“Hurry, Marcus!” Millie called to her brother. Marcus caught up just as the school bus arrived. The doors opened and they got their first look at the new bus driver, Mr. Cross. There was no smile on his face. He just nodded at them as they climbed the steps. Millie wondered if he ever smiled. “I miss our old driver,” she whispered.
The bus traveled two more blocks, then stopped in front of a house with no one in sight. “Hey, we don’t usually stop here,” whispered Millie. Mr. Cross opened the bus doors.
Millie waited to see who would get on, but nobody did. Still, Mr. Cross nodded his head, the way he had when she and Marcus boarded the bus. Then he closed the doors.
“Did you see that?” Millie said. “He just opened the doors and nodded at someone, but nobody got on!” Marcus agreed. “That was strange.” The bus continued on the route, and the usual kids got on. Mr. Cross nodded at each one.
During school that day, Millie kept thinking back to what had happened that morning. It didn't make sense. At the end of the day, when she and Marcus got on the bus to go home, Marcus said, “I think I figured it out. He probably stopped to pick up a ghost kid!”
“A ghost kid?” Millie gulped (倒吸气).
“Maybe Mr. Cross can see ghosts,” Marcus said.
“No,” said Millie. “That’s silly.” But as they rode home, Millie thought about it. What else could it be? Why else would he open the doors?
The next two days, the same thing happened. The bus stopped and the doors opened. Smileless, Mr. Cross nodded, and the doors closed. Millie began to panic. This time she decided Marcus was right. “Who is this ghost kid? What if he’s sitting next to us?” They gathered courage to find out the truth.
On Friday morning, the bus stopped at that house again. Their hearts raced.

材料1:各国对迟到时间容忍度的情况调查(单位:分钟)
Tolerance toward one’s lateness
材料2:
There are few habits as annoying as someone making us wait. However, some punctually- challenged people have no intention of offending anyone. They still want to keep friends, family and bosses happy. They are often painfully aware and ashamed of the damage their lateness could do to their relationships, reputations, careers and finances.
Johnson, a doctor in New York, says his reputation for being unpunctual can sometimes be caused by a misunderstanding of opinion. “A friend will ask me to come over, and he’ll say ‘come anytime from seven.’ But if I do turn up at eight or later, he will be annoyed.”
Joanna, a teacher in London, for whom the most distressing (令人苦恼的) thing is writing school reports, never makes the deadline for herself. “I always spend weeks carefully considering everything about the reports,” she says, “just for fear that any error arises.”
【写作内容】

The benefits of having a higher education are manifold (多样的) and range from financial to cultural and from common benefits to some unexpected surprises, below you will find a number of reasons which will help to serve as justification for a higher education.
For many high school students, it is hard to imagine what the long-term benefits of a college education might be. College is demanding; the work seems challenging, and meeting all new people seems overwhelming. However, what most young people do not realize is that there is a high likelihood at college that you will find new friends with similar interests and values. You may find yourself developing new interests by getting along with those who have completely different life experiences. An opportunity to get to know your professors can also be counted one of the benefits of having a college education. These intellectuals can be counted on to welcome questions and discussion from students. Therefore, one of the key benefits of a college education is the social bonds created and developed during this unique time in a person’s life.
Besides, the fact that you’ll be building a career for the rest of your life is reason enough to make time for a college education. Indeed, a clear benefit of a college education is that not only will it give you time to better know your likes and dislikes before entering the labor force, it will also enhance the likelihood of a more successful career for you. Many young people are uncertain about a career path at the start of college. This is a time of exploration, and taking the time to explore a variety of college majors is time well spent.
One more justification for higher education could be that it is the best way to enhance yourself in an all-round way. Getting a good education may be the most important price you can pay for your personal advancement, because perhaps more than anything else, what you do with that huge gray material between your ears will determine your future. You never know where your talent could reach. So higher education can provide you with the chance to realize your personal value.
Therefore, never undervalue the benefits of entering a higher education, which surely will bring you something beyond expectation.

Online tutoring in America
It’s a nightly dilemma (困境)in many American families: a student hits a wall doing homework, and parents are too tired, too busy or too puzzled to help.
Ordering up a tutor is becoming as easy for kids as grabbing a snack. Students can use a credit card to connect with a live tutor. Such non-stop, no-appointment-needed services can be especially helpful to students with tight budgets or little time or those in remote areas although the quality of on-demand scholastic support may be uneven, and the unstable source of tutors may not be the best for those who need continuous help. Besides, language barriers can also cause problems on sites which rely on tutors from abroad.
Prices are lower than what many skilled tutors charge in a student’s home. Parents and students say the quick homework fix can ease stress and make evenings at home more peaceful.
Whenever Peggy Bennett of Dallas tries to help her daughter, Chloe Friedman, with her eighth-grade physics and maths homework, “We’d always end up with quarrelling,” Ms Bennett says, with Chloe often objecting that the teacher did it differently.
Chloe says she doubted when her mum helped her sign up last month for an online tutoring service. But after she logged in one evening for maths help, a tutor responded within a minute.
Chloe says she was guided to figure out the answers, using text chat and an interactive “whiteboard” that displayed their writing and calculations on a screen. And that took only about ten minutes. Ms Bennett says, “That was all that she needed.”
Most sites employ moonlighting or retired teachers, college professors or professionals with tutoring experience; most offer scheduled tutoring in addition to on-demand sessions. The most common users are middle-and high-schoolers, and college students who take basic courses.

The term “helicopter(直升机) parents” is a description of parents who are hovering(盘旋) over their children in a state of extreme concern. They always show up to solve their children’s problems, protect them from real or imagined harm, resolve stressful situations, offer advice and get them out of trouble, even if they behave wrongly. Although out of love and concern, it can have harmful effects on their children’s emotional development and future independence.
Children learn through their mistakes. But if you intervene(干涉,介入) at first sign of struggle and finish your child’s homework, he’ll miss out on valuable learning opportunities.
You’re sending him the message that he needs to be perfect and failure is not an option; otherwise you wouldn’t always take over from him.
By constantly rescuing your child from stressful situations, you’re sending him a message that you don’t believe he’s able to take care of himself. Children develop self-esteem(自尊) by learning how to complete challenges on their own. If you are always intervening, he will miss this vital stage in his growth. As a result, your child may lack the confidence necessary to do well in school, pursuing hobbies and interests, and developing friendships.
If you’re always taking care of everything for your child, it’ll be more difficult for him to become independent. As an adult, he might find it hard to take care of himself, because he has never developed coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. He might suffer from irrational(不理智的) fears, anxiety and depression, which could lead him to drop out of college or frequently change jobs, according to Dr Michele Borba. Instead of developing healthy relationships, he might seek a partner who will take care of or control him, as his parents did.
You can help your child become more independent by allowing him to complete tasks and challenges on his own without your intervention. Even if he fails at first, don’t interfere(干涉,干预) — encourage him to start again. Show that you have faith in his abilities to succeed without your help. Allow him to learn natural consequences(后果). Even small things can help him become more independent— making his own bed, preparing his own lunch, shopping for his own clothes and doing homework without your help.

New look on the Museum
Museums have changed. They are no longer places for the privileged few or for bored vacationers to visit on rainy days.
At a science museum in Ontario, Canada you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, you can look at 17 century instruments while listening to their music. At the Modern Museum in Sweden, you can put on costumes provided by the Stockholm Opera. As these examples show, museums are reaching out to new audiences, particularly the young, the poor and the less educated members of the population. As a result, attendance is interesting.
Many museums have changed in appearance. Some old, gray museums have been rebuilt, and the newer ones are open and modern in their architecture. Inside, there is modern lighting, color, and sound. Instead of displaying everything they own, museum directors show fewer objects and leave open spaces where visitor can gather and sit down. They also bring together in one display a group of objects drawn drawn from various parts of the museum to represent the whole lifestyle of region or a historical period. In one room, for instance, you may find materials, clothing, tools, cooking pots, furniture, and art works of a particular place and time.
More and more museum directors are realizing that people learn best when they can somehow become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, for example, there are no guided tours. The visitor is encouraged to touch, listen, operate, and experiment so as to discover scientific principles for himself. The purpose is not only to provide fun but also to help people feel at home in the world of science. The theory is that people who do not understand science will probably fear it, and those who fear science will not use it to the best advantage.
