It was a beautiful sunny day when Martin went out into the backyard. It would have been a perfect day to play. But Martin wasn’t out there to play.
Two months before, so interested had Martin been in playing the flute ( 长 笛 ) that he asked his mother to buy him the expensive flute and promised to practice at least thirty minutes every day. But it can be difficult to concentrate on a flute when your room is full of cool stuff like a TV, video games and the Internet. So Martin’s mother sent him to the backyard to practice, where there would be no distractions ( 分 心 的 事 物 ) .
Martin sat down on the grass and brought the flute to his lips. He began doing his fingering exercises with his eyes closed. You have to close your eyes when you want to concentrate on stuff. Anyway, he played for a good forty or fifty seconds before he heard a familiar sound: “Hey, Martin.”
He looked in the direction of the voice and saw the face of his friend, his next-door neighbor, Kris, who was smiling at him from the fence.
“I just got a new movie!” he said, “Want to come over and check it out?”
Well, that was exactly what Martin wanted to do. He loved movies but he shook his head and said sorry. Kris seemed disappointed that Martin had said no. But he also understood that Martin had to practice a lot when learning a musical instrument. So he left and watched the film by himself
Martin was alone with his flute. He closed his eyes and started his fingering exercises again. But he couldn’t concentrate. He wasn’t anything like his father, a biologist. Martin had been to his lab many times. He couldn’t understand why his father could concentrate on his researches for so long a time. When he was thinking, his father came over

Before the sun had even broke across the horizon, young Larkin Wyley was anxious to start his day. Larkin was confident that he was going to make a big paleontology (考古)discovery.
As his parents drove him to the digging site, it was hard for Larkin to contain his excitement. “Just think, in a couple of hours I may be holding something millions of years old!" , said Larkin. "Well, that would be something, Larkin. But remember, paleontology is hard work. The most important thing is to just have fun today," said his dad. "And if things don't turn out like you had hoped, that's okay. Just keep at it." said Larkin's mom.
Larkin appreciated his parents' advice, but quickly reminded them about the local farmer who had discovered a fossilized dinosaur egg many years before. "Where there's one, there's sure to be more!” said Larkin with great excitement. Then the Wyley family drove up a long country dirt-road, where Larkin's grandparents owned land. And it was there that Larkin knew he would find his T-Rex.
So after a nice breakfast with his family, Larkin set out on his exciting search for the discovery of a lifetime. The front-yard of his grandparents' farmhouse was where Larkin decided to break ground next. So he started to dig. And then he dug. And then he dug some more. And then, BINGO!!! Much to Larkin's amazement, he unearthed what clearly was the next best thing to a fossilized dinosaur egg --- dinosaur bones. The bones were caked in mud. Larkin gathered them up and ran towards the house as fast as he could.
After rushing inside and announcing his discovery to his family, it was brought to Larkin's attention that he had actually unearthed steak bones buried by his Grandparents' dog Millie. Larkin wasn't happy, but his family reminded him that paleontology was hard work, and to just keep at it.
Close to his grandparents' farmhouse was a long and winding creek. And it was there that Larkin decided to break ground next. So he started to dig. And then he dug. And then he dug.

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have? Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

One cold winter day, after her husband left for work, she decided to spare some time to go shopping. She drove to a store, with her son, a little baby, sitting beside her.
On parking her car, she took her little son and rushed into the store. When picking groceries, she found her son quite wanted to have a sleep. She decided to quicken her speed of shopping and then return to her car to put her son on the comfortable car seat so he could easily fall asleep.
So she quickly finished selecting groceries. Then she carried them and her baby and rushed towards her car. When she stepped forward to open the car door, she was shocked to find that her keys were gone. After minutes of checking around, she realized she had locked them inside the car with her bag.
She wasn’t sure what to do. So she carried her son and went back inside the store. She had to use their phone to call her husband for the spare key because her phone was in the bag she had left in the car. After many calls with no answer, she was getting very anxious. Her son was tired. But unable to fall asleep, he got very impatient and nervous. Jane herself was tired from last night’s sleepless night.
Now looking at her impatient baby, Jane felt sad. Suddenly, her baby burst out crying, and she felt tears coming down her face, too. Just then, an employee at the store tapped Jane on the shoulder and asked her to come with her, Jane was embarrassed, thinking she was going to be blamed by this employee. The employee took her, to her surprise, to the cafe inside the store. Then, she asked Jane kindly if she’d like a cup of coffee.

Matt is ten years old and always nervous about something. When the night sneaks up on him, he lies in bed with the blanket tightly up around his chin. The shadows on the edge of the ceiling make him slide deeper under the cover. And tonight is no exception. That’s why his mother left the light on in the hallway. To frighten away strange noises.
But that’s not all that’s wrong with Matt. He is also very unhappy. In the daytime he watches everyone pass by. He notices adults carry their briefcases on their way to work. He even worries about how hard they have to work. He sees ladies holding umbrellas in case the rain comes in the afternoon. He thinks a hurricane or a terrible rainstorm might come.
Matt always thinks the worst. He even lingers behind other children on their way to school. Some play friendly tricks on each other and tease and holler in loud voices. Not Matt. He has very few friends. In fact if he has to think very hard he can’t remember more than two. They live on the other side of Truro. So he’s pretty much alone.
That day was very special for Matt. He didn’t realize that his grandfather was watching him. He saw Matt go to school and waited for him to come out for lunch. He watched Matt eat by himself on one of the benches in the schoolyard.
It was right near one of Matt’s favorite squirrels. He watched as Matt motioned the squirrel to come across the yard to sit with him. A black blur raced toward him and then jumped up on the bench to take the peanut treat. Grandfather saw this and was glad.
Over the next few days, Grandfather was able to observe the kindness, which Matt had not only for animals but for people as well. When Sally fell off her bike and cut herself, Matt stayed with her until she was fixed up by her mother.
Most of the neighborhood children took part in a Saturday baseball game with their parents. Matt was watching a few children play ball at Victoria Park.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
