Ways to Enhance Your Business

Anytime an organization introduces a new product into the market, there is a standard rate of adoption that occurs among customers. The question that organizations face when introducing new products is how they can accelerate the adoption rate. There are several proven ways to do this:

Communication

One of the     1     that organizations face with new products is that customers don’t know about them or understand what benefits they might bring. That’s why     2     a new product with a marketing and awareness campaign is so critical. Whether it’s built around word of mouth or     3     marketing, the goal is to make customers aware of the product so that you can increase the possibility that they will be willing to try it.

Observable benefit

TV infomercials often     4     some product that’s put to some odd test, like knives that cut tissue paper and tomatoes equally well. The point of these commercials is to demonstrate “observable benefit”. There is real value in helping your customers see the     5     benefits of using your new product. It is powerful to make those benefits clearly observable. For instance, we have a client whose businesses help fundraisers raise more money. To help increase the adoption rate, they offer customers the opportunity to upload their donor base for free so that they can     6     the list and determine how much more money they could raise with his system. That, then, creates an observable win and a strong promise to get someone to     7     the product over the long run.

Offer a free trial

Giving someone a 30-day free trial is a very powerful way to get them to use your product quickly and then,     8     , to continue using that product after the trial ends. Remember that trials lead to sales, which lead to repeat sales. So when you’re ready to     9     a new product into the market, look for ways to use these strategies to increase the rate at which your new and existing customers     10     to it. That’s when the real wins happen and where the money is.

Get rid of mosquitoes, but how?

Almost everyone who spends time outdoors has experienced mosquitoes. These bloodsucking insects give itchy bites and can spread disease. But how can you avoid them and protect yourself?

Jessica Damiano is a gardening expert. In a recent story, Damiano said the best control is     1    . And she gave suggestions on how to     2     mosquito populations.

It may seem difficult to avoid mosquitoes, as most of the areas in the world are     3     populated with them. People who live near     4     of water, such as lakeside, may experience more mosquitoes. But there are several measures you can take to reduce their numbers.

Mosquitoes need less than a centimeter of water to lay eggs. A female can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. So, check your     5     to see if there is anywhere that collects water. Water can easily collect in small     6     —a child’s toy, a trash can lid, or a cooking pot.

Even if the amount of standing water seems small,     7     it. Make holes in the bottoms of containers that can hold     8     water. Other standing water such as in ponds and bird baths can be     9     with chemicals.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself. Put screens in your doors and windows or keep them closed. And cut down on time spent outdoors between the early evening and the early morning. Mosquitoes are most     10     during that time.

How to be a demanding reader

The rules for reading yourself to sleep are easier to follow than are the rules for staying awake while reading. Get into bed in a comfortable position, make sure the light is     1     enough to cause slight eyestrain, choose a book that is either terribly difficult or terribly boring-in any event, one that you do not really care whether you read or not-and you will be asleep in a few minutes. Those who are experts in relaxing with a book do not have to wait for     2    . A comfortable chair in the library will do any time.

Unfortunately, the rules for keeping awake do not consist in doing just the     3    . It is possible to keep awake while reading in a comfortable chair or even in bed, and people have been known to     4     their eyes by reading late in light too dim. What kept the famous     5    readers awake? One thing certainly—it made a difference to them, a great difference, whether or not they read the book they had in hand.

Whether you manage to keep awake or not depends in large part on your goal in reading. If your aim in reading is to profit from it—to     6     somehow in mind or spirit—you have to keep awake. That means reading as actively as possible. It means making an effort—an effort for which you expect to be     7    .

Good books, fiction or nonfiction, deserve such reading. To use a good book as a helper to fall asleep is pure waste. To fall asleep or, what is the same, to let your mind wander during the hours you planned to devote to reading for profit—that is,     8     for understanding—is clearly to defeat your own     9    .

But the sad fact is that many people who can distinguish between profit and pleasure—between understanding, on the one hand, and entertainment or the mere satisfaction of curiosity, on the other hand—nevertheless     10     to carry out their reading plans. They can’t make it even if they know which books give which. The reason is that they do not know how to be demanding readers, how to keep their mind on what they are doing by making it do the work without which no profit can be earned.

People tend to think that productivity involves doing several things at once, but according to Cal Newport, the secret to success is the opposite of multitasking. Newport is the author of Deep Work, a book that describes the benefits of focusing on one thing and doing it with     1    .

Newport defines deep work as “the ability to focus without     2     on a cognitively (认知地) demanding task.” It’s the opposite of shallow work, which is made up of simple tasks that are usually     3     while distracted.

According to Newport, deep work is a(n)     4     skill in today’s economy. It allows you to learn difficult things quickly and produce at a high level. Most people are distracted when they work, so you learn to work without distraction, that gives you     5    . Deep work enables you to produce to the best of your ability and acquire new skills quickly. Developing excellence in one’s craft can be a deeply     6     try. But deep work itself is also a skill, which means the more time you spend at it, the easier it gets. Moreover, if you only work at a shallow level, your ability to do deep work decreases.

So how do you conduct deep work into your work life or your studies? It’s essentially important to     7     deep work into your day. Otherwise, it’s easy to let your time fill up with shallow work. Newport recommends doing deep work as your first task of the day. That way you get it done before distractions build up. Shallow work does need to get done, but if you save it for later in the day, you can get your deep work done, too.

Scheduling deep work sessions for the same time every day can turn them into a habit. This makes it easier to spend time on them.

Because deep work is by definition cognitively demanding, you won’t be able to do it all day. Beginners can usually only focus on deep work for     8     an hour, and even experts have trouble going more than four hours. So set     9     goals for yourself. If you really focus, you’ll be surprised at how much you accomplish in a few hours.

By focusing on     10     sessions of deep work, you can get more done in less time and feel more satisfied.
