National Student Poets Program
The National Student Poets Program, the nation’s highest honor for young poets creating original work, is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Poetry Foundation, and the Academy of American Poets. Annually, five students are selected for one year of service, each representing a different geographic region of the country. The Program believes in the power of youth voices to create meaningful changes, and supports them in being heard.
HOW TO APPLY
The first step to becoming a National Student Poet is submitting poetry to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. High school students who receive a Gold National Medal in poetry can apply for the National Student Poets Program.
IN THE COMMUNITY
Each year, National Student Poets act as youth poetry ambassadors, bringing poetry to their communities through individual service projects, April Poetry Month readings, and a variety of other opportunities, such as national poetry conferences and festivals.
As part of their Year of Service, each National Student Poet creates a community service project, letting more people in their regions know about the Program and making them concerned with issues and themes that hold special significance for the Poet.

(A)
One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word “Poems” appeared in big, hot pink letters.
“Is it good?” I asked her.
“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward.
“‘Patty Poem,’” she read the title. Who is Patty? I wondered. The poem began:
She never puts her toys away,
The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:
And I’ll be sad.
A terrible sorrow washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.
“It’s you, honey,” My mother said sadly.
To my mother, the poem revealed a parent’s affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.
“What’s wrong?” my mother asked.
“Oh Mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”
She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay?”
“Okay,” I was still weeping. My panic has gone. But I could not help thinking about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.
I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

【推荐3】Whitman was one of the most original and inspiring American poets, well known for his art and his role as a poet. He devoted himself to poetry praising the native American’s experience. As America’s first epic poem, Leaves of Grass ran nine editions with more than 400 poems all written in free forms, that is, poetry without a fixed beat or regular rhyme scheme. The tide implies rebirth, renewal, or green life. As Whitman once said, “Leaves of Grass was the outcropping of my own emotional and other personal nature — an attempt, from first to last, to put a person, a human being freely, fully and truly on record.”
For Whitman, science, democracy (民主) and spirituality (灵性) were the three things that underlay the structure of modern poetry. Whitman tried to combine the world of science, the democracy and the spiritual feeling of life into his poetry. For Whitman, the poetic form should be free. Therefore, he threw aside the traditional form and had his own form. Both the form and content of his poems are revolutionary. With its frequent use of oral language and everyday events, his poem represented a turning point in the history of American poetry — poetry fashioned out of specially American experience in a clear American idiom. Whitman’s unique poetic creation has developed a very significant tradition in American poetry.
In his poems, he celebrated new America rather than regretted it. He was against slavery, idolized (崇拜) Lincoln, supported strikes, and combined the ideal of the common people and that of the ragged individual.
