leader from our pioneering days,” said NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine on the webpage of NASA. “Ms. Johnson helped our nation push the boundaries of space and she also played an important role in opening doors for women and people of color to explore space. At NASA we will never forget her courage and leadership and the achievements we could not have reached without her.”
Johnson was born in West Virginia last century. She graduated from West Virginia State University with a major in mathematics and became a teacher at a public school. She was also the first African-American woman to attend graduate school in mathematics at West Virginia University until she left school to focus on raising children.
Her life changed in 1952 after a long career break. A relative told her about open positions at the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics's Langley laboratory, and she began to work for the aerospace industry at Langley the next year. NASA depended on humans for complicated aerospace calculation as there was no high-functioning electronic computer. Female mathematicians usually took the job as their salary was lower. Johnson was one of those African-American human computers.
Johnson was initially in charge of aerospace analysis and then a space development mission when NASA was launched in 1958. Then she worked for the 1961 suborbital (亚轨道的) flight of astronaut Alan Shepard. Johnson continued to participate in missions after she retired in 1986. Her hidden achievements were finally publicized when Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and her dramatic life was made into a movie.

At one time, he held the record for flying faster than any other person, the first pilot to cross the United States in less than 24 hours and the first pilot to fly “blind,” that is, using only instruments to guide his airplane. And when his country entered World War II, he led one of the first successful attacks against the enemy.
His name was James Harold Doolittle, who was born on December 14th, 1896, in the western state of California. His family soon moved to Nome, Alaska. James was a small boy and never grew to be very big. Yet larger boys made a mistake if they thought being small also meant being weak. James would fight if someone tried to hurt him. And he almost never lost.
As a young man James became a boxing champion and held the American West Coast championship for his weight. He continued to box when he entered the University of California to study mineral engineering. When the US entered World War I, young James joined the army and was trained as a pilot. After the war, he stayed in the army, thinking this would give him a chance to combine his flying skills with his interest in engineering.
For most of the years of the world wars, James was involved in the growth of the airplane industry. He helped test new airplanes, flew longer and longer distances and entered the world-famous air races of the time. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom on James. The award honored his work in aviation (飞机制造业) and his service to his country.

Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her father collected fossils (化石)in their village on the south coast of Great Britain. Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old, Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons (骨架)of several animals that no longer existed on earth. She didn’t become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891, a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with another scientist. Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for Chemistry. Parents, teachers and other high-achieving peers will have us believe that we must be perfect if we wish to remain competitive. However, what job or school requires you to develop a cure for some form of cancer by the age of 18? Although these grades would be admirable achievements, are they worth losing sleep over? We feel like we need the perfect grades to get into the perfect college that will provide us with the perfect education necessary to obtain the perfect job. Making use of our thirst for perfection, the whole college and career industries have emerged claiming to help us reach our goals.
Truth is, you only need to be good enough to get into the conversation. It is what you do afterwards that sets you apart. Focus more on your passions. Don’t worry about anything secondary to your passions. You don’t become an expert at anything if you spent your time trying to succeed in everything you do. You only become an expert when you devote your time to that one project that truly brings you joy.
As members of this society, we have a responsibility to be excellent in what we do, not perfect. Although perfection can be a goal, it should not be the only goal. We only have 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week. Thus, we need to plan what we want to do and cut out the activities we cannot do.
With everything, though, make sure you’re doing enough. Pursuing your passions is not enough of a reason to completely give up on everything else. Try as hard as you can and let your future worry about itself. Worry about your task at hand and you will be successful in achieving your dreams. Most of all, remember that you’re going to be okay.

As a high school basketball coach my “mission” was to teach and inspire kids around the world to “Achieve Straight A’s in the School of Life!” I recently turned age fifty and the book is now published in English as well as Spanish; plus, the foundation is launched. The organization is called the School of Life Foundation and the book that we give to kids is called Learn to “School” Your Toughest Opponent. Over the past two years we have placed this curriculum in the lives of close to 20,000 youth across sixteen states and eleven countries. The School of Life Foundation continues to grow each week.
The “Straight A’s in Life” system contained in the workbook has ten steps as follows:
·Appreciate — Have more gratitude in your life
·Assist — Serve others every day
·Attitude — Choose yours each morning
·Aim — Learn to focus by setting goals
·Associate — Make good people a part of your life
·Align — Get organized
·Action — Make things happen or watch and wonder
·Avoid — Stay away from things that will harm you
·Adapt — Turn every challenge into an opportunity
·Always — Remember to pray and ponder each day
My heart and soul is touched every day as I learn of a new story of a young person's life improving by using this journal workbook while “Living the A's” in life!
I am now “Living My Dream” of making a difference in the world. I chose to not give up over the past sixteen years when obstacles and discouragement got in the way. You have to perform with passion!
Your mission in life may be large or small, but is vital to all of us no matter what it may be. What are you doing today to find it? Are you living your dream? I am simply the guy next door encouraging you to get started today!

Though it isn’t a conventional medical addiction, for many people, success has addictive properties. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine (神经递质多巴胺) , which is shown in all addictive behaviors. Therefore, success is also similar to alcohol addiction in its effects on human.
“Unhappy is he who depends on success to be happy,” wrote Arex DiasRibeiro, a former Formula l race-car driver. “For such a person, the end of a successful career is the end of the line. His destiny (命运) is to die of bitterness or to search for more success in other careers and to go on living from success to success until he falls dead. In this case, there will not be life after success.”
There is plenty you can do to retrain yourself to pursue happiness instead of success. The first step is an admission that successful as you are, were, or hope to be in your life and work, you are not going to find true happiness in your professional life. You’ll find it in things that are deeply ordinary: enjoying a walk or a conversation with a loved one. The second step is to make up for any relationships you’ve compromised (妥协) in the name of success. The last step is to find the right measurement of success. If you measure yourself only by the rewards of money and power, you’ll spend your life running on these and comparing yourself to others. I suggest the better measurements be faith, family, and friendship.
Success in and of itself is not a bad thing. It can bring fun and sweetness to life. But it becomes tyrannical (专横的) when it is a replacement for the relationships and love that should be at the center of our lives.
